August, 7 – 11.

The story of Miljenko and Dobrila is settled in the second half of the 17th century in Kaštel Lukšić where two noble families the Vitturis and Rušinićs lived in their romantic castles. Little Miljenko (Rušinić) and Dobrila (Vitturi) were friends and eventually fell in love.

miljenko-i-dobrila-1

In the meantime, their parents had a terrible fued and decided not to allow their future companionship or marriage. Miljenko and Dobrila eloped and after a sequence of entanglements that only love can produce, their parents gave consent to their marriage in Kaštel Lukšić.

The lovers from Kaštela accepted their parents’ will. However, Dobrila’s father, count Radoslav couldn’t actually accept the fact that Miljenko had won and that he was going to take Dobrila as his wife to their new home – a castle of the noble family Rušinić.

DCIM100MEDIADJI_0194.JPG

Engulfed by uncontrollable hatred and vengeance, a night after the wedding of two young lovers in summer of 1690, count Radoslav killed his son-in-law with a firelock in front of his castle in Kaštel Lukšić.

IMG_5794 1a

A few months after the grievous event, out of tremendous sadness, Dobrila lost her mind, got sick and died. Her last wish was to be burried next to Miljenko at Rušinac, in St. John’s chapel from the 16th century.

Their tombstone can still be seen in this church, with the inscription: “Lovers, rest in peace”. In Kaštel Lukšić, besides their grave, there still stand the authentic castles of Dobrila (the Vitturi castle, 15th – 16th century) and Miljenko (the Rušinić castle, 15th century) as well as the old church dating from 1530 where the lovers got married.

This legend inspired the authors of a novel, a drama and even an opera.

The opening ceremony of this year’s manifestation The legend of Miljenko and Dobrila will take place in front of the Vitturi castle on 7th August at 21:00. A sequence of cultural events inspired with the theme of Miljenko and Dobrila will follow up to 11th August 2016.

Active vacation enthusiasts, adrenaline enthusiasts, sailors, couples and hopeless romantics, those in love with nature and in search for silence, those who prefer island products and all of you in search of a perfect destination, come to Pašman

19643614430_26310fbf2f_k_1

There are at least 7 reasons you should come to Pašman, an island in Zadar archipelago, connected to Ugljan by a bridge in Ždrelac strait, and divided from land by Pašman channel, on some parts only 2 km wide and, according to research, one of the cleanest channels in the Adriatic. This is the first reason for visiting this island.

Pasman 000075_1

  1. The cleanest channel in the Adriatic

An epithet of the cleanest Pašman channel can thank to strong current that alters every 6 hours. On one side very close to the land, on the other side with a view of Kornati, Pašman has become favourite nautical destination in fast few years. Its underwater is rich with flora and fauna, and its history left a valuable heritage of sunken Roman town and ships that used to trade in te Adriatic, so it is loved by divers as well.

2GALEŠNJAK_1

2.The heart of the world

In the middle of Pašman channel, alongside three islets called by the locals Bisage, stands completely surreal mystique Galešnjak, one of only three heart-shaped islands in the world, but the only one which doesn’t change its shape. Hopeless romantics and couples in search for an ideal wedding destination will chose exactly this island that symbolises happiness and love.

Pasman-Neviđane25_1

3. The greenest Dalmatian island

In fragrant Mediterranean vegetation you will sense scents of lavender, rosemary or wild sage. Mediterranean climate developed rich world of flora and fauna, rich vegetation of therapeutic and  aromatic herbs, while tradition of olive oil growing is evident from island’s olive groves.

IMG_2274_1

4.Robinson tourism

All those who enjoy privacy will fall in love with Pašman. They will be delighted by the south side of the island, perfect for meditative relationship with nature. Stones, rocks, untamed nature, hidden beaches, a view of islands and the open sea, a walk along macadam roads, a feeling of being alone with nature…Sounds fairytale-like? Pašman is exactly that.

5.Products of the island

Tradicija ekološke proizvodnje na Pašmanu se prenosi generacijama. Vrhunska maslinova ulja, najfinije delicije, zdravi med, prirodna kozmetika, mirisni sapuni, marinirana riba, marmelade i džemovi, dalmatinska „kvasina“, zavest će ljubitelje ekoloških i prirodnih proizvoda. Ovo je otok s najviše proizvođača „Hrvatskog otočnog proizvoda“. Njih tridesetak nositelji su ove respektabilne oznake.

6. A treasury of culture

Chapels and churches, parish churches and monasteries are witnesses of deep commitment to religion of people from the island. Almost entire sacral heritage was built in medieval times, although only some of them kept their medieval appearance. Make sure you visit Franciscan monastery of St. Duje  in Kraj and Benedictine monastery of St. Kuzma and Damjan on Ćokovac hill, and locality on Otus, where medieval summer residence used to be.

7. Active vacation with a dose of adrenaline

You long for action, take care of your health, you are professional or amateur athlete? Pašman is your destination. Explore it by bike along and across and you won’t regret it. No matter which road you take, you will enjoy in olive groves, vast dry walls, hidden bays, caves and cracks, archaeological remains, houses and churches. Adrenaline addicts gather every year on ‘’Škraping’’, unique international trekking race on harsh island’s rocks. Specific check points, placed next to greatest Pašman’s attractions by which every participant has to pass, give this race a tourist note.

zdrelac_1

Increasingly popular cyclotourist trend has seized Pašman too!

As a consequence, already in preseason (this year on May 21) mountaineering cycling marathon ”BAJPAS” is held here. Marathon goes through places Pašman, Mrljane, Neviđane, Dobropoljanu, Banj and Ždrelac, and on return it includes Kraj as well, thus giving an opportunity to really get familiar with this picturesque landscape. From Ston Walls and Ston Salt Works , picturesque Janjina and Trpanj founded on ancient Gradina to Orebić, a city of sailors and captains, Pelješac is a destination of exquisite wines, active vacation and beautiful beaches

From place to place, along wavy Pelješac road, you will meet this peninsula’s unique lifestyle, based on blessings of nature. Pelješac people live in harmony with hundred years old tradition of maintaining and cherishing olive groves and wine yards, some of which arose on hardly accessible place, thus testifying of the effort and persistence of these people.

DSC08842

Here, harsh Dalmatian karst gave some of the mightiest plavac varieties. This variety gives the best results on Pelješac, so it is not surprising that it makes 90 percent of total Pelješac wine yard,  which is one of the biggest in Croatia.

bartolomija 09 mj 2010 459

Due to sun reflection from the sea and rocks, excellent conditions are made for accumulation of sugar in grape, especially on famous Pelješac positions Dingač and Postup, Ponikve and Milij,  which create beautiful landscape by descending towards the sea.

Andrea Šain (76)

Even though, while visiting Pelješac wineries, the owners might seem somewhat secretive karst and wine grape enthusiasts, some of them are famous names that made Croatian and Dalmatian wines world famous.

The best way to get familiar with this peninsula is to take a thematic road ”Pelješac-wine empire” or Napoleon road 61 km long, which goes through entire Pelješac and is an integral part of roads for active  tourism.

STON – A story of salt and oysters

If you are arriving to Pelješac by land, medieval Ston is the first place on the peninsula that you can’t miss. You will be impressed by its 5,5 km long stone walls, the longest in Europe.

STON GRAD 13. 07. 2005

Solana je i danas aktivna, kroz stoljeća nije mijenjala izgled ni način proizvodnje.

They were built by Dubrovnik Republic in 14th century to protect highly valuable salt works, the oldest in Europe, and some say even in the world. The salt work is active even today, preserving its appearance and production ways through centuries.

Janjina – Little Paris

By following the road from Ston, across Ponikve and Putnikovići, you will arrive to Janjina in the centre of the peninsula, which used to be called Little Paris, due to its cultural and economic significance. With central place Janjina with Zabrežje village, the municipality encompasses Popova luka and coastal places Drače, Sreser and Osobjava with beautiful beaches.

You will enjoy in excellent dishes based on seasonal ingredients and fresh caught fish, together with unavoidable strong plavac wine varieties of several famous local producers. You will be enchanted by Dalmatian hospitable atmosphere, and if you go on a tour of Janjina along its stone-paved streets, do not miss former Knežev dvor (Rector’s Palace), gothic church of St. Vlaho  and church of St. Stjepan on Janjina graveyard, which is considered to exist since Roman times.

This summer as well many manifestations are organized for Pelješac people and their guests, so you can feel tastes and scents of the peninsula on fishermen’s nights in Drače and Sreser, but also on events in Drače: Pelješka trpeza (Pelješac’s table) on June 26 and Wine Night on August 8. Drače is also  famous for feast of St. Roko on August 18, while in Sreser there is festivity of Assumption of Mary on August 15.

Orebić – A place of sailors

From the viewing point of church of Our Lady of Angels in Orebić, one of the most attractive tourist places on the Adriatic, a beautiful view spreads. There almost isn’t a house where at least one family member wasn’t a sailor, while Museum of votive photographs of sailors and their families, captain’s grave yard and the Maritime Museum testify of great nautical tradition of this place.

IMG_9844

Above Orebić, St. Ilija’s peak stands, to which lead 3 routes of mountaneering roads, while neighbouring Kučišta and Viganj are famous destinations of professional and recreational surfers and kiters. Every May In Viganj state championship in windsurfing Viganj Slalom Open is held, while summer season in Orebić began at the end of May by promoting diving and ecology action Poged u plavo (View into the Blue).

Trpanj – For active vacation enthusiasts

Opposite of Orebić, on the other side of the peninsula Trpanj is situated, which you can reach in two ways – by driving along a road through picturesque Pelješac landscape or by ferry from Ploče. Active vacation enthusiasts will fall in love  with this place which is one of the oldest on Pelješac. Founded on ancient Gradina with  a unique viewpoint, you can sightsee Trpanj on one of cycling roads, and you will equally enjoy in one of four mountaineering roads – Viter, Lozica, Paškalov put and Miloševica or along thematic roads like Roads of Therapeutic Herbs and Roads of Olive Oil.

You will be relaxed by a walk by the sea that starts on Trpanj waterfront, goes along the coast, bays and bathing spots, and ends above Blace bay, known for therapeutic mud. EXCELLENT TIMING. Stari Gard celebrates its  2400th birthday! And that its time has come in tourist sense as well is shown by recent trends on world market, where authentic Mediterranean places are highly rated  (for example, Italian Liguria and picturesque Cinque Terre have very fast become extremely popular worldwide due to social networks)!

stari-grad-hektorovic_1

Synchronizing current trends, rich history and genuine ambience whose preserved heritage goes back to even ancient times, are great attributes  of tourist attractively of Stari Grad. Is there a better moment to visit it but on its impressive 2400th anniversary, accompanied by many cultural, sports and entertaining events?

stari-grad-2_1

MAGNIFICENT JUBILANT YEAR. Although the entire 2016 is dedicated to this anniversary, central celebration will be held from September 7-11. An abundance of events have been planned, like festival of the sea and sailors Dani u vali (Days in Bay), anniversary symposium, lectures, workshops and gastronomic manifestations (do not miss presentation of Stari Grad restaurants NA BON PRO on June 13!), concerts and exhibitions – from ancient bread to painting crafts.

_dsf9203_1

May and June in Stari Grad will be marked by sport and music – more precisely, by cycling and klapa song! On May 28 festival of island singers Večer od Kantonjo was held, and as Croatian Brass Band Stari Grad is celebrating 140th anniversary this year, they have prepared series of concerts with surprise guests, which will be held during the entire summer!

poluotok-kabal_1

We would gladly visit Stari Grad on June 25th when klapa Cambi performs on Škor square, and concert of Gustafi will also be fun. They will perform at the party upon finishing cycling race Biciklom kroz baštinu (Cycling through heritage) (June 11 and 12). If you are a cycling enthusiast, and you would gladly be a part of the race, you should take this title literally – namely, the race goes through Stari Grad field, which has been under protection of UNESCO since 2008.

starogradsko-polje_1

Together with all mentioned events, many famous names will jollify Stari Grad this summer – from hosts, Faroski Kantaduri and chakavian poets from the island, to cellist Ana Rucner (August 8), Matija Dedić & Tedi Spalato (August 12), Crvena jabuka (August 13), Big Band Makarska & Marko Tolja (August 23).

Veliki Tabor is one of the most beautiful fortresses in northwesten Croatia, in Croatian Zagorje near Desinić. This building located at the altitude of 334m is a zero-category monument. Its name originates from the word tabor which denotes a war camp. It was built for defense from the Turks. Veliki Tabor is one of the best preserved medieval and Renaissance fortified towns of continental Croatia. The castle was built in the second half of the 15th century. It was built by the noble family Rattkay during the 16th century and remained in their possession until 1793. It had many famous masters: the Counts of Celje (who owned it at the earliest), Matija and Ivaniš Korvin, the Rattkay family, and the family of famous Croatian artist Oton Iveković. At the beginning of 90s of the 20th century, it is included among the Museums of Croatian Zagorje and operated as museum and excursion site.
