Explore Central Dalmatia top places for diving! From the perspective of a lover of the sea’s depths

If you were to ask any experienced diver if they’d recommend
that you dive in the central Dalmatian part of the Adriatic sea, the answer
would be categorical and enthusiastic - yes!

The reasons are not difficult to discern - from the sea with
its exceptional clarity that provides great visibility, excellent diving
positions (which, in addition to rich underwater walls, often include a sunken
ship or two!), and the absence of deadly underwater species.

If you are in a diving dilemma, we have prepared three real gems that you cannot go wrong with for you - the islands of Šolta, Brač and Vis!

Underwater pyramids, ancient anchors and sunken fishing boats are what awaits you if you decide on Šolta! If you are most attracted to exploring a sunken fishing boat, then you’re in luck - this attraction at a depth of twenty metres is suitable for all diving categories, and you will find it on the northern side of the island of Šolta, near Stomorska at the Pelegrin position.

juzna-strana-solte-u-blizini-uvale-jorja_1

If you don’t want your underwater adventure to go unrecorded, choose the locations suitable for filming - a gallery along the cape of Livka bay with a vertical wall and a cave 35 metres deep, at the bottom of which lies an ancient anchor, or the position of Marie Grota.

For experienced and advanced divers (and videographers!) we would recommend two true underwater specialities - the Pyramid location in Travna bay will reveal fascinating underwater peaks which look uncannily like mysterious buildings, and the Sipuja location in Stracinska bay is an underwater wall full of holes, crevices, canyons and gorgonia, which is also home to numerous fish species!

uvala-senjska_1

Geological diversity and large amberjacks which swim with the divers - these are the attractions you will come across if you decide to dive on our biggest island, Brač! Brač is mystical and interesting, just like its diving sites, and one of the most interesting is Ptičji rat near the town of Povlja.

leomar-diving-center-1_1

It is located between the steep slopes of Biokovo and a place called Vrulja where there are underwater caves and channels from which rivers flow.

For everyone who wants to dive in an interesting company - there’s the amberjack fish! - You can do so in a cave in the "Lucice" harbour on the southern side of the island of Brač, and for more experienced divers, we recommend diving in the cabin part of the sunken ship "Meje".

Due to the depth at which the boat is located (37 metres),
technical diving with gas mixtures is recommended, and if you venture into this
endeavor, this position east of the little island of Mrduja with a
30-metre-long ship lying on the sand will surely delight you!

Image result for brač ronjenje

Our most mysterious island, Vis, a former military base, looks like a breathtaking location on a James Bond film, no less interesting is its underwater world!

Image result for vis ronjenje

There are indescribably exciting locations waiting for you with even a few sunken ships - from the merchant ship "Teti" in a location suitable for all diving categories (a depth from 14 to 35 metres), which is a common motive for underwater photographers, the Greek cargo ship "Vassilos T" (at a location for more advanced divers and for beginners), the "Brioni" steamboat which is now overgrown with numerous sponges and corals, up to the Ursus tugboat which was sunk by a British submarine in 1941, and even the wreckage of an American fighter jet from the Second World War!

Visit Omiš – a town of pirates!

They went any length even against the Pope, their fast boats were a thorn in Venetian's side, and not one ship could pass without paying them fee

Image may contain: 2 people, people sitting and outdoor

Not much is needed for happiness, a saying familiar to the owner of a house where even today stays a writing Thank you Lord for my presence on this world. Locals especially like it, tourists find it attractive, so the house got a name The House of a Happy Man.

Relaxed lifestyle, perfect climate and beautiful landscape shaped by the Cetina canyon, the sea and Dinara mountain make Omiš people truly fortunate. Their town is not just another attractive holiday destination on the Adriatic, but also a place of rich cultural heritage.

Pirates, Omiš

The Nemesis of
Split and Dubrovnik

Historians would probably
start from the beginning – two thousand years ago when Cetina mouth was being
inhabited. But, we'll skip all those centuries of long and turbulent past and
take you to 12th and 13th century, in time of Kačić princes who had the most
famous pirate fleet on the Adriatic. Striking everyone with fear, Omiš's
pirates charged free sailing to everyone who passed their town.

For almost two centuries they ruled this part of the Adriatic while attacking merchant ships of great maritime cities of Split, Dubrovnik, Kotor and Venice. They didn't even flinch before Pope's galleys sailing to Palestine. It was pope Honorius III who lost the First Crusade against Omiš people in 1221. 60 years later, in the Second Crusade, fought by Venetians on behalf of the Pope, Omiš pirates weren't so lucky. Not long after the lost battle Kačičs retrieved from the town, defeated and weakened, but not giving up piracy for a long time.

It resisted the battles, but not a thunderstroke

As a permanent reminder of famous history above the old town stands fortress Mirabela– former pirate lookout from which entire Brač channel is visible, ensuring that no ship passes unspotted. Thanks to Byzantine coin found in its foundations its construction is dated back to the 13th century.

Image result for mirabella omiš

Those foundations resisted numerous battles and wars, but not a thunderstorm 30 years ago, when a thunder stroke at the top of the fortress and demolished it completely. Today it is restored into its original shape and is a favourite tourist site. It is most easily reached by steps that start at Omiš's largest church – St. Michael's.

The biggest summer
manifestation in Dalmatia

Although they've given up piracy centuries ago, Omiš
people still keep their sea agility, which is confirmed every 18 August. On
this day more than ten thousand visitors from all over the world come to Omiš
to enjoy in history revived and reconstruction of Pirate Battle between Omiš
people and Venetians. Apart from Omiš's pirates many historical groups take
part in this manifestation: Dubrovnik Trombunjeri, Klis Uskoks, Knight's
society Kumpanija from Blato on Korčula, Župski Gospari, Pirates from Župa
Dubrovačka and Cultural Society St. Juraj, Poljica.

During summer heat Blue Lake turns into a lively refreshing destination, and when it dries up it becomes an attractive and unique football field. Red Lake is unapproachable due to steep cliffs that surround it. Nature has played here and created more lakes of peculiar looks and names: Two eyes, Prosutica lake, Krenica and Provalija, Galipovac, Lokvičićka lakes and  Knezovića lake.

Imotska sila (July 5 – 8) (silo/sijelo – village evening gathering due to some joint

You can also take a walk along Roman road, which used to lead from Salona to Aequum settlement (Čitluk near Sinj) and military camp Pons Tiluri (Gardun near Trilj). Explore our greatest island - Brač is mysterious and irresistible!

ATTRACTIVE IN PRESEASON AS WELL. However – and wherever – you decide to explore it – on two wheels, along the paths of its worthy cultural heritage, or even through its cuisine – Brač is equally mysterious and irresistible.

Let your visit be active, but tasty as well – cycling in idyllic ambience and going on excursions to cultural-historical treats can be spiced up with gourmet ones – homemade lamb that melts in your mouth, wine that gently tickles your nostrils and palates – and one of the most delicious cakes in the world!

A WAY TO BRAČ’S HEART. In recent years Brač has made an incredible progress as far as cyclotourism is concerned, and we can say that interest for an adventure on two wheels has spread from Sutivan, which has always been associated with sports thanks to Vanga Regule festival and Bike Friendly Sutivan project.

Brač is an island with the greatest number of arranged cycling roads – even 25! All you have to do is choose the one according to your taste. They were named after saint-patrons, winds and Mediterranean herbs. We especially like Heart of Brač - it will present you with untouched Brač as it used to be, but also with ten medieval and Renaissance churches!

Some roads are so intriguing that aren’t for those of weak nerves – for example, Macića and Vivera road was named after surreal creatures from local legends about Postira, and it will take you to the oldest place on Brač – Škrip and Dol – home of the famous hrapoćuša cake full of walnuts and strong ingredients, resembling Brač’s karst!

If you want truly royal experience of cycling, set out on the longest of all tracks – St. Juraj!

This 180.1 km long road takes you to all the places on the island of Brač, and it rightfully bears the name of the island’s patron saint. It contains the best of everything - the most beautiful bell tower of parish church in Ložišća, whose author is Ivan Rendić; church of St. Peter with a pine grooving from its roof in Nerežišća, magical Golden Cape in Bol that changes shape depending on the wind and sea currents; church of Christ King in Selca – the so called Brač Cathedral, early-Christian basilica in Povlja, Masonry School in Pučišća and the Island of Brač Museum in Škrip!

CULTURAL SITES WORTH VISITING. Did you know that Brač is a true treasury of worthy cultural-historical and sacral heritage? Although sightseeing of certain locations can be combined with riding along cycling roads, to visit Brač particularly for its cultural heritage is a great idea in pre- and post-season. Our starting point would be Selca, a place of the same-named municipality that is known as the centre of Brač culture – beautiful stone alleys and squares reveal long tradition of masonry, while the greatest church on the island – Brač’s Cathedral, keeps many more jewels of sacral heritage, like the sculpture of Christ’s Heart by Ivan Meštrović.

Image result for povlja

Nearby village Povlja also has many curiosities – maybe you didn’t know that there you can find one of the oldest Croatian language and cultural-historical monuments, like Povaljska Charter and Povaljski Threshold, and early-Christian basilica from 6th century? This is just one of even 116 noted Brač’s sacral objects distinguished by different style!

Much aware of this enormous treasury of our greatest island, leading men of County’s tourism published cultural tourist guide several years ago, with a concept of itinerary, where you can find true sightseeing jewels – from Baroque parish churches and their worthy altarpieces, to medieval churches with characteristic hanging stone arch (like the one in Sv.Petra Dol) with later upgraded distaff-shaped  bell tower.

Renowned names like Juraj Dalmatianc, Nikola Firentinac or Brač’s
sculptor Nikola Lazanić are the makers of worthy altar reliefs often found in
these sacral buildings.

BRAČ HAS HAD ITS
DRAGONS - FOR AGES! But, do not miss a visit to true stars of Brač’s cultural heritage – like Island of Brač Museum in
Škrip, which will delight you with series of fragments of early-Christian stone
furniture, or Dragon’s Cave dating back even further in past!

This fascinating cave with a relief of a dragon, after which it was named, combines Slavic mythology and Christian iconography, and it’s a real wonder it didn’t catch the eye of authors of the most popular fantasy series Game of Thrones! Together with Dragon’s Cave make sure to include Blaca Desert to your itineraries; it is for centuries upgraded monastery in rocky desert, rich with contents that were  part of Glagolitic priests’ everyday lives.

ATRAKTIVAN I U PREDSEZONI. Kako god – i kad god!

PUT DO SRCA OTOKA.

Image result for uvati vitar 2018 hotspots

Petra s borom u krovu u Nerežišćima, čarobni Zlatni rat u Bolu koji mijenja oblik ovisno o vjetru i morskim strujama, crkvu Krista kralja u Selcima – takozvanu Bračku katedralu, ranokršćansku baziliku u Povljima, Klesarsku školu u Pučišćima i Muzej otoka Brača u Škripu!

Image result for povlja

Beauties of Makarska Riviera are hard to resist

Officially the most beautiful beach in Europe, active vacation, the most beautiful hotels, apartments and vacation houses – Makarska Riviera is one of the most desirable destinations and an excellent choice for vacation throughout the year.

What a view! That's the first thing that crosses your mind when you climb up one of numerous Biokovo peaks and take a look at the sea. There's nothing more beautiful, Brela and Gradac locals will say, who have this mountain encrypted in their DNA; than recognizable image of Makarska Riviera. It used to enrich holiday albums and postcards, now it lures Facebook and Instagram likes. Its beauty is hardy resistible, so you will want to take long a walk along one of its arranged roads or take a ride in a bus as long as the road goes.

It is a challenge for free climbers, mountaineers, paragliders and speleologists, unavoidable destination of hunting tourism, irresistible oasis of nature enthusiasts and a favourite polygon for cyclists.

There are six marked cycling roads that go through Makarska Riviera. The most demanding of them all is Biokovo tour, which leads along Biokovo road to Makarska and Tučepi; usually chosen by professionals and recreationists with high level of fitness. Although the road is asphalted in all its length (61,2 km), what makes it difficult are high climbs, so it takes you about 3 hours to get to St. Jure, 1762 metres high, the highest peak on Biokovo and second highest in Croatia. There is Amphore nearby, which was with its 790 m the deepest pit on Biokovo,  until 10 years ago when Mokre noge were discovered with almost 840 m.

More than hundred species of songbirds, chamois, mouflons, wolves and around 40 endemic plants, subterranean waters and karst springs, unique net-like karst that resembles Moon craters and a beautiful botanical garden Kotišina – there is no end to the richness of this place so Biokovo was pronounced, in 1981 a nature park.

The
most beautiful legends

In botanical
garden in Kotišina above Makarska, founded by famous Makarska Franciscan Jure
Radić, rises the Great Kaštel. According to a legged, during Turkish siege one
lady who lived in a fort hit a Turkish soldier with a large piece of cheese, so
Turks retreated very quickly, believing the fort is full of food supplies.
There are several more preserved forts from the times of Ottoman intrusions,
among which the most attractive are Zalina fort in Igrane, remains of a fort in
Podaca and smaller fort on Gradina hill above Drvenik. After construction of
famous Neretva bridge, in 1568, famous Mimar Hajrudin came to Makarska, student
of the greatest Ottoman architect Sinan, but his buildings, unfortunately, were
not preserved.

If we go further back in past, well known legend of this region says that picturesque place with beautiful beaches, Igrane was named after Igraynea, mother of Roman general Arthorius Lucius Castus, who owned large estates near Podstrana. There his grave was found, and British historian John Matthews, to the astonishment of the Britons, thinks that it is actually the great king Arthur, the leader of Round Table, ruler of Camelot and the owner of Excalibur sword.

Legends do not necessarily have to come from the far past, and this is confirmed by one that originated around 10 years ago in Makarska. Authors are tourists who claim that a statue of a seagull depicting a local lad with a foreign lady in a hug, brings luck.

Since it was created in 2006, on 100th anniversary of Makarska tourism, it is believed that happiness in love will follow those who touch the breast of lad's girlfriend, so even the most sceptic ones cannot resist the temptation.

Franciscan monastery in Makarska is a not-to-miss destination for culture
lovers. Monastery's library keeps over five thousand books, 24 incunabula and
manuscripts, and in archive there are even 369 Turkish documents. Tourists in
Makarska Riviera do not miss to visit Malacological museum with rich collection
of sea snails and shellfish of the Adriatic and the entire world, founded in
1963 by a famous Franciscan monk of this area, Jure Radić, the very same one
who founded the botanical garden on Biokovo from the beginning of our story.

Picturesque landscape with hills, a stream and a cave, very near Makarska, reminded bishop Juraj Carić of Lourdes, so he founded a sanctuary in Vepric dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. A chapel was erected there with sacristy, altar on a square, a confessional, Way of the Cross stations, a home for spiritual exercises, procession path, and due to the beauty and peace it offers, it is visited throughout the year, especially during the pilgrimage time, on 11 February, 25 March, 15 August and 7 and 8 September.

Korčula - medieval beauty which many rulers tried to conquer

IT HAS CONQUERED THE BIG SCREEN AND – THE SEVENTH FORCE! Korčula has accomplished what not many could – it has conquered the seventh force! Journalists from all over the world arrive to this town to be delighted by its beauties, just like TV producer and two-time Emmy winner Ashley Colburn. By choosing to include wine tasting in her promo video about the island she pointed out the fact that Korčula is a home to many autochthonous and top-quality wine varieties (best opportunity to taste them is Wine Festival in July). Also, she added House of Marco Polo to the list of a must-see attractions in her documentary WOW Croatia!

St. Mark cathedral - Ornaments

Cameras just love Korčula! Proof enough is the most recent film that
spread the word of its beauty – Venuto al
mondo
(2013), whose main protagonist is famous Almodovar muse – Penelope
Cruz.

The town was also proudly presented in Nova TV’s summer commercial– it
depicts fascinating Moreška sword dance and its red and black-dressed knights
as they boldly wave their swords.

All this blends
nicely into a strategy of the head people of Korčula’s tourism.

Their goal is to promote the town as a destination for chosen clients and emphasize cultural experience one can get upon the visit. Special effort is made into creating synergy between all tourism participants

A FIVE STAR CULTURAL DESTINATION. Just a glance of sophisticated private
and hotel accommodation facilities shows that Korčula is becoming an elite
holiday destination.

Hotels and villas of modern and minimalistic design complement images of
sea-mountain landscape with their shiny, turquoise pools.

Various luxury contents have been present in world tourism for some time now, but what Korčula has always cherished in particular are 5-star cultural contents. Lonely Planet especially pointed out St. Mark’s Cathedral. It dominates a lovely square at the very heart of the town and attracts attention of visitors with interesting details on its exterior: beautifully carved bell tower, intriguing two-tailed mermaid, figures of Adam and Eve and of an elephant.

Sharp journalist’s eye spotted also Abbey Treasury - one of the richest collections on islands, with especially valuable poliptych Our Lady with Saints by Blaž Jurjev Trogiranin from 1431. Korčula Town Museum also keeps valuable cultural treasure: collections of shipbuilding, stonemasonry and maritime collection – shortly – exhibits depicting city life of Korčula from middle ages onwards.

St. Mark cathedral - Ornaments

Imposing, wide stone steps leave a special impression and additionally compliment magnificence of Tower Revelin from the 14th century, where permanent exhibition about Moreška is set. The exhibition truly enriches the experience of this exceptional dance.

Even greater choice of cultural contents is going to be presented once the House of Marco Polo is renewed (2020) and upon opening of Tower of All Saints, which is to get new architectural solution.

Image may contain: 1 person, standing, child, beard and outdoor

BROOTHERHOODS’ PROCESSIONS, SWORD DANCES, FESTIVALS, CONCERTS… if you are a true culture enthusiast, you will also be delighted by Korčula’s intangible cultural treasures. If you are there during great religious holidays, we recommend impressive processions of Korčula’s brotherhoods. Of course, an absolute must are sword dances – Moreška, Kumpanija and Moštra. With small differences they are performed in different places on the island and in Korčula (more frequently during Korčula Cultural Summer).

Enjoy in an unusual atmosphere created by these dances, charged with patriotism, feelings of admiration and thrill, but exceptional sword-dance skills as well! Those who like classical music will definitely enjoy events held in front of St. Mark’s Cathedral. Literature enthusiasts will be delighted by the fact that in July Korčula will become – the literature centre of Europe! From 11 to 28 July 2019 one can enjoy in poetry, history, modern and children literature and travel writing, dealing with topics tied to Korčula in various ways!

World renowned Korčula Baroque Festival (31 August-14 September 2019) offers top music performances by exquisite artists. Therefore, hop on the first ferry and - surrender yourselves to Korčula’s magic!

JOIN PROCESSION “ZA KRIŽEN” (FOLLOWING THE CROSS) – TRUE EXPRESSION OF HVAR’S AUTHENTICITY. The extent to which Hvar is a specific island can be experienced in pre-Easter time, and if you ask us, it is Hvar that is one of the most interesting locations for spending the biggest Christian holiday.

Apart from great Easter food (from sirnice and all sorts of Easter cakes decorated with colourful eggs in local homes, to cooked ham and eggs Benedict in luxurious offer of the restaurants), great motivation for a visit is procession “Za križen”, which has been held constantly for 5 centuries, and as such was included on UNESCO list of intangible heritage in 2009.

Being a part of the procession is a unique spiritual experience that will please the hearts of religious tourism enthusiasts, but also of all believers who want to celebrate the biggest Christian holiday in a very specific way. The procession starts at the same time in six different places (Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanj and Vrboska), with a mass of believers, cross-holder who sometimes has to wait to get that honour for even 20 years and chosen singers that perform the most important part of the procession – passion text from 15th century – Our Lady’s Weep.

Dubrovnik Tourism & The End Of "Thrones"

The hit book series and HBO adaptation Game Of Thrones has changed the nature of tourism in Croatia. Because the series is wildly popular around the world, and many of its most significant locations are filmed in Croatia, the country has seen a measurable uptick in visitors throughout the show’s run on HBO.

This is something you’ve undoubtedly heard about by now with particular regard to the capital city of Dubrovnik (which is the basis for the fictional capital of King’s Landing). However, it’s spread around the country as well; Hot Spots previously profiled a Game Of Thrones tour in Split, for instance.

It’s still Dubrovnik that’s experienced a legitimate tourism phenomenon though. Long recognized as a gorgeous Mediterranean city teeming with history, and a nice alternative to better-known destinations in Italy and Greece, it’s now one of the hottest places in the world to visit. Some simply want a glimpse of the closest thing to a real King’s Landing; some want to do specific tours and sightseeing related to the show; and some, in all likelihood, simply want to appreciate it for what it is, even if it came to their attention through Game Of Thrones.

It’s all quite exciting, though it certainly has its downsides as well. Dubrovnik has become susceptible to annoying crowds, and could be said to have lost a touch of its innocence or authenticity along the way. The Thrones-driven throngs of tourists have landed the city on lists of places being ruined by tourism, and it’s not a stretch to understand why, even if the word “ruined” may be somewhat harsh. Now, however, the city faces an interesting crossroads. Game Of Thrones will wrap up this spring with its finale season, bringing an almost decade-long cultural phenomenon to an end, and potentially changing things for this wonderful Croatian city.

In the immediate future there probably won’t be much of a change. It’s not as if the finale of Thrones will simply sever the public’s interest in it. In fact, one could even imagine tourism to spike immediately following the finale, both because it will coincide with the beginning of the summer season and because this is going to be one of the biggest fictional events in recent history, and will cause lasting, lingering excitement.

On top of the carryover effect, it’s also worth noting that Game Of Thrones is likely to endure in several ways:

  • HBO has already ordered a spinoff of the series, delving into the vast fantasy world and/or history created by author George R.R. Martin. Reports have been somewhat all over the place as to what precise topics the spinoff will concern, as well as whether it will be a one-off or one of many projects. It is fairly safe to assume that Thrones will live on through a second show though, and this could conceivably extend Dubrovnik’s relevance to fans - particularly if King’s Landing is part of the future project(s).
  • Game Of Thrones will also likely enjoy sustained popularity through gaming. To date, the show has been surprisingly weak on this front. Telltale had a decent but short-lived series revolving around the show, and a few disappointing mobile games have come out as well. Additionally, some of the online casino networks known for their inventive and alluring bonus structures as well as their vast collections of games have hosted a Thrones-based slot machine, which has actually been consistently entertaining. The slot game may be the most likely to endure, but the end of the show could also bring brand new games, which could conceivably keep people excited about the series for years more to come.
  • There may also be books still to come, though this is increasingly in doubt. Martin had originally planned two more large, jam-packed novels to complete his written series, and may still adhere to this plan. He’s a notoriously meticulous writer who’s been very slow about penning these final works, but if he does - and if they’re released over the course of several more years - it will keep people interested, keep people engaged in re-watching the HBO series, and potentially keep Dubrovnik crowded.

These three factors - spinoffs, games, and books - will all, together, keep Game Of Thrones relevant long after the spring of 2019. They may also mean that things remain unchanged in Dubrovnik. At the same time though, interest in the fantasy may not always translate to such massive interest in tourism.

It could simply be that as the story endures and extends in various forms, King’s Landing is emphasized less, and thus the Dubrovnik connection starts to lessen. It may be that other filming locations move to the forefront via the planned spinoff, or spinoffs. And it may simply be that interest naturally ebbs after a while, as Thrones remains popular but not as popular as it’s been.

In time, the tourism boom will likely subside one way or another. It may even be that when all is said and done, and the crowds dissipate some, the show will simply become yet another fascinating aspect of the city’s history.

It is surely due to its location in the very heart of the Hvar Town, and the impressive Venetian and Austrian architecture, which blends perfectly with the unique architectural ensemble of the old town Loggia and the Clock Tower.

Upon completion of the renovation, the hotel will have gone from the present number of 73 rooms to a smaller number of 45 luxury rooms and suites, which will be of larger square-size.

With the goal to position the product further into the luxury segment, the hotel will get an indoor swimming pool, a luxury spa and two outdoor terraces, one of which is the terrace of the new San Marco Restaurant, overlooking the central square and historic core of Hvar Town, creating an ideal place for tasting selected dishes and local delicacies.
