Do you believe in magic? If you come to Zagreb, you will see that we do. The old name of our city – Agram – says it all.

Wherever you go, there is a gram of Zagreb’s most beautiful stories waiting for you. So, let us take you for a “špancirancija” with your local storyteller – Purgerica (“lady from Zagreb”), a licenced tourist guide in our capital.

Now, what is a “špancirancija”? It is a sort of an old Zagreb slang word, derived from German, and it means a promenade-style, galant walk. And when we say galant, we mean Zagreb-in-the-Orient-Express-era-galant. Imagine this – the year is 1929, you have just stepped down from your train at Zagreb’s Central Rail Station, the first thing you see is a gorgeous green park, with neo-classic palaces embracing it, a fountain humming in its centre, and a golden-yellow Art Padillion at the top of the park, waiting for your visit.

First old cars are slowly driving by, a man in a top hat is offering you a carriage ride. But no, you must go – you have arranged to meet your friends at the decadent art-deco hotel, built for the guests of the Orient Express. As you enjoy on its terrace, shaded by unusual red-flowered chestnut trees, gossip stories come to your ears. The famous Josephine Baker is in Zagreb. Welcome to “Servus My Fair Zagreb”, a themed walking tour, inspired by Zagreb’s crazy, jazzy, decadent 1920s and 30s!

In Zagreb, it is always a good time to stop time. And then travel through it, by the magic of words, paired with the fine craft of storytelling and some of Zagreb’s most famous Down Town sites. Let Purgerica tell you how time stopped at the very end of the 19th century, when the Grand Earthquake hit our capital, and forever changed its image, to a Viennese-like city, which will simply steal your heart with its hidden old-school charm. This tour will take you from the Grand Central Station, along Zagreb’s most famous park – Zrinjevac, which turned from a muddy farmers market into the most wanted zone for to “see, and to be seen”.

The mix of historical facts, interesting details from the lives of old Zagrebians, gossip and legends, will tell you how we built the first cafeteria and hotel, why does coffee in modern-day Zagreb have to last at least one hour, where did we enjoy Sunday matinee concerts on the open, dressed up elegantly for the occasion, and what kind of a huge scandal was brought on by a “mushroom” which was waisting too much water. Did you write something with a pen today? Great.

Purgerica will take you to see where  Slavoljub Penkala, the famous inventor of the first mechanical pencil, lived and what exactly did he eat for breakfast every single morning at 10 am. Following the rails of the old-horse tram, you might hear about the elegant, first-ever department store in Zagreb, taste some authentic, vintage candy, wrapped in red velvet, and hopelessly fall in love with Zagreb’s Green Horseshoe, as it once was.

If we sparked interest and you would like to take the “Servus My Fair Zagreb” tour, visit Purgerica’s  Facebook and Instagram page or contact her via email [email protected] or via text, Whatsapp, Viber or call the number: +385 91 6363 661.

Welcome to the city with a storytelling spirit!

You’ve probably heard about the famous Imotski lakes – the red one and the blue one, which will be listed on the UNESCO Geoparks list in 2020. But did you know that this area is generally full of lakes, which don’t have roads leading to them, but are great locations for active holidays, hiking and sightseeing?

And best of all, they are surrounded by many sinkholes, hillforts, dry lakes, hills, cascading vineyards and archeological sites – in other words, a lot of content for nature lovers and historical heritage! Therefore, why not explore the magical world of the Dalmatian hinterland? If you are looking for a great idea for an interesting trip, let our text serve as an inspiration for you!

Frenchman Frederic Swierczynski reached the bottom of one lake back in 2017 and provided Imotski locals with a historic moment – with a dive right down to the bottom of the mysterious Red Lake at a depth of 245 metres!

Image result for tz imotski
Red Lake

This venture was not at all without considerable danger, due to a number of significant factors – first of all, to reach a dive position, it requires considerable mountaineering skills and involves a number of potential dangers – among other things, gases which we don’t know the behaviour of at certain depths.

But the adrenaline lover from Jacques Cousteau’s home country didn’t want to give up – with the heartfelt help (and the thunderous applause!) of locals, a diving club and mountaineering company who also did a lion’s share of the work, he solved the mystery which was thousands of years old – we now know much more about the underwater world of this karst phenomenon, about the organisms living at great depths, sponges, sediment, water…

Image result for imotski modro jezero

By the way, the Red Lake is named after the colour of the steep cliffs that surround it, and the people around it are the subject of many legends, especially the one about Gavan’s castle (inquire about it with the hospitable locals!). The mysterious character of the Red Lake is also compounded by the fact that you simply can’t throw a pebble into it – give it a try and let us know if you succeeded!

The Imotski Tourist Board has posted a four-minute-long promotional video on their YouTube channel, showing the amazing beauty of Imotski’s lakes. In addition to the Imotski Tourist Board, the video is also promoted by the Croatian National Tourist Board and the Split – Dalmatia County Tourist Board, the promotional video will also be featured at several European tourist film festivals.

The lakes are as if they have been divided – while the Red Lake is dark and inaccessible, and most admire it from afar, except for a few true lovers who have decided to tackle it (Frederic claims to have dived into many waters around the world, but the Red Lake completely fascinated him!), the Blue Lake is more ‘’gentle’’ and is also accessible for swimming.

Image result for GALIPOVAC
Galipovac

Treat yourself to a great break from the classic sea and beach package and bathe in this lake of a truly magical colour, and if you find yourself in Imotski when it dries up, play football with the locals at its very bottom!

Lesser known, but no less beautiful are Lokvičićko Lake (or Mamić Lake), Knezović Lake and Galipovac.

Image result for MAMIĆA JEZERO
Mamić lake

Together with the Imotski field (Imotsko polje) and the opposite Prološko lake, this trefoil of lakes makes a unique whole. In addition to the most famous and largest of them all, Galipovac, there are vistas and landing sites, while Mamić and Knezović are lakes, although they are much smaller in terms of their surface area, their inaccessibility and surrounding environment are similar to that of the Red Lake.

Green lake

And the real star among the less developed lakes of the Imotski area is the Green Lake – because of its beautiful, icy turquoise green, it has attracted foreign filmmakers as well as numerous guests who agree on one thing: ‘’This is not a trendy trip, but it is worth the effort.’’

‘’A great environment and hiking opportunities!’’.

If you want to find out what the magic is all about, get the team together and head over to Imotski this weekend!

And we have found one! South, uninhabited side of the island offers a unique experience, mostly reserved for sailors and very few adventurists ready for a long walk in order to reach intimate beaches and secluded bays.

Šolta’s wild nature reveals itself in full glory right on this side, where rocks and bays with just a few fishermen houses alternate. From Livka, a bay with underwater site gladly visited by divers, to irresistible beaches of Stračinska, Grabova and Senjska (in Senjska Illyrian queen Teuta allegedly had a castle) you can enjoy in every inch of the shore.

Officially the most beautiful beach in Europe, active vacation, the most beautiful hotels, apartments and vacation houses – Makarska Riviera is one of the most desirable destinations and an excellent choice for vacation throughout the year.

What a view! That’s the first thing that crosses your mind when you climb up one of numerous Biokovo peaks and take a look at the sea. There’s nothing more beautiful, Brela and Gradac locals will say, who have this mountain encrypted in their DNA; than recognizable image of Makarska Riviera. It is a challenge for free climbers, mountaineers, paragliders and speleologists, unavoidable destination of hunting tourism, irresistible oasis of nature enthusiasts and a favourite polygon for cyclists.

There are six marked cycling roads that go through Makarska Riviera. The most demanding of them all is Biokovo tour, which leads along Biokovo road to Makarska and Tučepi; usually chosen by professionals and recreationists with high level of fitness. Although the road is asphalted in all its length (61,2 km), what makes it difficult are high climbs, so it takes you about 3 hours to get to St. Jure, 1762 metres high, the highest peak on Biokovo and second highest in Croatia. There is Amphore nearby, which was with its 790 m the deepest pit on Biokovo,  until 10 years ago when Mokre noge were discovered with almost 840 m.

More than hundred species of songbirds, chamois, mouflons, wolves and around 40 endemic plants, subterranean waters and karst springs, unique net-like karst that resembles Moon craters and a beautiful botanical garden Kotišina – there is no end to the richness of this place so Biokovo was pronounced, in 1981 a nature park.

The most beautiful legends

In botanical garden in Kotišina above Makarska, founded by famous Makarska Franciscan Jure Radić, rises the Great Kaštel. According to a legged, during Turkish siege one lady who lived in a fort hit a Turkish soldier with a large piece of cheese, so Turks retreated very quickly, believing the fort is full of food supplies. There are several more preserved forts from the times of Ottoman intrusions, among which the most attractive are Zalina fort in Igrane, remains of a fort in Podaca and smaller fort on Gradina hill above Drvenik. After construction of famous Neretva bridge, in 1568, famous Mimar Hajrudin came to Makarska, student of the greatest Ottoman architect Sinan, but his buildings, unfortunately, were not preserved.

If we go further back in past, well known legend of this region says that picturesque place with beautiful beaches, Igrane was named after Igraynea, mother of Roman general Arthorius Lucius Castus, who owned large estates near Podstrana. There his grave was found, and British historian John Matthews, to the astonishment of the Britons, thinks that it is actually the great king Arthur, the leader of Round Table, ruler of Camelot and the owner of Excalibur sword.

Legends do not necessarily have to come from the far past, and this is confirmed by one that originated around 10 years ago in Makarska. Authors are tourists who claim that a statue of a seagull depicting a local lad with a foreign lady in a hug, brings luck.

Since it was created in 2006, on 100th anniversary of Makarska tourism, it is believed that happiness in love will follow those who touch the breast of lad’s girlfriend, so even the most sceptic ones cannot resist the temptation.

Picturesque landscape with hills, a stream and a cave, very near Makarska, reminded bishop Juraj Carić of Lourdes, so he founded a sanctuary in Vepric dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. A chapel was erected there with sacristy, altar on a square, a confessional, Way of the Cross stations, a home for spiritual exercises, procession path, and due to the beauty and peace it offers, it is visited throughout the year, especially during the pilgrimage time, on 11 February, 25 March, 15 August and 7 and 8 September.

It is so appreciated that it often serves as a gift in state visits (for example, it was given to Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis). Usually it is kept framed like an art piece, as it actually is! Agave lace mustn’t be wet, ironed or washed, but if kept carefully it can last for a very long time – there are even 100 years old specimens – buy, or at least see specimens of this gentle, magic handicraft!

ENJOY IN MEDITERRANEAN DIET…AND KLAPA PERFORMANCES. This will especially gladden gastronomads – is there a better way to ‘round up’ healthy and tasty Mediterraean dinne than enjoying in harmonious sounds of klapa (a cappela group) singing? Idyllic Hvar’s restaurants are aware of this beautiful synergy, so not rarely will your attractive fish menu, together with olive oil and aromatic herbs, be spiced up with performances of local klapa groups!

Skills, knowledge and customs tied to healthy and tasty Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes values of hospitality, intercultural dialogue and creativity, made it a part of UNESCO list of intangible world heritage in 2013; while klapa multipart singing, recognizable for its characteristic harmony, melody and internal musical structure, was included on the very same list a year earlier. To the joy of all gourmets, these two items that nurture body and soul blend perfectly – reach out for a dose of Hvar’s hedonism with UNESCO mark!

JOIN PROCESSION “ZA KRIŽEN” (FOLLOWING THE CROSS) – TRUE EXPRESSION OF HVAR’S AUTHENTICITY. The extent to which Hvar is a specific island can be experienced in pre-Easter time, and if you ask us, it is Hvar that is one of the most interesting locations for spending the biggest Christian holiday.

Image result for za križen

Apart from great Easter food (from sirnice and all sorts of Easter cakes decorated with colourful eggs in local homes, to cooked ham and eggs Benedict in luxurious offer of the restaurants), great motivation for a visit is procession “Za križen”, which has been held constantly for 5 centuries, and as such was included on UNESCO list of intangible heritage in 2009.

Image result for za križen

Being a part of the procession is a unique spiritual experience that will please the hearts of religious tourism enthusiasts, but also of all believers who want to celebrate the biggest Christian holiday in a very specific way. The procession starts at the same time in six different places (Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče, Vrbanj and Vrboska), with a mass of believers, cross-holder who sometimes has to wait to get that honour for even 20 years and chosen singers that perform the most important part of the procession – passion text from 15th century – Our Lady’s Weep.

IMPOSSIBLE TO RESIST. What could be the connection between the father of Croatian literature, Marko Marulić, famous emperor Diocletian and Illyric queen Teuta?

Image may contain: ocean, sky, outdoor, water and nature

An irresistible pearl on a salty surface of Split waters – the island of Šolta! Queen Teuta of divine beauty hid in its bays and allegedly built her court; Diocletian had a fish pond there; Marko Marulić wrote some of his most significant works there, enjoying in soft humming of the sea and silence of Nečujam, where he gladly gathered with his friends.

But, to have an imperial holiday on this island – you do not have to be of royal blood or an artistic soul – although the peace and untouched nature will be truly pleasant and inspiring there!

photo-75_1

THEY SAY THAT A WAY TO SOMEONE’S HEART IS THROGH THE STOMACH, so we recommend starting with an adventure – for your palates! What about a portion of fresh, just caught grilled fish, seasoned with olive oil and wild aromatic herbs like marjoram or rosemary? This is the way to explore the island through your plate, for this emblematic, recognizable Mediterranean dish unites all the best of Šolta – fresh fish, awarded olive oil made of autochthonous varieties oblica and levatinka, wild herbs and of course, a glass of magic dobričić, homemade Šolta’s wine, which is one of the ‘parents’ of famous plavac mali!

No photo description available.

This wine is a true gastronomic treasure – like plavac, but more elegant. Discover its deep dark red colour and aromas of dry fruit, blueberry and a dry tobacco leaf! Together with wine, Šolta’s brands include olive oil made of aforementioned varieties, and a result of years-long tradition of beekeeping – wild rosemary honey locally called Olintio; they are worth finding, buying and even taking home.

04

If you visit local beekeepers or oil refineries like Olynthie-nature in Gornje Selo, you can get familiar even with the process of production of these great gifts of nature, olive oil being even in the register of protected marks of originality and geographic origin of the European Commission.

HIKE, CYCLE, DIVE, SAIL…DISCOVER BEAUTIFUL BAYS AND BEACHES. You’re wondering where to spend tasty and healthy Mediterranean food calories? There are numerous possibilities!

Image may contain: ocean, sky, mountain, cloud, outdoor, nature and water

From seaside resorts like Maslenica, Stomorska, Nečujam or Rogač set out to explore the island’s inland or set out towards the shore from southern inland villages like Grohote, Gornje Selo, Srednje Selo or Donje Selo.

Image may contain: people walking, plant and outdoor

Depending on your preferences, in this beautiful ambience you can hike or cycle, all roads are charted on a map available in all tourist info centres.

Image may contain: mountain, ocean, sky, outdoor, water and nature

If you prefer water activities, set out on an unforgettable kayaking adventure – if your starting point is beach in Maslinica, you can expect a romantic adventure of discovering nearby islets and the most amazing sunset you have ever seen. If you choose main Nečujam beach, you will enjoy in heavenly beauty of Velika uvala and unique acoustic features – Vallis surda or deaf bay will turn every sound into just a silent whisper!

Image may contain: sky and outdoor

If you would like to explore underwaters of these stunning turquoise bays, you will be delighted by more than rich flora and fauna hidden by caves and vertical rocks of the south side of the island – and even by a few sunken ships or remains of Diocletian’s fish pond! Our warmest recommendation is a tour with a licenced guide, with whose help you can even dive at night – for a specially spectacular experience! If you are a true sailor, Šolta won’t disappoint you – yachtsmen have at their disposal two mooring places in Stomorska and Rogač, and modern equipped marina in front of Martinis Marchi Hotel in Maslinica.

ŠOLTA’S JACKSON POLLOCK. Did you know that Šolta has given some excellent artists, like Eugen Buktenica Đenko, the most significant representative of Dalmatian naïve art? His artistic tradition was continued by Vicko Buktenica, who followed the footsteps of his famous uncle.

Image result for grohote

To naïve art he also added abstraction, so many have compared him to one of the most prominent figures of abstract expressionism, Jackson Pollock. It would be a shame not to visit Grohote and Gallery of Naïve art with permanent exhibition of paintings by Eugen and Vicko Buktenica, depicting  charming donkeys with golden crowns, emblematic owls, idyllic churches and wooden boats, and – Mate Mišo Kovač, all bursting with joyful colours and positive artistic energy.? The name Grohote actually means come on up – so what are you waiting for?

The hit book series and HBO adaptation Game Of Thrones has changed the nature of tourism in Croatia. Because the series is wildly popular around the world, and many of its most significant locations are filmed in Croatia, the country has seen a measurable uptick in visitors throughout the show’s run on HBO.

This is something you’ve undoubtedly heard about by now with particular regard to the capital city of Dubrovnik (which is the basis for the fictional capital of King’s Landing). However, it’s spread around the country as well; Hot Spots previously profiled a Game Of Thrones tour in Split, for instance.

It’s still Dubrovnik that’s experienced a legitimate tourism phenomenon though. Long recognized as a gorgeous Mediterranean city teeming with history, and a nice alternative to better-known destinations in Italy and Greece, it’s now one of the hottest places in the world to visit. Some simply want a glimpse of the closest thing to a real King’s Landing; some want to do specific tours and sightseeing related to the show; and some, in all likelihood, simply want to appreciate it for what it is, even if it came to their attention through Game Of Thrones.

SONY DSC

It’s all quite exciting, though it certainly has its downsides as well. Dubrovnik has become susceptible to annoying crowds, and could be said to have lost a touch of its innocence or authenticity along the way. The Thrones-driven throngs of tourists have landed the city on lists of places being ruined by tourism, and it’s not a stretch to understand why, even if the word “ruined” may be somewhat harsh. Now, however, the city faces an interesting crossroads. Game Of Thrones will wrap up this spring with its finale season, bringing an almost decade-long cultural phenomenon to an end, and potentially changing things for this wonderful Croatian city.

In the immediate future there probably won’t be much of a change. It’s not as if the finale of Thrones will simply sever the public’s interest in it. In fact, one could even imagine tourism to spike immediately following the finale, both because it will coincide with the beginning of the summer season and because this is going to be one of the biggest fictional events in recent history, and will cause lasting, lingering excitement.

On top of the carryover effect, it’s also worth noting that Game Of Thrones is likely to endure in several ways:

  • HBO has already ordered a spinoff of the series, delving into the vast fantasy world and/or history created by author George R.R. Martin. Reports have been somewhat all over the place as to what precise topics the spinoff will concern, as well as whether it will be a one-off or one of many projects. It is fairly safe to assume that Thrones will live on through a second show though, and this could conceivably extend Dubrovnik’s relevance to fans – particularly if King’s Landing is part of the future project(s).
  • Game Of Thrones will also likely enjoy sustained popularity through gaming. To date, the show has been surprisingly weak on this front. Telltale had a decent but short-lived series revolving around the show, and a few disappointing mobile games have come out as well. Additionally, some of the online casino networks known for their inventive and alluring bonus structures as well as their vast collections of games have hosted a Thrones-based slot machine, which has actually been consistently entertaining. The slot game may be the most likely to endure, but the end of the show could also bring brand new games, which could conceivably keep people excited about the series for years more to come.
  • There may also be books still to come, though this is increasingly in doubt. Martin had originally planned two more large, jam-packed novels to complete his written series, and may still adhere to this plan. He’s a notoriously meticulous writer who’s been very slow about penning these final works, but if he does – and if they’re released over the course of several more years – it will keep people interested, keep people engaged in re-watching the HBO series, and potentially keep Dubrovnik crowded.

These three factors – spinoffs, games, and books – will all, together, keep Game Of Thrones relevant long after the spring of 2019. They may also mean that things remain unchanged in Dubrovnik. At the same time though, interest in the fantasy may not always translate to such massive interest in tourism.

It could simply be that as the story endures and extends in various forms, King’s Landing is emphasized less, and thus the Dubrovnik connection starts to lessen. It may be that other filming locations move to the forefront via the planned spinoff, or spinoffs. And it may simply be that interest naturally ebbs after a while, as Thrones remains popular but not as popular as it’s been.

In time, the tourism boom will likely subside one way or another. It may even be that when all is said and done, and the crowds dissipate some, the show will simply become yet another fascinating aspect of the city’s history.

Glorious history of Hvar’s most beautiful hotel

The hotel will be rated with 5 stars  and will be the first heritage hotel on the sunniest island of the Mediterranean, opening its doors in season 2019. The hotel history dates back to the 13th centur, and in 1899, it was officially introduced under the name of “Elisabeth of Austria’s Spa Hotel”, as the Austrian empress Elisabeth was the patron and co-financer of its construction. Therefore, the soon-to-be-opened Hotel Palace will bear her name – Palace Elisabeth, Hvar Heritage Hotel. Re-embracing the original name of the hotel further emphasizes its rich heritage, which is characterized by numerous historical elements from the era of empress Sisi.

Hotel Palace Elisabeth

Member of the prestigious group of The Leading Hotels of the World

In 2019 Sunčani Hvar continues with the most significant investment in the portfolio, which is the renovation of Hotel Palace, worth 100 million kuna. Even before its opening, this most luxurious hotel on the island became a member of the elite hotel association of luxury hotels – The Leading Hotels of the World.

It is surely due to its location in the very heart of the Hvar Town, and the impressive Venetian and Austrian architecture, which blends perfectly with the unique architectural ensemble of the old town Loggia and the Clock Tower.

Upon completion of the renovation, the hotel will have gone from the present number of 73 rooms to a smaller number of 45 luxury rooms and suites, which will be of larger square-size.

With the goal to position the product further into the luxury segment, the hotel will get an indoor swimming pool, a luxury spa and two outdoor terraces, one of which is the terrace of the new San Marco Restaurant, overlooking the central square and historic core of Hvar Town, creating an ideal place for tasting selected dishes and local delicacies.

“It is a great honor for us to become members of the prestigious group The Leading Hotels of the World, which has over 400 luxury hotels and resorts in its consortium. Hotel Palace combines the highest standards of luxury with the vision to provide guests with top service and a unique experience, ” said Gordana Tomičić, president of the Management Board.

Most numerous arrivals from the US and British market

The unique structure of guests within Sunčani Hvar is still dominated by the emissive markets of the United States and Great Britain. The growth in arrivals from the US is at 26%, while from the UK is at 14%, compared to the previous business year. Other developed markets that have shown growth in arrivals are Australia, Brazil, Scandinavian and Western European countries.

Hvar’s Tourist Board confirms that the predictions and first numbers for the current season are very good, and the rich program of sports events in April, such as the traditional Easter Regatta, Otillo Swimrun and Mountain Madness Croatia, mark an excellent start of the season on the sunniest island of the Adriatic.

The 2019 ÖTILLÖ swimrun season kicked off with a very tough race. It ended up being a hard fought battle for the 3rd edition ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Series event on the island of Hvar, Croatia.

The Mediterranean setting had all the ingredients to make for a spectacular yet very tough swimrun race. The original  40,4 kilometres long course had to be changed as the currents made it to a true test, alternating technical trail running with long, challenging stretches of open-water swimming.

The Winners Jonas Ekman Fischer and Lars Ekman (SWE), Sailfish Team Bröderna Bäver, managed to pull away from the leading pack and cross the finish line as the first team after 4:51:51, almost 7 minutes ahead of Julien Pousson and Nicolas Remires (FRA), Team Envol.

The very strong Martin Flinta (SWE) & Helena Karaskova Erbenova (CZE) Team Thule Crew/Wolffwear Head SR team finished as first mixed team and 6th overall with the time of 5:01:50! The first women’s team Fanny Danckwardt & Desirée Andersson (SWE) Team Envol Fanny/Desirée completed an impressive race and finished after 5:24:12 and 10th Overall.

Hvar representatives at ÖTILLÖ Sprint Hvar and ÖTILLÖ Experience Hvar race

The day before the main race was organized shorter races: ÖTILLÖ Sprint Hvar and ÖTILLÖ Experience Hvar, offering the same experience as the longer and more demanding main race, just in a smaller format. These races had 150 competitors registered in 20 countries, and Hvar also had two representatives.

A representative of the Tourist Board of Hvar, Georges Buj and Marzia Marti, the marketing representative of the Sunčani Hvar hotels, a longtime partner of the event. Both of them have successfully finished the race.

“There were a lot of good teams in the front today, especially in the swim sections. Before the long run we just felt let`s go for it and we managed to gain a couple of minutes on the rest of the field in the uphill. We are very happy with the win and the good start into the season.”, said Jonas Ekam Fischer after finishing as overall winner with Lars Ekman (SWE), Sailfish Team Bröderna Bäver.

The island of Hvar, part of the Croatian Dalmatian islands, is considered one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world. With its rich cultural and historic heritage, ancient olive trees and vineyards, crystal clear waters, limestone rock and varied terrain, surrounded by the fabulous Pakleni islands, Hvar is the perfect destination for a ÖTILLÖ swimrun race. There is no doubt that Hvar lives up to ÖTILLÖ’s claim of having unique races in unique places!

The original 40,4 km race course of ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar had to be changed due to strong currents in the channel between Hvar and the Pakleni Islands. The crystal blue sea was at around 15 degrees and the longest swim crossing of 2 950 metres was shortened to about 2 700 metres. Still a true test for all competitors. The rainy weather made the conditions different for all the racers depending on where you were in the pack, it became a big challenge. A big part of the trail running was on technical trails, with a few tough climbs spicing up the challenge.

Several teams had to struggle to make it in time for the two cut offs. Some had to abandon after the long swim. The top teams pushed each other hard, chasing each other in a tight group all the way to the last swims before the finish line. The level of competition is mind blowing!

At all ÖTILLÖ swimrun World Series events teams race in pairs. Working wisely with your partner is decisive. Using each other’s strengths will push boundaries. The team experience is incomparable and can only be fully understood by those who have practiced it, and is part of why swimrun is growing so fast in popularity.

142 teams of two from 23 different nations travelled to Hvar to compete in the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar, a qualifier to the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship in the Swedish archipelago. The day prior to the race two shorter more accessible race were organised, the ÖTILLÖ Sprint Hvar and the ÖTILLÖ Experience Hvar, offering the same flavours as the longer more challenging race but in a smaller format. These races had close to 150 racers registered from a total of 20 nations.

Eight top teams at ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar qualify to the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship 2019, on 2 September 2019 in the Stockholm Archipelago; top 3 men, top 3 mixed, top 2 women.

Photographer: Pierre Mangez,

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY about a cuisine that combines sweet and sour, Greek and Roman, Byzantine and Venetian, all linked by a truly special ingredient – a quantum of stubborn, originally Dalmatian spite?

prsut 2

Dalmatian cuisine will spoil your palates with homemade prosciutto and cheese, traditional fish stew (brodet) and thick fish soups, risottos and gnocchi seasoned with tasty dips, sea food stews; all rounded up with homemade olive oil, Mediterranean aromatic herbs and matched with wide range of exquisite homemade wines. If you want to give your palates a true adventure, it’s high time to taste these sensual dishes – true gastronomic ambassadors of Dalmatian cuisine!

- DIOKLECIJANOV VIJENAC,AUTOR-ROBI BRALIC

A QUEEN CALLED PAŠTICADA. A true example of sweet-sour dish (see how Dalmatian cuisine is always a blend of extremes of some sort, unmatched by anyone?) is luxurious pašticada, gastro heritage of Venetia ad Byzantium, made even today for special occasions (due to its complex preparation) of beef aitchbone in wine, prosecco, vinegar, spices and vegetables. It is often accompanied by homemade gnocchi. Pašticada is so characteristic for this region that almost every household has its own way of preparing it; and it shares the throne with exquisite fish or meat dishes made under the baking lid!

Namely, if you haven’t tried veal, lamb or octopus under the iron lid, which enables food to be cooked and roasted at the same time, from a gastronomic point of view, you haven’t even been to Dalmatia, so do not miss it! If you visit the islands, let the magic of small family restaurants overwhelms you.

There, apart form aforementioned Dalmatian classics, you can indulge in carefully prepared specialties like mutton baked on a juniper spear, which stimulates with resin wood aroma, or for example – crunchy vitalac – ancient dish made of lamb offal served in the “lamb capital”, the island of Brač, which is also a gastro connection to Greeks.

Of course, if you prefer somewhat more modern gastronomic interpretations, there is a wide choice of modern gourmet oases – make yourself infatuated with octopus stew or burgers, monkfish medallions, cuttlefish with broad beans, shrimps carpaccio with olive dust and fig pearls, or an entire pot of shells, shrimps and pasta!

WINES WITH CHARACTER. True gastronomads and wine enthusiasts could draw you a map of Split-Dalmatia County in a second – according to areas where the best autochthonous wines are made! It’s a common knowledge for all who ever tried Kaštela’s crljenak – the darkest of all Dalmatia wines, or bogdanuša and plavac from Hvar and vugava from Vis – that in an elegant glass of wine one can discover a whole new world!

With its classy barrique touch and mild tastes of blackberry, blueberry and cherry crljenak will most certainly comply with those in favor of fruity, bold wines. Although it was tied to Italian primitivo and Californian zinfandel, it has nothing of their sweetness and softness, it is a true – wine with a character!

Even Vienna Court could not resist Hvar’s bogdanuša, which was served only for holidays due to its elegance; while Vis’ vugava overwhelms with discrete aromas of peach, almond and orange! If you prefer red wines, enjoy in full, rounded, delicate woody taste of Hvar’s plavac mali, captivating like a nicely dressed girl walking along Hvar’s waterfront!

SOMETHING SWEET FOR THE END. What kind of a meal would it be without a good, tasty dessert?

Image result for hvar vina

Beautiful rožata dates back to Venetian times, and it was considered a pride of Dalmatian desserts! It is cooked in a caramel coat, while a magic addition to a simple recipe that contains milk, eggs, vanilla and sugar is a scented rose liqueur! Split Cake will enchant you with rhapsodies of figs, almonds, walnuts, dates, raisins and rum, and eager Dalmatian housewives discovered that the dough and cream are made of even 10 eggs!

Rožada

Simple and delicious paradižet is made throughout Dalmatia, just as omnipresent fritule, kroštule and doughnuts, most commonly served in Dalmatian hinterland. Islands have their own trumps as well, just look at the list of Croatian intangible heritage goods and you will find there Dol’s hrapošćuša cake resembling the very Brač’s karst and famous Starigrad’s paprenjak! Combine them with a few drops of tempting lavender or carob liqueurs and you have finalized one great (and very tasty!) Dalmatian adventure!
