STARI GRAD 2400 – AN EXCEPTIONAL ANNIVESARY FOR A PLACE OF UNIVERSAL MEDITERRANEAN BEAUTY

EXCELLENT TIMING. Stari Gard celebrates its  2400th birthday! And that its time has come in tourist sense as well is shown by recent trends on world market, where authentic Mediterranean places are highly rated  (for example, Italian Liguria and picturesque Cinque Terre have very fast become extremely popular worldwide due to social networks)!

stari-grad-hektorovic_1

Synchronizing current trends, rich history and genuine ambience whose preserved heritage goes back to even ancient times, are great attributes  of tourist attractively of Stari Grad. Is there a better moment to visit it but on its impressive 2400th anniversary, accompanied by many cultural, sports and entertaining events?

stari-grad-2_1

MAGNIFICENT JUBILANT YEAR. Although the entire 2016 is dedicated to this anniversary, central celebration will be held from September 7-11. An abundance of events have been planned, like festival of the sea and sailors Dani u vali (Days in Bay), anniversary symposium, lectures, workshops and gastronomic manifestations (do not miss presentation of Stari Grad restaurants NA BON PRO on June 13!), concerts and exhibitions – from ancient bread to painting crafts.

_dsf9203_1

May and June in Stari Grad will be marked by sport and music – more precisely, by cycling and klapa song! On May 28 festival of island singers Večer od Kantonjo was held, and as Croatian Brass Band Stari Grad is celebrating 140th anniversary this year, they have prepared series of concerts with surprise guests, which will be held during the entire summer!

poluotok-kabal_1

We would gladly visit Stari Grad on June 25th when klapa Cambi performs on Škor square, and concert of Gustafi will also be fun. They will perform at the party upon finishing cycling race Biciklom kroz baštinu (Cycling through heritage) (June 11 and 12). If you are a cycling enthusiast, and you would gladly be a part of the race, you should take this title literally – namely, the race goes through Stari Grad field, which has been under protection of UNESCO since 2008.

starogradsko-polje_1

Together with all mentioned events, many famous names will jollify Stari Grad this summer – from hosts, Faroski Kantaduri and chakavian poets from the island, to cellist Ana Rucner (August 8), Matija Dedić & Tedi Spalato (August 12), Crvena jabuka (August 13), Big Band Makarska & Marko Tolja (August 23).

Dvorci 1a

  1. VELIKI TABOR

Veliki Tabor is one of the most beautiful fortresses in northwesten Croatia, in Croatian Zagorje near Desinić. This building located at the altitude of 334m is a zero-category monument. Its name originates from the word tabor which denotes a war camp. It was built for defense from the Turks. Veliki Tabor is one of the best preserved medieval and Renaissance fortified towns of continental Croatia. The castle was built in the second half of the 15th century. It was built by the noble family Rattkay during the 16th century and remained in their possession until 1793. It had many famous masters: the Counts of Celje (who owned it at the earliest), Matija and Ivaniš Korvin, the Rattkay family, and the family of famous Croatian artist Oton Iveković. At the beginning of 90s of the 20th century, it is included among the Museums of Croatian Zagorje and operated as museum and excursion site.

www.wineenthusiast.com

sl_043010115903

Istra - 10 Best Wine Travel Destinations 2015

Wine Enthusiast, established back in 1979, is a world leader for wines, publishing hundreds of wine reviews in its each edition and with more than 300 million printed catalogues. Its web pages make the Wine Enthusiast content available worldwide. In view of all the above said, this is clearly a perfect opportunity for the promotion of Istria.

This flattering recognition has been awarded by Mike DeSimone and Jeff Jensenn. The two known as the World Wine Guys have visited Istria three times so far, the last time in July 2013. During their stays on the Istrian peninsula, they were given an opportunity to learn about Istrian indigenous wine varieties and wines such as malvasia, teran, merlot and others. They also provide advice as to where to stay and what to visit as well as where to taste the best wines.

They are responsible for positioning Istria on the very top of the already established world wine regions including Piedmont in Italy, the Loire and Rhône Valleys in France, the American Mendocino. The best ranked also includes Orlando and the Finger Lakes in the USA, Hawkes Bay in New Zealand, Galicia in Spain and the Okanagan in Canada.

With regard to this exceptional honour and ranking among the TOP 10, the president of the Croatian Sommelier Club Mr. Franko Lukež said the following: 'When the esteemed American Wine Enthusiast, with its 35 year long experience of where wine lives, ranks you among top ten wine tourist destinations in 2015 along with regions such as the Italian Piedmont, Spanish Galicia or French Loire and Rhône, then all the wine producers from the region – Istria in this case – have a big reason to celebrate. And, not only them! Wine should never be viewed without food. A glass of good wine is a natural ending of every good meal. The most exciting wine destinations are therefore locations offering excellent wines to accompany superb dishes: All is played out in glittering restaurant, rustic taverns or original farm households located in magnificent landscape. It is nice to be recognized by wine enthusiasts!'

With regard to the Wine Enthusiast's ranking Istria among top ten wine regions in the world, Denis Ivošević, Director of the Istria Tourist Board, emphasized that each new recognition and ranking among world best destinations had always raised quality criteria and represented a huge obligation for them as the reputation of one's own image in tourism had always been of the utmost importance. He continued by adding that this recognition was of special significance as it was awarded by a distinguished web portal with a reputation of an opinion maker as well as in view of Istrian ability and capacity of winning world influencers and offering creativity and innovation of its offer in the period following the four years of winning best TOP destination awards.

The fact that Supetar has always had a sense for tourism is shown by its attractive offer of private accommodation, as well as by the kindness and courtesy of the hosts.

The project leader, Lino Ursić, and archaeologist Miroslav Gogala led us through thematic path and invited all of us to join the revealing of gorgeous veils of centuries and talked about how things were in the Province of Dalmatia as far back as the ninth year after Christ!

By visiting this road section, tourists will be able to learn everything about the past and ancient times when the Roman Empire ruled this small but important corner of the world.

With the collapse of the Pannonian-Delmata rebellion in the year 9 AD (bellum Batonianum), the construction of the road network in the Province of Dalmatia was imposed to the Roman Empire as a primary military and security task.
The starting point of this major infrastructure project was Salona, administrative and political center of the province. These were, after all, the first vehicle roads in this area. In less than seven years (14 – 20 AD), agile governor (Legatus Augusti pro praetore) of Roman Dalmatia - Publius Cornelius Dolabella, built five roads through the interior of the province with a total length of more than 550 Roman miles (more than 820 km).

The remains of the ancient communication road found in the region of Kurtovići-Klapavice, (the area of municipalities Klis and Dugopolje), correspond to the basic direction of Roman roads that were leaving Salona over the Klis saddle (Klis - Grlo), stretched along the Dugopolje plateau, and parted in two directions near the hamlet of Kapela. A single highway route continued northwards and to the veteran colony Aequum (Čitluk near Sinj), while the second was directed to the north-east towards the Roman military camp Tilurium (Gardun), that is, the Pons Tiluri (Trilj) crossing on the Cetina River.

The road is nowadays preserved in a length of approximately 1.5 Roman miles (2 km), while its width (originally from 4 to 6m) varies according to the building interventions in this area during the following centuries. This transport route was in use as the vehicle road probably until 7th century and the Great Migration that overwhelmed the former space of Roman Dalmatia.

The ancient main road direction Kurtovići – Klapavice is a first of series of implementations of the archeological tourism project Roman road communications of Central Dalmatia. The project bearer is the Tourist Board of Split - Dalmatia County, while municipalities of Klis and Dugopolje are project partners. Cleaning of the terrain, archaeological supervision and rescue excavations at the monitored site were performed in the period from August to November 2014, followed by further archaeological research in order to collect as much data on this road section.

We warmly welcome this initiative of Split-Dalmatia County, and we strongly believe that this is just the beginning of capital projects in the revival and evaluation of the glorious past of Central Dalmatia and another sumptuous contribution to its rich tourist offer.

"There is no place on earth like Croatia"

Young american Cynthia Sao write about ideal way to explore Croatia.

Sailing 2

My first encounter with Croatian natives happened in the States few years ago. I have never been so entertained by a group of strangers - such friendly, warming, and prideful people. They spoke so strongly of where they came from and insisted that I plan on seeing for myself.

Brac 2

This August, I was given the amazing opportunity to sail the Dalmatian Coast, the ideal way to explore Croatia.

Here are a few must-see places:

SPLIT:

Walking through the old town and along the sea wall during the night is definitely lively. There are plenty of people strolling and something to do throughout the town.

You also cannot miss Diocletian's Palace during the day. It is stunning, but be sure to carefully follow the directions of the signs placed throughout the palace. The workers there don't take kindly to rebellious tourists.

Krka 2

KRKA NATIONAL PARK, SIBENIK:

This is the place for all the nature addicts and photographers. Hiking through Krka, covered in natural beauty, provides you with a view of crystal clear, greenish-blue, rushing waterfalls. There is also a section in front of a waterfall you can swim in.

Skradin

You can spend all day there and there are plenty of food vendors around. The perfect place for a family.

Hvar 2

HVAR:

Living many years in Southeast Florida, I compared Hvar to the Miami of Croatia - beautiful people, trendy fashion, and the finest yachts.

Hvar 1

But Hvar's landscape is incomparable to anything found in the US. Yes, this is the place for you, if you're into high-end cocktails and the hottest VIP parties, but if you're like me and prefer travelling in search of the scenic/historical atmosphere, a short trek to Hvar's fortress is perfection. You'll have a full view of Hvar and the Adriatic harbor.

KORČULA:

Korcula was a top favorite of mine. This is a great place to lay back a little after a visit to Hvar. It's relaxing, but with a large enough crowd to still feel lively.

Korcula 1

The layout of the town is well spread-out, unconfined, and at each end is a view of the Adriatic. At night, the streets are filled with live music, and I have to add that I had best Croatian wine and Pag cheese here.

You also must go to the top of Sveti Marko Cathedral's bell tower. It's a tight walk to the top, but you'll get a 360 view of Korcula accompanied by the ringing church bells, if you're lucky.

Korcula 2

DUBROVNIK:

This major city took a top favorite, alongside Korcula. It is much more bustling, but there is so much to do here. You can explore the amazing views off the city walls, have a beer and jump off a 30 ft cliff at Cafe Buza, and listen to top notch Jazz musicians at Troubadour.

Dubrovnik 3

It is impossible to be bored here. Many travelers from around the world will for sure be in Dubrovnik, so it is the perfect place for the lone traveler to go out, meet other travelers and have good time.

Buza Cafe

A couple cons:

* Though the locals are friendly, I didn't find a lot of the vendors, or the workers of costumer service to be the same. Patience is key here.

* If you're going to take a credit card with you, make sure it's a Visa or MasterCard. Many other credit companies are not allowed. And for the smaller towns, CARRY CASH.  The family I traveled with also found it a little difficult to cash in traveler's checks. I'd say forget traveler's checks all together.

Overall, this was a dream vacation. I can confidently say, there is no place like Croatia. I can’t wait to return.

In their reviews on Split, many foreign bloggers continously admire extraordinary energy of what they like to call an ancient city with a young soul. Nowhere as in Split are past and present so harmoniously intertwined, nor is anywhere else 1700 years worth heritage so seductively blended with the energetic and irresistible pulse of modern life.

Split, once perceived as a port city, long ago changed its identity of the center of transit of eager tourists to islands and coastal areas and transformed into a tourist leader of Dalmatia. Tourists, who were 10 years ago eager to embark on any ferry, now intensively fantasize about moving to Split.
