Equestrian tourism in Dalmatian Zagora

Former rocky and rugged region with recognizable highlander style is becoming known as one of extremely attractive tourist parts of central Dalmatia. Of course, it is Dalmatian Zagora. Apart from developing theme roads, cyclotourism, eco-ethno villages, recently in places of Dalmatian Zagora, equestrian tourism has been developing.  Namely, Sinj town and Cetina region have bred and trained horses since olden times. The proof is world-famous Sinj Alka which has been held for over three centuries. Apart from this, Sinj is a host to many national and international gallop and steeplechase tournaments.  Equestrian tourism is becoming strong in Trilj and Vrlika as well, while in Dugopolje sports tourism in form of marathon and football tournaments is being developed.

Sinj

Development of equestrian sport is linked to year 1979, when Sinj’s hippodrome was opened, for equestrian sports tournament. This is the second largest hippodrome in Croatia, right after the one in Zagreb.

Equestrian club Alkar was founded in 1968, and from this club a series of top riders and state representatives in horse-riding have emerged. There are several smaller private stables on Sinj area, where some of the finest and most awarded horses are bred. On wider Sinj area there are four equestrian clubs – already mentioned Alkar, Alamo, Mustang and St. Mihovil. Each of them, apart from horse-riding school, offers services of therapeutic riding for disabled and mentally challenged persons. Special roads for development of equestrian tourism are also being arranged.

For Adrenaline Addicts - Rafting on Cetina river

Adventure Tourism on Cetina River

In need of an adrenaline rush? Do you like water sports and socializing with friends, including lots of laughter and good fun? Look no further - rafting on Cetina River is a real treat for you. Cetina is one of the most beautiful and longest Croatian rivers. With its 102 km-long river flow, it offers numerous opportunities for adventure sports and active tourism. Throughout history, Cetina has played an important role in the life of the local population, as evidenced by numerous archaeological findings. Nowadays, all those adrenaline craved guests can go down its rapids,  participate in rafting or just enjoy in a refreshing swim.

Image may contain: one or more people, plant, tree, outdoor, water and nature

The adventure starts in Omiš

If you want to go rafting on Cetina, you need to know that this adventure starts in Omiš, on a large parking lot, about 200 meters upstream from the Omiš Bridge or in a popular excursions spot – Radmanove mlinice. From these two locations you can take a minibus or a van to reach the embarkation point for the rubber boats called rafts. The 25-minute ride will allow you to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Cetina Canyon, after which you will arrive to the embarkation area.

Image may contain: plant, sky, outdoor, nature and water

It is important to note that everyone participating in rafting have to change into neoprene suits, which provide protection from cold water. In addition, a helmet will guard your head, and you will also get a life vest and a paddle. Each raft can carry 8 tourists and 1 experienced skipper. May the adventure begin!

Image may contain: 1 person

After a brief training during which the skipper gives the “crew” general instructions on how to roam and behave on the raft, you will be familiar with five basic rafting commands: all ahead, all back, left back, right back and all in ship or better known as "the bomb". The rafting can now start! In the first segment, the river is not so fast and the crew has enough time to practice these basic commands. After that, you will arrive to the segment of Cetina which is technically quite demanding, so you have to pay close attention to your skipper's commands. They call that part of the river " the labyrinth". When you pass through this, the raft comes to a small lake where everyone can swim and chill. It is important to note that children can do rafting too, in specially designed, smaller swimsuits and helmets. However, children must be accompanied by parents or guardians.

Image may contain: plant, tree, outdoor, nature and water

After the swim stop, there is a small dam where rafting participants can drink pure spring water, rest and eat fruit. During that time, skippers move the empty rafts across the small dam and descend to the dangerous rapid called Oblačnik. Only then do rafting participants return to the rafts. From that point, the fastest and most interesting part of the rafting adventure on Cetina begins and it lasts for a few kilometers.

Rafting requirements –  a bit of good will and skills

To keep digital proof, during your rafting adventure, a photographer with a professional digital camera takes photos of all the rafting participants, in the most interesting segments. One of the most unforgettable photos will certainly be beneath Studenci waterfalls and "Z" rapids, a place where your heart will simply have to do backflips. Following these, there will be another dozen of interesting rapids before you reach the part called "Tisna stina".

Image may contain: plant, tree, outdoor, water and nature

This is where the famous American western film "Winnetou" was shot, so you will get to feel like actors for a moment. Those more courageous among you can try their river diving skills – from the rocks. A bit more rafting and you will arrive to Radmanove mlinice. All the equipment stays on the raft and the participants will carry it out to the shore. And after a three or four-hour adventure, time has come to return to Omiš.

Image may contain: 1 person, standing, tree, shoes, shorts, child, outdoor, nature and water

You will remember the unforgettable rafting on the fizzing river, no matter if you are a skillful rafter or not. Rafting demands only a good will and just a tiny bit of skill. As sugar on top, you’ll just have to enjoy the local food prepared by the skillful chefs at the excursion point Radmanove mlinice.

Exhibition of Roman roads of Central Dalmatia in Archaeological Museum in Zagreb!

Old ancient roads of Central Dalmatia hide remains of old-Christian necropolis, Roman camps, sacral buildings and numerous remains of fortification facilities

One doesn’t need to travel to Rome to see Roman roads – this is proven by restored Roman roads of Central Dalmatia – for tourist purpose. All those interested in history, archaeology or those who are simply of curious nature and want to know how it all looked like in ancient and Roman times, when soldiers of Roman legions, but ordinary travellers as well, passed through this area where we are today, should visit remains of Roman roads in Split-Dalmatia County.

Rimske ceste

To save all this from oblivion, in 2012 Joška Stella, director of Tourist Board of Split-Dalmatia County and Lino Ursić, county’s external associate, especially on projects of archaeological tourism, started a project named Roman roads of Central Dalmatia. The project has spread outside the borders of the County and set out to Zagreb, where the exhibition will be held on April 6 in Archaeological Museum. This way our capital’s residents and tourists will have the opportunity to get familiar with this significant part of Dalmatian, but Croatian history as well.

Discover spring charm of the best small destination on the Adriatic!

This spring all those in love with walks, cycling, eno-gastronomy, and all other forms of tourism are warmly invited to a picturesque place of Bol. Former place of residence of farmers, fishermen and seamen is a real tourist mecca today, visited by many tourists even from elite world destinations.

Although Bol is especially visited in summer; in spring, when new life awakens, it will shine it its full glory. Many tourist agencies offer various routes during which you can get familiar with all the beauties and mystique of this little place. During half-day excursion, you can visit Dragon’s Cave i.e. a monument of cave monastery life from the 15th century, located above Murvica place. It is actually a temple and residence of Franciscan Glagolitic from 15th century, with a relief of a dragon, after which it got its name.

Cycling, windsurfing and surfing

For those who like cycling or mountaineering and use their own two feet rather than two wheels, a climb to Vidova Gora is especially interesting. It is located on 778 m above sea level and it offers a beautiful view of the archipelago – islands of Hvar, Korčula and Vis, and world-known beach Golden Cape, listed among 40 the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Image may contain: mountain, sky, outdoor and nature

In springtime, you can also enjoy windsurfing and surfing because the wind will take you to the exact direction you wish for. Those who are more daring can devote themselves to diving which is equally interesting at any time of year. Bol Tourist Board leaves nothing to chance so they paid special attention to perfectly arranged walkways and small quad roads.

But, Golden Cape beach is a perfect place for all the more popular kitesurfing because of the west wind (maestral) that blows at the speed of 15-25 knots. If you are not a professional kitesurfer, do not worry, there is a kitesurfing school in Bol.

Crafty hands of Brač people made magnificent stone works

If you ask people from tourist agencies or Bol Tourist Board to recommend an excursion around the place and the island, they will certainly recommend a visit to famous Brač’s masonry school in Pučišća where magnificent works of art are made of Brač’s stone. Once you are enchanted by the works of crafty stonemasons’ hands, we recommend you a visit to Blaca desert, the former famous Glagolitic desert where stars observatory was located at more recent times. It is on the south side of the island of Brač, between Milna and Bol. Tour guides can tell you the story about this desert, but the most important thing to know is that there are a monastery and a church.

Increasingly popular Nordic climbing

Nordic climbing is becoming all the more popular and it is exactly the sport that is very interesting in springtime. By setting out on this hilly excursion that lasts a little less than 4 hours you are keeping fit and preserving your health, and what’s most important, enjoying the fresh air and beautiful nature. The Nordic excursion starts in Murvica, and with an easy climb, you will come to Silvio and Stipančić monastery where stone tombs are located. If you continue on, you will come across aforementioned Dragon’s Cave and see many reliefs, carved triptychs and unusual characters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1LpfSrzMxY

A 75 kilometres-long Bura trail was prepared with professional cyclists and those who prefer long-distance cycling routes in mind. It is appealing to competitors as well as to the viewers for its attractive single track sections, fast descents, demanding climbs, and some technical parts most likely to be mastered by those who really cycle like a pro.

To avoid leaving everthing on a tourist ride, the fastest and most skilful cyclists wil be awarded. The hosts prepared a rich prize pool, and everyone can participate in an always-attractive tombola lottery.

https://youtu.be/A85Uy1FO0JQ

The hosts also took care of the real feast after the race at the same location, so that all competitors, their escorts and those who will intentionally or accidentally follow the race, can enjoy the abundant gastronomic and enological offer of the island of Brač.

And while all of the last year’s participants have only words of praise for the 2017 catching the wind race, everyone hopes that this year’s event will exceed all expectations. All the chances are that together with meeting great hosts who are always ready to help and give a good recommendation or information, you will also make – new friends!

THE PLEASURE OF SIGHTSEEING – UNDERWATER. Although culture heritage enthusiasts will especially appreciate the vicinity of beautiful Trogir, real enjoyment of sightseeing is - underwater! A PLACE THAT LIVES FOR TOURISM. Peace that you can rarely find, in combination with the sun and the sea whose beauty is worthy of the most famous summer destinations? That's Seget, an idyllic place for an escape from frenetic every-day life! Foreign guests describe it with a sense of nostalgia – it looks like our favourite summer destination, before it became too noisy and crowded!

You will find many praises for Seget – for hospitality of hosts and their knowledge of foreign languages, and as well for accommodation tidiness and neatness and really great food – guests are delighted by luxurious big meals, especially for breakfast, whether in private accommodation, restaurants in one of the camps like Belvedere, or hotel facilities.

RERFESHING ADDITION. Although it is recognized as an oasis of relaxation, jealously kept as a kind of a secret, Seget had recently been added on maps of active vacation enthusiasts – especially the two-wheeled vacation! To meet the needs of those who prefer somewhat easier bike ride, but also of true adventurists on macadam roads, Seget offers two roads of different difficulty levels – Health road and Napoleon's way – marked by adequate signalization and equipped with all useful objects and contents.

Visit dalmatian "El Camino de Santiago"

Worshippers will set off on the pilgrimage route to the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj on marked paths through picturesque landscapes rich with historical heritage. On their spiritual path to the heavenly mother they will pass relics of old paths and bridges, forts, tombstones, sacred places and buildings, and museums.

The Image of the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj was brought from Rama to Sinj in 1687 by the Franciscans who fled from the Turks. Ever since, the faithful people have been coming to their saviour who, according to the legend, has defended them when they were greatly outnumbered by the enemy in 1715.

Every year thousands of worshipers, especially the youth, set off on a pilgrimage towards the city of Sinj. The event takes place on the nights of the holiday dedicated to Our Lady of Sinj – from August 8th until August 15th, when the central ceremony is held. Accompanied by the sounds of church bells ringing and fanfares, the Image of the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj is brought from the church onto the streets for a grand procession. To carry the Image on one's shoulder represents a great honour.

karta

Worshippers arrive from several directions, mostly from the south, from Solin, and from the north, from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Our Lady of Sinj Route is 148km long spanning from Solin – Sinj – Livno – Tomislavgrad – Rama. It is a pilgrimage used through centuries to travel from several different directions to the largest Madonna sanctuary in southern Croatia. Our Lady of Sinj Route project is approved within the IPA Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina project and relies on the traditional walking and riding paths, as well as the abandoned route of Rera, which was once Sinj's railway.

staza_gospi_sinjskoj

By developing the accompanying infrastructure and raising awareness of immense value of cultural and religious heritage, the Our Lady of Sinj route is slowly superseding local frames and is gaining an international dimension. The route is active throughout the whole year, not just in the period of the holiday.

It is a unique experience to set on an ancient religious journey by foot, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, to find peace and sanctuary in the safety of Our Lady of Sinj.

1715 Siege of Sinj

August 10, 2017, 8.30 pm

SINJ PERFORMANCE
Under cover of August night, when sultry summer days are relieved only for a short time by its fresh air, there are two acts to be played. The first act starts at the Pijaca, the main town square, when the Ottomans conquer the town of Sinj, burn the church down and take the people into slavery. An effective performance is given by the members of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) who, dressed in Ottoman costumes, climb down roofs of the surrounding buildings, in that way faithfully evoking the feeling of panic of the people of Sinj facing the violent enemy.

Riding triumphantly in a coach, Mustafa Pasha Čelić announces in an overbearing manner that the Sinj fortress will be conquered without difficulty, while at the same time the Fortress at the Old Town shelters the people and a handful of defenders, together with the painting of the Mother of God. The second acttakes place at the Old Town, where the Defence Council take the decision to defend their town from the enemy much superior to the mand stronger than them.

The act also shows Pasha’s tent, wild parties and rage of the Ottomans after the people of Sinj have refused to surrender. Several times the Ottoman shave attempted to taketheFortress by storm, but their attacks have been successfully repulsed. After the painting of the Madonna is carried in procession led by Father Pavao, a messengerbrings news: ‘The Ottomans are now in flight! ‘ Sinj camp is thrilled and the grateful people, defenders, friars and officers, standing in front of the image of the Madonna, sing a thanks giving song ‘Oh, the Madonna of Sinj, Holy Virgin…’

Te eighth staging of the 1715 battle and the preceding events is to take place, in order to commemorate glorious defence of Sinj from the Ottoman invasion and a wonderful moment when the Mother of Mercy protected her people from enemy violence. It is a moment which has marked the history and the identity of Sinj, a moment being revived by the heroic Alka and worship of the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj, victory of faith and harmony of the Sinj knights, and hope for the help of their heavenly patroness.

  1. UNIQUE GASTRO EXPERIENCE. Understandably, when it comes to their visit to Dugopolje, gastronomads will firstly choose the treats for the palate! And is there a better idea, than the prosciutto that won numerous local gastronomic contests? The specific taste and the uniform reddish color of the champion delicacy creatively named Smjeli (eng. The Brave) are the result of the strong Dalmatian bura associated with mild exposure to smoke and drying in a natural way.

Check out why this prosciutto won so many gastronomic golden plate awards, and should you prefer some other trophies – the sports ones! – you shouldn't be dissapointed as well! Dugopolje offers a handful of tournaments and races where you can have loads of fun as a spectator or even as a participant!

The fans of the bocce ball tournaments will be thrilled with the 2nd International Bocce Tournament Koprivno 2017, organized by the bocce club „Sokol“ from Dugopolje, while lovers of American football will gladly visit Growth of a game camp (4. – 06.08.). 2. THE THRILLS OF TRILJ. A new attraction for lovers of sophisticated music proves that Dalmatian hinterland has a truly quality tourism offer. Thrill Blues Festival (July 14) at the Trilj city park is an epitome of a well-known Latin proverb: nomen est omen – according to the lineup, it sure will be quite exciting! Trilj and Sinj blues forces – „DBLUZ“ and „Ozone“, Eric Sardinas & Big Motor from LA, "Black Mountain" from Kotor, Rijeka's guitarist Hal known all over the world, and the  „Sunnysiders“ - band of the artistic director of the festival - musician Boris Hrepić Hrepo, guarantee a top portion of blues!

But, the Trilj novelties do not end here - in June there is also opening of the reconstructed Stari most (eng. Old bridge), the former iron bridge whose construction began in 1878 under the watchful eye of the emperor Franjo Josip I., and the launch of the Cetina beaches project is also expected! If you visit this intriguing place, expect some legendary attractions – both tasty ones (Days of Komin, Pura and Brozin, Gastronomic Folk Festival – July 27) and those to suit all tastes (the indispensable Feast of St. Mihovil, September 29).

3. WELL-KNOWN BRANDS OF KLIS – THE TASTIEST LAMB DISHES... AND GAME OF THRONES! No fan of the planetary popular „Game of Thrones“ series, would fail to recognize in Klis one of its most emblematic filming locations – the ancient Meereen! Resorceful guides of the „Game of Thrones“ thematic tour will make sure that you don't miss a single detail relevant to the series, and the rocky building located on the very tip of the abrupt and from all sides inaccessible gorge between Mosor and Kozjak, will reward you with a magnificent view of Split and Dalmatia!

You will soon discover why Klis is much-adored by gastronomads (try its traditional dishes like top-quality lamb, uljenak, lentils, octopus and beans stew!), and by adrenaline enthusiasts too – it hosts two attractive cycling races - the Grebbening and the XCM Atrium spring trophy!

4. VRLIKA – THE PLACE OF THE MOST BELOVED OPERA HERO... AND OF THE TASTIEST FRIED PASTRY IN THE WORLD! The picturesque Vrlika, marked by the mountain, the Cetina River and Lake Peruča, has managed to unite such peculiarities in a relatively small space! It is much loved for its numerous active vacation possibilities - biking, riding, jeep safaris, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, hiking, trekking, hunting and fishing – and it will be especially exciting in June for its unique two-day bike tournament - Camping & Biking Vrlika 2017!

Neither the lovers of sightseeing will be dissapointed here – they will be interested in taking a tour of the Church of St. Salvation (Cro. Sv. Spas) with the oldest bell tower in Croatia (9th century), the archaeological site of Koljani and the Česma from the time of Emperor Franjo Josip. Precisely this is a place of staging the famous „Ero from another world“ opera every July, about a cunning serf who manages to outwit two Turks. This opera over time became a trademark of Vrlika and its ambassador around the world, and it is an incredible experience to watch it in its natural environment! The same goes for the impressive Vrlika silent circle dance, a part of the UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage, but also for the - traditional fried pastry (uštipci)! Do not miss the International fried pastry competition in August, and make some pleasant gastronomic memories! An excellent choice of all these attractions will be available to you during the The evening of Singing, Dancing and Folk Costumes (July 22), while the town atmosphere is definitely most cheerful on October 7 (the Day of the City and the Feast of Our Lady of Rosary).

5. SINJ – HEADING TO HEROIC CITY THIS SUMMER TOO. Sinj is simply irresistible - both to the eye and ear, to the heart and soul – and to the palate too! The city which had ice cream on its menus back in 1838, enchants its visitors with the sophisticated blend of the Mediterranean, Oriental and continental cuisine – and not just gastronomads!

Who could resist the famous arambaše, or delicacies like fried frogs, freshwater crabs buzara, cetina trout, paired with Sinj wines – hrvaština and maraština? And, what is even better, these specialties are the tastiest part of the most celebrated and beloved Sinj manifestations, hugely visited despite the unbearable summer heat – the Sinj Alka and the feast day of Our Lady!

DSC_1331

Although for most people these two events are a reason enough to visit this truly special city, many of them also want to take a tour of the Museum of the Sinj Alka, and during the rehearsals preceding the main competition, the city has about 40,000 visitors! Those looking for meditation and peace will gladly visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sinj as well as new thematic trail towards Our Lady's city. It is hard to believe that the quiet and traditional Sinj has a wild adrenaline side, but there you can also go horseback riding, paragliding, enjoy the attractive biking routes or go for a QUAD adventure!

The city also has a sports aerodrome, visited by numerous sailors, sky divers and modellers. There is also a number of competitons – from the „City Challenge“ and „Cetina Adventure“ race (June 3), to the 5th „To the source of Cetina“ („Do izvora Cetine“) bycicle race (June 11), National Sailing Championship (July 2-9), Sinj Air Show (August 19) and the Traditional International Galloping Races in September.

Sinj thought also of music lovers – they will surely enjoy SARS - Alternative Culture Festival (July 21 and 22) and Gljevstock on June 3 - a festival of music, love and socializing! And for July 7, the heroic city has prepared a real treat - the sophisticated rhythms of top musicians - the Sudar Percussion ensemble!

Still in doubt that Dalmatian Zagora can be really exciting? Summer 2017 is a great opportunity to give it a chance to prove you're wrong!
