Sve dragocjenosti mediterana u njihovom punom sjaju obuhvatio je hvarski Stari Grad. Osnovan još 384. godine kao starogrčki grad Faros, nalazi se na zapadnom dijelu otoka Hvara, na dnu Starogrojske uvale. Posjetite li Stari Grad, uvjerit ćete se zašto su najeminentniji svjetski turistički časopisi u nekoliko navrata naš najsunčaniji otok uvrstili među najpoželjnije destinacije na svijetu. Čudesni podvodni svijet Hvara, osim očaravajuće flore i faune, skriva i ostatke potopljenih brodova, te je pravi raj za ronioce svih kategorija. Pobornici aktivnog turizma biti će oduševljeni i biciklističkim stazama, a turisti-planinari vrhom – vidikovcem Sv. Nikole na kojem je u 15. St. sagrađena i crkvica.
Nemojte otići sa Hvara a da niste probali ukusne Starogrojske Paprenjoke, izvrsne slastice od lavande i koju kapljicu najpoznatijeg hvarskog vina – plavca. Šarenilo ljekovitog bilja i vinove loze čini kolorit znamenitog Starogradskog polja. Posebnost ovog vrijednog lokaliteta leži u raspodjeli zemljišnih čestica, koje su se, zahvaljujući suhozidima koji označavaju njihove međe, održale do današnjeg dana te su „praktično nepromijenjene“ od antičkih vremena i samim time jedinstveno svjedočanstvo geometrijskog sustava podjele zemlje kakav se koristio još za starih Grka. Zahvaljujući ovoj osobitosti, polje je uz povijesnu jezgru grada, 2008. godine stavljeno pod zaštitu UNESCO-a, a i samo sadrži više od 100 arheoloških lokaliteta, kao što su rimske villae rusticae i grčke kule (Kupinovik, Maslinovik).
Uz ovaj jedinstven spoj prirode i povijesnih znamenitosti, svakako nemojte zaobići Tvrdalj – najpoznatiju građevinu Starog Grada, koju je čitavog svog života brižljivo podizao pjesnik, kršćanski mislilac i graditelj Petar Hektorović. Riječ je o građevini koja spaja obrambeni i ladanjski tip arhitekture (kaštel i dvorac) što joj daje poseban izgled utvrđene renesansne vile. Kao što je latinskim natpisima naznačeno, započet je kao ljetnikovac, a ostavljen potomstvu kao zaokruženi mirkokozmos posvećen Stvoritelju svega (OMNIVM CONDITORI). Iz natpisa također saznajemo da je pjesnik sagradio Tvrdalj za sebe i svoje prijatelje, ali i za putnike i siromašne (PRO ITINERANNTIBUS i PRO PAUPERIBUS), a čudesna je njegova znamenitost ribnjak s bočatom vodom u kojoj slobodno žive cipli, te mala kula nad njim, s kamenim gnijezdima za golubove i rupama za vrapce. Teško je izdvojiti samo nekoliko starogrojskih vrednota na koje smo ponosni, ali kada bi baš morali, bila bi to upravo ova dva dragulja hrvatske i svjetske kulturne baštine.

I f you visit the Stari Grad, you’ll realize why the world’s most eminent tourist magazines on several occasions ranked our sunniest island among the most desirable destinations in the world. Its crystal clear sea offers not only enjoyment in swimming, but also sights to show only to a select few. The marvelous submarine world of Hvar hides the remains of sunken ships is a true paradise for divers of all categories. Lovers of active tourism will be delighted with biking trails, and the mountaineers with the St. Nicholas peak with a 15th century church.
Do not leave Hvar without tasting delicious Paprenjok – famous Stari Grad cookies – brand, cakes made of lavender, and Plavac – Hvar’s most famous wine varietals. Founded in the year 384 as ancient Greek city of Pharos, Stari Grad is located on the west side of the island, at the bottom of the bay of Stari Grad. A patchwork of medicinal herbs and grape vines make the coloring the renowned Stari Grad Plain. The particularity of this valuable locality lies in the distribution of land parcels, which are, thanks to the stone walls that mark its boundaries “practically unaffected” since geometric division of the country as it was at the time of the ancient Greeks. Thanks to this peculiarity, the plain was, along with the historic core of the city, placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008. The plain itself contains more than 100 archaeological sites, such as the Roman villae rusticae and the Greek towers (Kupinovik, Maslinovik).
Tvrdalj is built in a construction that combines defensive and rural type of architecture (a castle and a palace), which gives it a distinctive look of a fortified Renaissance villa. As indicated by Latin inscriptions, it started out as a summer residence, and left to posterity as an allround microcosm dedicated to the Creator of all things (OMNIVM CONDITORI). The inscriptions also tell us that the poet built Tvrdalj for himself and his friends, but also for travelers and the poor (PRO ITINERANNTIBUS and PRO PAUPERIBUS). Its remarkable notability is a pond with brackish water in which freely live mullets, and a small tower above it, with stone nests for pigeons and holes for sparrows. It is difficult to single out just a few Stari Grad sights we are proud of, but if we had to, we would emphasize precisely these two jewels of both Croatian and world’s cultural treasure.
