"Servus My Fair Zagreb" – Storytelling your way through Croatia's capital

Do you believe in magic? If you come to Zagreb, you will see that we do. The old name of our city – Agram - says it all.

Wherever you go, there is a gram of Zagreb's most beautiful stories waiting for you. So, let us take you for a "špancirancija" with your local storyteller - Purgerica ("lady from Zagreb"), a licenced tourist guide in our capital.

Now, what is a "špancirancija"? It is a sort of an old Zagreb slang word, derived from German, and it means a promenade-style, galant walk. And when we say galant, we mean Zagreb-in-the-Orient-Express-era-galant. Imagine this – the year is 1929, you have just stepped down from your train at Zagreb's Central Rail Station, the first thing you see is a gorgeous green park, with neo-classic palaces embracing it, a fountain humming in its centre, and a golden-yellow Art Padillion at the top of the park, waiting for your visit.

First old cars are slowly driving by, a man in a top hat is offering you a carriage ride. But no, you must go – you have arranged to meet your friends at the decadent art-deco hotel, built for the guests of the Orient Express. As you enjoy on its terrace, shaded by unusual red-flowered chestnut trees, gossip stories come to your ears. The famous Josephine Baker is in Zagreb. Welcome to "Servus My Fair Zagreb", a themed walking tour, inspired by Zagreb's crazy, jazzy, decadent 1920s and 30s!

In Zagreb, it is always a good time to stop time. And then travel through it, by the magic of words, paired with the fine craft of storytelling and some of Zagreb's most famous Down Town sites. Let Purgerica tell you how time stopped at the very end of the 19th century, when the Grand Earthquake hit our capital, and forever changed its image, to a Viennese-like city, which will simply steal your heart with its hidden old-school charm. This tour will take you from the Grand Central Station, along Zagreb's most famous park – Zrinjevac, which turned from a muddy farmers market into the most wanted zone for to "see, and to be seen".

The mix of historical facts, interesting details from the lives of old Zagrebians, gossip and legends, will tell you how we built the first cafeteria and hotel, why does coffee in modern-day Zagreb have to last at least one hour, where did we enjoy Sunday matinee concerts on the open, dressed up elegantly for the occasion, and what kind of a huge scandal was brought on by a "mushroom" which was waisting too much water. Did you write something with a pen today? Great.

Purgerica will take you to see where  Slavoljub Penkala, the famous inventor of the
first mechanical pencil, lived and what exactly did he eat for breakfast every
single morning at 10 am. Following the rails of the old-horse tram, you might
hear about the elegant, first-ever department store in Zagreb, taste some
authentic, vintage candy, wrapped in red velvet, and hopelessly fall in love
with Zagreb's Green Horseshoe, as it once was.

If we sparked interest and you
would like to take the "Servus My Fair Zagreb" tour, visit Purgerica's  Facebook and Instagram page
or contact her via email [email protected] or
via text, Whatsapp, Viber or call the number: +385 91 6363 661.

Welcome to the city with a storytelling spirit!

Imotski - Discover the empire of lakes in the Dalmatian hinterland!

You've probably heard about the famous Imotski lakes - the red one and the blue one, which will be listed on the UNESCO Geoparks list in 2020. But did you know that this area is generally full of lakes, which don’t have roads leading to them, but are great locations for active holidays, hiking and sightseeing?

Blue Lake

And best of all, they are surrounded by many sinkholes, hillforts, dry lakes, hills, cascading vineyards and archeological sites - in other words, a lot of content for nature lovers and historical heritage! Therefore, why not explore the magical world of the Dalmatian hinterland? If you are looking for a great idea for an interesting trip, let our text serve as an inspiration for you!

Blue Lake

Frenchman Frederic Swierczynski reached the bottom of one lake back in 2017 and provided Imotski locals with a historic moment - with a dive right down to the bottom of the mysterious Red Lake at a depth of 245 metres!

Image result for tz imotski
Red Lake

This venture was not at all without considerable danger, due to a number of significant factors - first of all, to reach a dive position, it requires considerable mountaineering skills and involves a number of potential dangers - among other things, gases which we don’t know the behaviour of at certain depths.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BicFKSwuw38

But the adrenaline lover from Jacques Cousteau's home country didn't want to give up - with the heartfelt help (and the thunderous applause!) of locals, a diving club and mountaineering company who also did a lion's share of the work, he solved the mystery which was thousands of years old - we now know much more about the underwater world of this karst phenomenon, about the organisms living at great depths, sponges, sediment, water...

Image result for imotski modro jezero

By the way, the Red Lake is named after the colour of the steep cliffs that surround it, and the people around it are the subject of many legends, especially the one about Gavan’s castle (inquire about it with the hospitable locals!). The mysterious character of the Red Lake is also compounded by the fact that you simply can’t throw a pebble into it - give it a try and let us know if you succeeded!

Image result for modro jezero

The Imotski Tourist Board has posted a four-minute-long promotional video on their YouTube channel, showing the amazing beauty of Imotski’s lakes. In addition to the Imotski Tourist Board, the video is also promoted by the Croatian National Tourist Board and the Split - Dalmatia County Tourist Board, the promotional video will also be featured at several European tourist film festivals.

Blue Lake

The lakes are as if they have been divided - while the Red Lake is dark and inaccessible, and most admire it from afar, except for a few true lovers who have decided to tackle it (Frederic claims to have dived into many waters around the world, but the Red Lake completely fascinated him!), the Blue Lake is more ‘’gentle’’ and is also accessible for swimming.

Image result for GALIPOVAC
Galipovac

Treat yourself to a great break from the classic sea and beach
package and bathe in this lake of a truly magical colour, and if you find
yourself in Imotski when it dries up, play football with the locals at its very
bottom!

Lesser known, but no less beautiful are Lokvičićko Lake (or
Mamić Lake), Knezović Lake and Galipovac.

Image result for MAMIĆA JEZERO
Mamić lake

Together with the Imotski field (Imotsko polje) and the opposite Prološko lake, this trefoil of lakes makes a unique whole. In addition to the most famous and largest of them all, Galipovac, there are vistas and landing sites, while Mamić and Knezović are lakes, although they are much smaller in terms of their surface area, their inaccessibility and surrounding environment are similar to that of the Red Lake.

Image result for imotski zeleno jezero
Green lake

And the real star among the less developed lakes of the Imotski
area is the Green Lake - because of its beautiful, icy turquoise green, it has
attracted foreign filmmakers as well as numerous guests who agree on one thing:
‘’This is not a trendy trip, but it is worth the effort.’’

‘’A great environment and hiking opportunities!’’.

If you want to find out what the magic is all about, get the
team together and head over to Imotski this weekend!

Birdwatching in Cetina Region – a true treat!

The area of Cetina Region is of unique natural beauty, known for its beautiful mountain landscapes, meadows, lush vegetation and amazing water springs.

Although relatively small in
size, it is characterized by exceptional geographic diversity, making it an
attractive area for bird populations.

Birdwatching involves observing
and studying birds with the naked eye or with the help of optical aids such as
binoculars, telescopes and photographic equipment.

Birds can be found everywhere around us and are often the largest group of animals which a citizen can come across. From the initial assumption, that only a few bird species, such as pigeons, sparrows and blackbirds, actually live in the city, observation can easily lead you to a conclusion that birdlife of mountain species is significantly more varied.

In the Cetina Region, there is a growing popularity of birdwatching (or birding), and it trully has great potentials thanks to the rich bird fauna that inhabits this area. More and more often, foreign travel agencies bring tourists birdwatchers to Croatia to show them the distinctive natural heritage of this beautiful region.

Pavića nebesa – Sinj's favorite promenade

Since Pavića nebesa (in Croatian:
Pavić's Skies) is one of the favorite promenades among the locals of Sinj, the
Tourist Board of Sinj, supported by the Tourist Board of the Split-Dalmatia
County, has given it a special touch by setting a bird watchtower, benches,
kennels.

Nicely redecorated, Pavića nebesa promenade will serve as a natural attraction for tourists visiting the Cetina Region, through the evermore popular hiking, as well as bridwatching – observing birds in the forests, as their natural habitats.

Only half-an-hour-away from the center of the town, Pavića nebesa is a place for educating children about the importance of preserving nature as well as its biodiversity, and a place where birdwatchers, in its peace and silence, can observe numerous species such as wood pigeons, orioles or woodcocks, and listen to the silent roars of larks, forest owls or love calls of blackbirds.

The best time for this form of tourism? Spring!

Birdwatching takes place
primarily in spring, during the nesting season of most bird species. The most
favorable months are May and June when all the nesting birds are present. It's
the period when the birds are most active due to their singing, wooing,
coupling and territorial flights. The fact that birdwatching travel activities
take place in the pre-season, increases the utilization of existing local
capacities which are fully sold out in summer, during July and August. In this
way, birdwatching tourism contributes to the lenghtening of the tourist season,
which is in line with the Croatian tourism strategy.

The wider area around Sinj includes two vegetation zones: the Submediterranean area of deciduous vegetation and the mountainous zone. The highest parts of Svilaja and Dinara mountains belong to the mountainous zone, while the rest is included in the Submediterranean area of deciduous vegetation.

A true treasure is hidden in the
rich flora and fauna that nature has generously spread all over the Cetina Region.

In almost surreal landscapes,
boosted by clean air and inspired by the karst subterranean labyrinths of River
Cetina, numerous plant species grow. In addition to the rich flora, the Cetina
Region is abundant with numerous animal species.

A diverse plant layer, bushes, pits and rocks provide perfect nesting places to numerous species of birds. On the cliffs of the canyon you can find nests of mountain pasture birds. Look into the thick canyon forest, in the habitat of black woodpeckers. On the rocky plateau of the protected belt, in the tall grass, you will come across the nests of crown larks and rock partridges. Take your binoculars and sit back comfortably, looking towards the tall pine trees, where you will be able to spot nests of buzzards and hawks.

The Significant Landscape of Sutina was protected in 2000, on an area of 426.80 hectares, and it covers the upper canyon of Sutina stream, Cetina's tributary. The canyon of mountain stream Sutina, with its unusual setting of the plant layer, is a typical example of botanical inversion.

The dense forests of the canyon are the habitat of black woodpeckers. On the rocky plateau of the protected belt, deep in the grass, you will be able to find nests of crown larks and rock partridges. On tall pine trees, there are the nests of buzzards and hawks. At the exit from the canyon, where erosive effects are strong and sandy slopes are formed, you will find canals of bee eaters, in which this species raises its young ones.

The Significant landscape Rumin includes Mali and Veliki Rumin, on a surface of 33.5 hectares, and its status was confirmed in year 2000. Mali and Veliki Rumin represent the core part of Rumina, the second largest of Cetina's tributaries.

While in the summer Mali Rumin runs dry, Veliki Rumin, which runs under the gorge called Greda, never goes dry. The steep cliffs of Rumin are home to bird species such as ravens, kestrels and beaufitul long eared owls. On the karsty slopes at the foot of the cliffs, you can find nests of northern wheatears and rock partridges, and in the lowlands, on the fields and ploughed lands, you will encounter grey partridges, quails and crested larks.

Along the foothills of Rumin, the
long-tailed tit creates its ball-shaped nests,
and on the oak branches, the basket-like nests of orioles hang. On the
old oak trees, a large woodpecker is also easily found, while the wild ducks
come to sip on the waters of Rumin.

Nutjak near Trilj

Nutjak Fortress was built downstream from Trilj, at the edge of the lower rocky plateau rising high above the right bank of Cetina River. Just a simple look at this unusual fortress, located on the very edge of the cliff, causes a series of emotions - from awe to admiration.

Kamičak - Protected cultural heritage

One of the most important symbols of Sinj is Kamičak Fortres,  located in the center of the town, opposite the Church of the Miraculous Lady of Sinj. Kamičak, a protected cultural heritage, together  with the military horse baracks, is connected with today's Alkarski Dvori (The Alkari Palace).

It was given its present appearance in 1980 when it was additionally surrounded by walls and afforested with pines. On the top of the fort, there is a bell with the inscription – Our Lord, set us free from thunder and evil times - which probably derives from the belief that the sound of the bells or the shooting from old "mužar" canons scares away the clouds and the thunder.

Topana – Favorite panoramic point

Situated on the cliffs above Modro Jezero (Lake) is the Topana Fortress, one of the most important medieval fortification facilities in Dalmatian hinterland. It is interesting that the fortress was named after a special tower with a cannon platform, known in the local language as "topana".

The most beautiful cycling routes in Dalmatian Zagora!

YES, SINJ AND CETINA REGION ARE THE LOCAL RELIGIOUS, CULTURAL AND GASTRO BRAND, and that is known to whoever attended the famous knight game Alka, the celebration of Our Lady of the Rosary in Vrlika, the feast of St Michael in Trilj, or whoever sat down to have lunch with our incredibly friendly hosts (do not even try to refuse the local  "arambaša“ and "uštipci" from Vrlika).

But, what you perhaps did not know is that this heroic, passion-hearted town and its surroundings, in early and mid-August, are often too small to receive all the travelers and wanderers, who want to experience its active side. Besides being a well-known zone for its carefully nurtured and developed religious and cultural identity, this very zone is becoming very interesting as a destination for active holidays.

If we caught your attention and you are also a two-wheeled adventure fan – keep on reading!

Dinara_Biking_1

THEY HAVE AN ACE UP THEIR SLEEVE. ALWAYS.  It won't be hard to understand that Sinj holds the ace, at the very first glance of the ambience which will be the background of your favorite activity. Lush flora and fauna, pastoral landscapes with an authentic dash of traditions and intriguing cultural and historical remains are what you can expect if you enter a cyclotouristic adventure in the city and its hinterland.

If you are a fan of the outdoors, we suggest the modernly equipped, equestrian-cycling trail Cetina - Sinj (454), which eastern tip follows the peaceful river Cetina from Han to the equestrian club Saint Mihovil in Trilj, and the western tip leads right through the middle of Sinj Field. On the other hand, if you are looking for an authentic piece of history, opt for a 25-kilometers-long cycling trail Aequum (452), or the 35-kilometers-long Hawk's Trail (453). The first runs through the ancient bridges on Cetina, Turkish roads to old mills with gigantic stone boulders, and follows the outlines of the ancient Roman colony Čitluk, while the other one starts from the two-centuries-old bridge on Gorućica, and takes you towards the beautiful green oasis near the town.

For fans of beautiful landscapes, without much thought, we would recommend the Five Sources Route (454) and the delight of fresh, cold and clear side creeks of Cetina – Rumin, Kosinac, Ovrlja, Rude and Graba, as well as the trail Around Visoka (455), for which experts say it offers the best edition of the scenery in this part of Dalmatian hinterland. Anyone who dared to get to know it better, agrees with us in one thing - when it comes to cycling, Sinj really does have an ace up its sleeve!

TRILJ AND VRLIKA -  OASIS OF TRADITION. BUT ALSO OF SPORTS AND ADRENALINE. If you enjoy observing flora and fauna, as well as old traditional mills set in pure, untouched nature (some of which are still in function today!), your ideal cycling trails are located at about 11 km away from Trilj. Route 502 Mlinice will give you the best insight into these unique sets of traditional architecture.

Biciklizam - Trilj

We are particularly impressed by the Samardžić Mill on the river Grab, which, just like the Ćosić Mill, on the right bank of this river, represents an extremely valuable rural complex.  The oldest one, Uršić Mill, is located at one of its sources, and is a unique example of a mill adjustable to the height of water level, by using the mechanism of the mill wheel!

Biciklizam - Trilj

Other trails offer fascinating examples of old picturesque churches, traditional gravestones stećci with figurative depictions of warriors and horses, and the culture-lovers among cyclers will be specially excited about the trails 505 Brodarić and 507 Gaj Laberije. While the first, near Košuta and Brodarić settlements, passes by the Museum of Trilja rea, containing an extremely valuable ethnographic, archaeological and cultural-historical collection, the other boasts an abundance of interesting features: Tilurium, a Roman military camp with military dormitories, a cistern, remains of mosaics, the statue of Gaj Liberije and the bastion, followed by St Peter's church at the very top of the Gardun site, also including a unique view of the town of Trilj and its surroundings.

Biciklizam - Trilj

If you are in a great cycling shape, do not miss the 36 kilometers-distant Vrlika! You may have heard about it thanks to the best traditional uštipci and the famous opera Ero s onoga svijeta, which has carried out the name of this region around the globe, but actually, this zone is an undiscovered realm for active holidays, that helps you get in touch with your wild side!

DalmatiaExplorer MTB01a

The cycling trails in Vrlika, named Cetina, Peruča and Golo brdo, connect by theme with all the important attractions in the area, and they offer the best of both worlds - a peaceful ride through the pleasant macadamas as well as the challenges of mountain biking along Dinara! The picturesque churches, archaeological excavations and mills, the emerald-blue source of Cetina River, the green Vrlika Field and the hidden pearl of Sinj hinterland - Peručko Lake, are part of the scenery for your unique, tailor made, cycling adventure.

Exhibition of Roman roads of Central Dalmatia in Archaeological Museum in Zagreb!

Old ancient roads of Central Dalmatia hide remains of old-Christian necropolis, Roman camps, sacral buildings and numerous remains of fortification facilities

One doesn’t need to travel to Rome to see Roman roads – this is proven by restored Roman roads of Central Dalmatia – for tourist purpose. All those interested in history, archaeology or those who are simply of curious nature and want to know how it all looked like in ancient and Roman times, when soldiers of Roman legions, but ordinary travellers as well, passed through this area where we are today, should visit remains of Roman roads in Split-Dalmatia County.

Rimske ceste

To save all this from oblivion, in 2012 Joška Stella, director of Tourist Board of Split-Dalmatia County and Lino Ursić, county’s external associate, especially on projects of archaeological tourism, started a project named Roman roads of Central Dalmatia. The project has spread outside the borders of the County and set out to Zagreb, where the exhibition will be held on April 6 in Archaeological Museum. This way our capital’s residents and tourists will have the opportunity to get familiar with this significant part of Dalmatian, but Croatian history as well.

A trip back in time starts in Salona, which is together with Diocletian’s palace one of  ancient jewels of this area. Preserved remains of Roman roads are located throughout Split hinterland, like military road Salona– Klis-Andetrium – today’s Gornji Muć and road of new conquests and borders Salona – Klis, Dugopolje – Dicmo – Aequum (Čitluk) and Servitium – a place where First Pannonian Fleet had its quarters, presumably on the Sava River.

At the visitors' disposal there is a number of ways to take a tour of the Park: tourist boats, small boats, canoes, bicycles and by foot. In these cold winter days there is also a heated tourist train, all with a professional guide who will introduce visitors in best possible way, to the natural resources of the Park. Regular rides are on weekdays at 11 am, and at 11.00h and 14.00h on weekends (there is also a possibility of scheduling appointments for groups).

Price of a train tour is kn 40,00 for all visitors, and reservations can be made every day from 8:00 to 16:00 pm on the phone number 031/445 445.

The program also includes the contents of the admission center Kopačevo: video presentation, a visit to multimedia exhibition and the walking tour of the wooden walkway.

On our lakes and channels one can frequently see some swans, apparently unbothered by the winter.

The symbol of the Park - white-tailed eagle - resides in the Rit during the whole year and can be seen sitting on high, dry branches in search of prey. At the ponds one can see flocks of beautiful coots, and on the branches and roots along the channels a vividly coloured bird – kingfisher – can be noticed.

When it snows and the frost covers willow tree branches and other vegetation, Kopački rit becomes a true fairytale scenery worth experiencing, not to mention relaxing walks over wooden bridges.

Satisfaction of the visitors is best shown by the fact that last year the Park was visited by more visitors than ever before with a great rate of growth. We hope that more and more people will get to know and love Kopački rit in the future!

Bol's cycling roads - Poker of Queens!

MEDITERRANEAN HEAVEN FOR CYCLOTOURISTS- we know it as one of the most beautiful and most successful destinations, where even in late summer beaches are packed - it is our tourist champion Bol. Now it has got a new dose of tourist attraction – great cycling roads!

12990895_10154046077026000_2948772937729299211_n

These roads, named after characteristic Mediterranean therapeutic herbs, are real poker of queens, so we had to ensure them a title of main stars of our text. Which other trump Bol keeps up its sleeve – especially form tennis world, you will find out in the following lines!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

ROADS WHOSE NAME SAYS IT ALL. While riding along Kadulja (Sage) road you can clearly smell this miraculous therapeutic plant. Therefore, this road is perfect for all those who want to feel the nature; and with its 55 km and 1400 m of ascent, it also presents a real challenge! It starts in Bol and ascends to Gornji Humac, rewarding its visitor all the way with a view of beautiful landscapes, autochthonous Brač’s places and small villages and hamlets.

12718031_476860012509407_6558734485955002517_n

It descends down to Selca and to the easternmost place on Brač – Sumartin, where it ascends again to Selca and Povlja, back to Bol on the same track.

A VIEW THAT REACHES ITALY will be your main reward for conquering beautiful Pinija (Pine) road! This 90,4 km long road with 2160 m of ascent that goes through the most beautiful landscapes is intended for those who like long MTB rides. It starts in Bol and goes to Murvica, all by the sea. It ascends in serpentines to Obršje, turns to Dračevica and descends to Sutivan by Vela gomila, through olive groves. It reaches Supetar through Mirca place, along wide macadam only a few metres from the sea; there it turns back to Mirca, but this time it turns south and ascends through Olive roads to Donji Humac. Through Nerežišća it goes up to Brač’s highest point – Vidova Gora where you can enjoy in beautiful view of Hvar, Šolta, Vis…all the way to Italy! It goes back to starting point in Bol along the coast, through Murvica and by Golden Cape beach.

11215718_618877558261369_3385159729829268999_n

You will ride ALONG THE ROADS OF BRAČ’S WINEMKERS if you dare to take Plavac Mali road! Combined, hilly, circular, 44 km long road starts from centre of Bol along the waking path and across Golden Cape beach, further to Murvica. It continues to west through vineyards of Plavac Mali to V.Farska. Then serpentines begin, leading to deserted hamlet Obršje. The road then turns east through pine wood and, just like Pinija road, it takes you to Vidova Gora peak with a beautiful viewpoint. Across  Vidova Gora plateau it leads to airport and descends down the state road back to Bol, where it ends.

bol-fr-samostan-ii-lis-06_1

Ružmarin (Rosemary) road is 19,8 km long with few ascends. It goes east form Bol centre to Dominican Monastery, and then you will ride on macadam to east, through olive groves and wine yards to the very end of the road. There is a U-turn that leads back to Bol, along the old roads in Murivca direction, and back along the walking path to Bol centre.

ELEGANT SPORT IN ELEGANT AMBIENCE. Bol strives to elegance in everything (just think of its visual identity and Golden Cape beach  which is one of the most memorable symbols of national tourism!) so it is not surprising that white sport – tennis, returned there! WTA 125K tournament will hopefully return Bol its former glory as one of the most attractive tennis destinations, and next year it will be held from 4 to 11 June. With young tennis hopes and abundance of additional activities like attractive hotel accommodation and numerous opportunities for enjoying in sun and the sea in peak season, Bol has all the chances to become Croatian Saint-Tropez!

12718006_618874841594974_7274552735199339395_n

sp2_5433_1

A CENTURY LONG WINE TRADITION. At the very centre of Bol winery Stina is located. It dates back to 1903, when winery collective was established to serve the needs of Bol residents. It is known as one of the most modernly equipped wine cellars in Croatia! If you are a wine enthusiast we recommend tasting new wine  - Stina – made of authentic wine varieties – Pošip, Vugava (white wines) and Plavac Mali (red wine)!

BOL IS EQUALLY LIKED BY ALL. When Mrs Valentina Palajsa, an accountant from Karlovac Technical School, booked her accommodation in Elaphusa hotel, she didn’t even dream of being awarded as 100 000th visitor! With record-breaking 100 000 visitors in only one season, Bol really outdid itself. In October this was celebrated and special recognition awards were given – to mark the best season ever. Guest structure was also interesting – Germany, Scandinavian countries and France accounted for 83 000  - 86 000 overnight stays, followed by Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and Great Britain! Therefore, we can conclude that this is universally likeable destination and what other to wish but -to keep up with good tourist achievements!
