Europe\u2019s top honour in the heritage field goes to 21 exemplary achievements from 15 European countries\u00a0<em>(for the full list see below)<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"2020 Winners announced: European Heritage Awards \/ Europa Nostra Awards\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3kTNOJiVbkA?list=PLNc26k4M0SlPPk563KAVdUjGU7Mr6Wr_7\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s impressive collection of award winners range from the restoration of Rubens\u2019 garden pavilion in Antwerp (Belgium), to the revival of the renaissance arsenal on the island of Hvar (Croatia); from the trans-European network \u201cTramontana\u201d dedicated to the research of the tangible and intangible heritage of mountainous regions, to the sensitive preservation of a cultural landscape formed by subterranean caves and wineries in the province of Burgos (Spain); from the rebirth of the impressive Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio in l\u2019Aquila (Italy), heavily damaged by the devastating earthquake of 2009, to the \u201cAmbulance for Monuments\u201d with an emergency team of craftspeople ready to save endangered heritage in Romania; and from \u201cScanning for Syria\u201d, a research project carried out by a research centre in The Netherlands, to a major exhibition marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, organised in co-production between Poland and Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heritage lovers and supporters from Europe and all around the world can\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/vote.europanostra.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">vote online<\/a>\u00a0for their favourite award winners and decide which achievement will win this year\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Public Choice Award<\/strong>. In times of confinement and physical distancing, the European Commission and Europa Nostra hope to inspire a particularly large number of people to discover this year\u2019s award-winning achievements and to share the names of their three favourite winners.\u00a0<strong>The Public Choice Award will be announced in the autumn of 2020. At a moment where hundreds of millions of Europeans remain physically separated, our cultural heritage continues, more than ever, to bring people together. This year\u2019s winners of the European Heritage Awards \/ Europa Nostra Awards are inspiring and powerful examples which truly contribute to a closer, more united and more resilient Europe<\/em>,\u201d said\u00a0<strong>Mariya Gabriel<\/strong>, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>In these trying times, our award laureates, with their success stories of how adversity can be overcome through expertise, dedication and teamwork, are true messengers of hope. These exemplary awarded projects demonstrate that cultural heritage is vital to our mental and physical recovery from the trauma caused by the pandemic. Our shared heritage and its custodians can contribute in so many ways: from making accessible cultural content via creative digital solutions to undertaking concrete restoration and rehabilitation works as an act of social and economic rebirth for our cities and villages<\/em>,\u201d stated&nbsp;<strong>Hermann Parzinger<\/strong>, Executive President of Europa Nostra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.europeanheritageawards.eu\/facts-figures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Heritage Awards \/ Europa Nostra Awards<\/a>&nbsp;were launched by the European Commission in 2002 and have been run by Europa Nostra \u2013 the European Voice of Civil Society Committed to Cultural Heritage \u2013 ever since. The Awards have the support of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/programmes\/creative-europe\/node_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creative Europe<\/a>&nbsp;programme of the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Award winners were selected by independent&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.europeanheritageawards.eu\/jury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">juries<\/a>&nbsp;composed of heritage experts from across Europe, upon thorough evaluation of candidatures submitted by organisations and individuals from 30 European countries. The Juries also decided to give three Europa Nostra Awards to remarkable heritage achievements from European countries not taking part in the EU Creative Europe programme, namely Switzerland and Turkey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, two new ILUCIDARE Special Prizes will also be awarded from among the submitted applications to the European Heritage Awards \/ Europa Nostra Awards. The&nbsp;<strong>Croatian Ministry of Culture<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>Ministry of Regional Development<\/strong>&nbsp;were partners to Grad Hvar in the 30-year project to rehabilitate Hvar\u2019s Arsenal. The project was funded by the&nbsp;<strong>Hvar municipality<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>Ministry of Culture<\/strong>, the&nbsp;<strong>Ministry of Regional Development<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Split \u2013 Dalmatia County<\/strong>&nbsp;with additional funds coming from civil associations and the&nbsp;<strong>European Regional Development Fund<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/hotspots.net.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/49784028301_e39e7e69d2_c-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41872\" srcset=\"https:\/\/croatia-hotspots.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/49784028301_e39e7e69d2_c-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/croatia-hotspots.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/49784028301_e39e7e69d2_c-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/croatia-hotspots.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/49784028301_e39e7e69d2_c-1-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The construction of the medieval Arsenal began in the 13th century. Archaeological finds indicate that it was used as an arsenal since the 3rd-4th centuries AD. The original Venetian wooden beams are still present on the ceiling of the gallery on the first floor while some other original features of the building, most notably the frescoes and theatre boxes have been kept and restored to their original form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The necessary new additions to the building were designed in a contemporary style, thus emphasising the original character of the building. These new components to the building\u2019s historical layers have successfully evoked a dramatic meeting of old and new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Jury noted that \u201c<em>this respectful revitalisation project has adapted a very significant building to the modern needs of the community and adds a new cultural dimension to the tourism of the area. It represents a long-term effort to ensure the preservation of the Arsenal, a site of high heritage value. The stratification of the 16th-century building and the later 18th-century theatre has been properly recognised in the conservation works.
