EXCELLENT TIMING. Stari Gard celebrates its  2400th birthday! And that its time has come in tourist sense as well is shown by recent trends on world market, where authentic Mediterranean places are highly rated  (for example, Italian Liguria and picturesque Cinque Terre have very fast become extremely popular worldwide due to social networks)!

stari-grad-hektorovic_1

Synchronizing current trends, rich history and genuine ambience whose preserved heritage goes back to even ancient times, are great attributes  of tourist attractively of Stari Grad. Is there a better moment to visit it but on its impressive 2400th anniversary, accompanied by many cultural, sports and entertaining events?

stari-grad-2_1

MAGNIFICENT JUBILANT YEAR. Although the entire 2016 is dedicated to this anniversary, central celebration will be held from September 7-11. An abundance of events have been planned, like festival of the sea and sailors Dani u vali (Days in Bay), anniversary symposium, lectures, workshops and gastronomic manifestations (do not miss presentation of Stari Grad restaurants NA BON PRO on June 13!), concerts and exhibitions – from ancient bread to painting crafts.

_dsf9203_1

May and June in Stari Grad will be marked by sport and music – more precisely, by cycling and klapa song! On May 28 festival of island singers Večer od Kantonjo was held, and as Croatian Brass Band Stari Grad is celebrating 140th anniversary this year, they have prepared series of concerts with surprise guests, which will be held during the entire summer!

poluotok-kabal_1

We would gladly visit Stari Grad on June 25th when klapa Cambi performs on Škor square, and concert of Gustafi will also be fun. They will perform at the party upon finishing cycling race Biciklom kroz baštinu (Cycling through heritage) (June 11 and 12). If you are a cycling enthusiast, and you would gladly be a part of the race, you should take this title literally – namely, the race goes through Stari Grad field, which has been under protection of UNESCO since 2008.

starogradsko-polje_1

Together with all mentioned events, many famous names will jollify Stari Grad this summer – from hosts, Faroski Kantaduri and chakavian poets from the island, to cellist Ana Rucner (August 8), Matija Dedić & Tedi Spalato (August 12), Crvena jabuka (August 13), Big Band Makarska & Marko Tolja (August 23).

FAIRYTALE-LIKE SIDE OF CROATIA

The enchanting, monumental castles with a flair of the mystical past are emblematic of Croatian Zagorje. To the delight of numerous guests and curious people, many of them are opened to visitors, and in some of them one can also stay or eat a delicious gourmet meal. We will single out some of the most attractive, and the choice is up to the reader!

trakošćan 1a

1. TRAKOŠĆAN

Magical Trakošćan with its surrounding constructions, gardens and forest park with a lake, reminds us of scenes from H.C. Andersen’s tales! Its impressive interior – from the beautiful knights and hunting hall to the sumptuous dining room, is simply breathtaking, and the entire castle with its environment is a protected historical complex. Visitors will also enjoy a display of a number of excellently preserved artifacts – from interesting covers of the Bible, items made of alabaster, ornate antique keys, chess sets, richly decorated jars and mugs, to the knightly armor!

Dvorci 1a

  1. VELIKI TABOR

Veliki Tabor is one of the most beautiful fortresses in northwesten Croatia, in Croatian Zagorje near Desinić. This building located at the altitude of 334m is a zero-category monument. Its name originates from the word tabor which denotes a war camp. It was built for defense from the Turks. Veliki Tabor is one of the best preserved medieval and Renaissance fortified towns of continental Croatia. The castle was built in the second half of the 15th century. It was built by the noble family Rattkay during the 16th century and remained in their possession until 1793. It had many famous masters: the Counts of Celje (who owned it at the earliest), Matija and Ivaniš Korvin, the Rattkay family, and the family of famous Croatian artist Oton Iveković. At the beginning of 90s of the 20th century, it is included among the Museums of Croatian Zagorje and operated as museum and excursion site.

gjalski

  1. GJALSKI

The luxurious ambience and warm interior colors of castle Gjalski simply ooze romance, and this former home of our famous writer Ksaver Šandor Gjalski is an ideal destination for couples, but also for all those who want to enjoy the authentic flair of ancient times. This literally royal ambience has been also recognized as an ideal environment for business purposes, so the castle, equipped with three multi-functional halls, eventually established itself as a favorite gathering place for business people and one of the truly original solutions for congress tourism!

dvorac_bezanec 1ab

  1. BEŽANEC

But what would the old castle be without ghosts and legends about them? If you’re really curious, visit the beautiful Bežanec, whose romantic old-fashioned rooms equipped with stylish furniture, are as we have heard, allegedly visited by benevolent female ghost! It is a beautiful female figure that supposedly shows itself to the couples in love, and casts good and miraculous spells on them! However, if you are not in the mood for the beyond, this hotel-castle offers a number of other „magical“ contents – from flying in a hot air balloon, to the sightseeing combined with horseback riding! Optionally, this can also be a quiet place for silent work, or a great gathering location for business meetings!

djurdjevac_1a

  1. ĐURĐEVAC

Lovers of cultural heritage and ancient art will certainly enjoy the fortress of Đurđevac, cultural monument of first category, whose ornaments, thanks to the wealthy bishop Sigismund Ernušt who had it built, reached the peak of the Renaissance style. The fort includes the “Croatian Louvre” – gallery space which consists of four lounges which boast valuable holdings – donations of Ivan Lacković Croata! Besides Đurđevac, a true gem for lovers of historical heritage is the Baroque castle Milijana with impressive black-and-white facade, and stylistic elements from the Baroque and Rococo period!

The elite tourism project in Croatia

Although Croatia undoubtedly has a huge potential for tourism, the offer for elite guests should be more elaborated. True, there are many agencies in our country that offer luxury, personalized service, but elite tourism potentials are, unfortunately, insufficiently used. But what would the tourist terminology actually mean in the context of the quality service of luxury tourism, and what exactly are guests with “deeper pockets” looking for?

Riva_Suncani_Hvar0096

Does luxury offer necessarily imply attributes such as luxury accommodation facilities with “golden taps”, glazed villas and luxury shops (Gucci, Prada) right next to the promenade? What is in this case with a large number of tourists who visit unusual places every year – such as Antarctica or Greenland, or take overnight trips to various holy sites at which flourishes all but luxury?

Foto:www.hurtigruten.com7c_Nina-Helland

Rich tourists are happy to travel to Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, to freeze on the Russian steppes, to climb on Tibet, to rush to the end of the world to see Easter Island who branded local archaeological sites up to the maximum, they enjoy olive picking in Tuscany and in our Istria… in short, they participate in the life of the site they have visited.

Dugoplje planinarenje1a

What is the secret?

Tourists who can afford such trips primarily go in search of experience offered by their unusual destination. Let us mention the example of famous actress Penelope Cruz who on the set of “Venuto al mondo”, has chosen a small picturesque village of Prigradica on Korcula instead of a luxury hotel for her haven, enjoying secluded walks and solitude of the fishing village in a beautiful, small stone villa. There are many renters who have noticed that a number of wealthy guests seeks harmonious islands and ancient stone houses in a secluded place, immersed in greenery and near the sea, but this is not a requirement – to them, privacy is much more important.

Luka-2008-450

They also seek small indigenous taverns in which one can eat excellent local food, and in any case they want to experience what they cannot experience at home – the authentic Mediterranean ambience, excellent cuisine, getting to know local customs and to interact with local people.

2a

One should bear in mind that wealthy guest on vacation escapes from his hectic environment in which luxury benefits of modern technology, with lavish shopping offer, are available to him 24/7. Therefore, we don’t have to wonder why is he bitterly disappointed when he arrives in our country: illegal constructions, crowded stalls with souvenirs „made in China“, and a lookout made of concrete villas competing to be as efficient as possible to block eachothers’ view! We forget that our guest escaped precisely from a similar environment.

Brač1

To such a guest profile, a classic concept of luxury doesn’t play a key role – it is the experience of a destination to which he decided to dedicate his week off that matters!

When it comes to somewhat demanding guests, or those seeking luxury and experience in a single package, the key to success is the constant availability, efficiency, speed, and highly individualized approach. Wealthy guests highly appreciate quick and comfortable transfer from one place to another, so in choosing a destination important role will be played by its transport accessibility.

Hamama 5

Proximity to major airports is very important, although extravagant demands like renting a helicopter for personal use, are no rarity. Luxury vessels such as yacht are being rented, and as an atypical form of accommodation, elegant villas or even the entire castles! All of the above should be included in the set of services that communicates tourism offer to such profile of guests, with essential representation of the authentic local story, good and quality guidance, and constant availability to the guest who paid a large sum of money for his stay, and what is most important – he knows what he pays for.

_DSC7657

Furthermore, wealthy guests typically want to experience an eventful stay in every aspect, which means that they want to get familiar with the desired destination as soon as possible. They are interested in visiting the cities and exclusive destinations, and if it comes to celebrity, often the tour takes place under the watchful eye of a bodyguard.

_DSC5890

While the engagement of a personal chef and a regular delivery of fresh groceries are usual accompanying requirements, they also hire wellness therapists and personal trainers, and if necessary, hair stylists and makeup artists.

brač 2

In the Croatian territory there are several travel agencies and spa & lifestyle clubs that can successfully cope with the demands of guests with high purchasing power – from luxury tours that include a visit to several most attractive domestic destinations within just a few days, to the spa centers that are able to, together with staff and all the necessary requisites, briefly “move” in someone’s mansion, boat, yacht…

IMG_1877

It is well-known that elite guests „can afford anything“, and it is up to us to provide them with adequate facilities. The tourism sector should develop a special “sensibility” for this, the most desirable type of guests, and the local „guestbook“ already includes such VIP names as Beyonce and Jay-Z, Roman Abramovič… We hope that in future they will be frequent visitors of our country, and since a good word travels fast, also the best promoters of local tourism!

IMG_2306

In any case it is a very complex subject and the realization of these goals should involve the local community and the top people of any destination that aspires to be a luxury one. The comparative advantages of Croatia through its cuisine, cultural tourism, preserved untouched nature and beautiful islands, should be integrated in an unique offer that will represent a comprehensive strategy with an adequate marketing promotion.

_DSC5667

If the approach is based on a well-thought out and quality strategy, which includes the whole community and is not “cobbled together” in a hurry, the results should follow soon. However, tourism strategies require some time and effort, because for a long time now the key to success in tourism hasn’t been based on chance or divine geographical features. We realize this from year to year and this summer, lesson was pretty painful.

“Zimmerfrei” renters and stands with grilled pilchards and kebabs along with local singers slowly become a thing of the past. The planning of high quality tourism must include architects, marketing experts, extremely well-trained accommodation owners who are fluent in foreign languages and modern technologies, digital experts – and tourism professionals with rich experience.

And finally, one more interesting fact. Aforementioned Antarctica that doesn’t boast luxurious swimming pools, shining sun or a crystal blue sea, nor a widely acclaimed gastronomic offer, and its nature nature is fairly uniform unless you are a passionate fan of snow/ice, has arrangements that are sold out for $ 45,000 in a week! But we’ve got plenty of attributes on basis of which a superb experience can be build – almost every part of our country has special features which many visitors would not resist. Developing of such deals with the targeted promotion of the particularities of each region, and the development of complex products for each of our destinations – should be part of the strategy of each municipality and community that wants to improve its offer and keep up with global competition.

Its web pages make the Wine Enthusiast content available worldwide. In view of all the above said, this is clearly a perfect opportunity for the promotion of Istria.

With regard to this exceptional honour and ranking among the TOP 10, the president of the Croatian Sommelier Club Mr. Franko Lukež said the following: ‘When the esteemed American Wine Enthusiast, with its 35 year long experience of where wine lives, ranks you among top ten wine tourist destinations in 2015 along with regions such as the Italian Piedmont, Spanish Galicia or French Loire and Rhône, then all the wine producers from the region – Istria in this case – have a big reason to celebrate. And, not only them! Wine should never be viewed without food. A glass of good wine is a natural ending of every good meal. The most exciting wine destinations are therefore locations offering excellent wines to accompany superb dishes: All is played out in glittering restaurant, rustic taverns or original farm households located in magnificent landscape. It is nice to be recognized by wine enthusiasts!’

With regard to the Wine Enthusiast’s ranking Istria among top ten wine regions in the world, Denis Ivošević, Director of the Istria Tourist Board, emphasized that each new recognition and ranking among world best destinations had always raised quality criteria and represented a huge obligation for them as the reputation of one’s own image in tourism had always been of the utmost importance. He continued by adding that this recognition was of special significance as it was awarded by a distinguished web portal with a reputation of an opinion maker as well as in view of Istrian ability and capacity of winning world influencers and offering creativity and innovation of its offer in the period following the four years of winning best TOP destination awards.

This recognition complements the numerous ones awarded to Istria in the last few years from all around the world, ranking it high:

Hvar – Renovation of a building housing Europe’s oldest public theatre in Hvar, Croatia, reveals layers of secrets from the past.

Already blessed with a wealth of culture and heritage including its status as the only island in the world with four UNESCO heritages, Croatia’s premier island of Hvar unearthed more treasures on December 30, 2014 with the presentation of preliminary findings of an archaeological dig under the oldest public theatre in Europe.

Renovation and restoration work on the impressive Arsenal building on the edge of Hvar Town’s fabled main square has been ongoing, and the latest phase in October revealed some archaeological secrets under the building’s floor which prompted the excavation.

Mentioned in Venetian documents as ‘the most beautiful and the most useful building in all Dalmatia’, the upper floor of the Arsenal is home to Europe’s oldest public theatre, constructed in 1612, but the preliminary findings presented show a much older past for the location, as local archaeological supervisor Eduard Viskovic explained to Digital Journal.

The Hvar public theatre was built in 1612. and is the oldest public theatre in Europe, less than 100 metres from the after beach parties.

According to Viskovic, as soon as the construction workers found archaeological layers, they stopped working, and the excavation began in the beginning of November. Hvar Town itself did not have a licence to carry out such an excavation, so the company NEIR was brought in from Split. A small team of Viskovic, fellow archaeologist Nebojsa Cingeli and Porin Kukoc from NEIR was formed, and they were assisted by well-known archaeologist Miroslav Katic, who had conducted smaller excavations on the site in 1994 and 1996.

The initial excavation lasted a month amid challenging conditions in mud and water, and the preliminary results, which have yet to be examined in greater details, have revealed three major layers of Hvar’s past.

Of these, the oldest dates back to the late first and early second centuries, where a big room and some period pottery was found. Viskovic describes this as a ‘sensational’ discovery and one that he hopes will lead to greater discoveries in future excavations.

The second layer is dated between the fourth and seventh centuries and comprises lots of pottery and lots of rooms, which point to some serious settlement during this period.

The last layer relates to the Venetian Arsenal period, and the small team uncovered some walls, pottery, cannon balls of small calibre, as well as seven big balls some 50 cm in diameter. These big balls were probably ammunition for siege weaponry or ammunition for big cannons, known to exist in the later Middle Ages.

The excavation is due to continue in the new year. Once completed, the findings will be analysed and a detailed conclusion presented.

The discoveries come at a poignant time, as Croatia looks to develop its shoulder tourism seasons by diversifying its attractions away from the stereotypical sun and beach offer of its stunning coast and islands, and the country’s rich heritage is a focal point in a new initiative from the national tourist board called Croatia 365. The Roman heritage of Central Dalmatia was also given a further tourism boost earlier this month with the opening of the first stretch of Roman roads for tourists.
