There can be no better place to present this fine and homemade food than Sinj, a town with a long-standing tradition of making prosciutto and dry-cured meats, with recipes and the secrets of the craft that reach well into the distant past and are passed down through generations.
For tenth year running, the following are expected to participate at the Fair: major Croatian producers of prosciutto and dry-cured meat products, family farms, producers of prosciutto and Slavonian ham, representatives of regional meat industries, representatives of associations of producers, individual producers, major producers of Istrian and Drniš prosciutto, guests from Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, representatives of pig breeders associations, regional family farms breeding pigs, representatives of the leading chain stores and hoteliers and caterers.

Just like in the past years, a committee comprised of renowned experts and scientists will evaluate the specific quality of prosciutto of individual producers participating at the Fair, the evaluation being based on the Ordinance on Prosciutto Quality Evaluation (Pravilnik o ocjenjivanju kvalitete pršuta).
Visitors will be able to become acquainted with the magnificent and precious heritage through the performances of cultural clubs from Dalmatia and beyond, but also through the presentation of traditional customs and unique handicrafts.

3rd Cetina region carnival
After the past two extremely successful carnivals featuring the traditional masks and characters of the Cetina region, we eagerly expect the same this year. This year’s carnival, organized by the Town of Sinj and the Sinj Tourist Board, will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2017.
Our town has the honor to host the traditional carnival parade for the third time. Even for one day, the town will be taken over by Didi, the traditional parade with a strict schedule and rules of conduct deeply embedded in the local tradition.
The Didi have a long tradition of performing and are the best conveyors and keepers of the traditional festive customs of the Cetina region settlements.
The impressive figures demonstrate their strength and endurance by carrying sheep skin (mišina) on their heads at the height of a meter and a half, and bells around their waists. They are dressed in old clothing sewn with colorful details. They embody the ritual battle between the good spirits and winter, which they chase off with noise and jumping every year in the time of Lent.
Carnival customs such as this one exist in other parts of Croatia as well, but the value of the yearly carnival parades in the villages under the Kamešnica mountain was officially recognized by the Croatian Ministry of Culture. The parades are now protected as Croatian intangible cultural heritage.
Considering how the town of Sinj has always preserved and valued its rich cultural heritage, this carnival parade sets out to popularize the aforementioned tradition of carnival customs which are unique in the whole of Europe.
Besides the traditional carnival characters, a number of other groups will be participating in the parade, enriching the overall experience with their comic performances.
This year’s parade will also feature the traditional characters of the Neorić and Sutina settlements. Their characteristic is the 10-meter-high flag carried by the proud flag-bearers.
The jolly parade from over 20 different villages of the Cetina region will be led by noisy, colorful and defiant rams starting at 3 p.m. on the following route: NK Junak – Put Šumarije – Put Piketa –Miljenka Buljana Street (up to the bus terminal) – Put Ferate –Kneza Branimira Street – Brnaška Street – Kralja Tomislava Square.
The highlight of the parade will be on Sinj Pijaca where the groups will be presented. After the presentation an organized entertainment program will follow, lasting from 3:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Dalmatian Zagora - fantasy land for cyclist!
Dalmatian Zagora is becoming increasingly recognized as a fantasy land for cyclists – both by two-wheeled vacation enthusiasts and by renters -almost all of them offer rent a bike or bike tours.
25 roads on 550 km, arranged, mapped and marked by Tourist Board of Split –Dalmatia County and Cycling Association; they go through the most beautiful regions of Dalmatian Zagora. TB of Split-Dalmatia County is especially sensitive about Dalmatian Zagora, so it has paid special attention to this region while working on a project of cycling roads that started three years ago.
These roads pass by rivers and lakes, waterfalls and springs, over beautiful hills and mountains, wind around historical sights and old taverns and rural households where traditional delicacies can be tried and tasted.
BIKE-FRIENDLY PROJECTS AND INTIATIVES. 4 roads located in Dugopolje, 10 in Trilj, 5 in Sinj and 3 in Vrlika can be found on a map Dalmatian Zagora – west; first of all 5 maps which are at disposal of Split-Dalmatia County. 3 roads located in Vrgorac, together with those in Imotski that are going to be arranged at the beginning of 2017, will be in a new map Dalmatian Zagora – east. Together with arranging roads, leading men of County’s tourism also started with certifying Bike and Bed facilities, while in Trilj 2 educations for Bike guides were held, so County has successfully certified 45 new bike guides. Cycling races are also being intensely organized, so this year on Dalmatian Zagora area two races were held in category of Croatian Cup: VN Dugopolje and XCM Atrium spring in Klis, and several recreational bike tours and races. All this has opened new possibilities for successful tourism development in Dalmatian Zagora!
LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE ROADS! Among 25 beautiful roads, each of them characterised by their own uniqueness, it is almost impossible to single out the favourites, but we are sure that, whichever you take, you will have an exceptional experience.
Vranjača Cave, which is among the most intriguing in Dalmatia due to the richness of its speleothems, can be visited as a part of the road in Dugopolje (401 Vranjača). This completey asphalted road that leads to Vranjača Cave and Kotlenice place and ascends up the county road in a small village Kute. If you manage to conquer this ascent and several consecutive serpentines, you will face a new challenge – almost 10 km of road that leads to this protected geomorphological natural site!
No less attractive is 404 Pometeno Brdo road in Klis – apart from being surrounded by Pometeno brdo, it goes through 7 villages located in untouched nature. Also, there are 7 historical churches and numerous cultural-historical sights, among which is baroque fort Tartaglia from 17th/18th century, ancient localities north of St Michael's Church and numerous old wells!
Truly idyllic is 451- Cetina Sinj road. It partly follows the Cetina river flow and goes through fertile Sinj field and variety of colourful cultivated land, all the way to Trilj and equestrian club St Michael. It also has attractive resting resorts where those in love of tame natural landscape can rest and regain their strength for the upcoming adventures.
To cyclotourists who are also culture enthusiasts, road 452-Aequum will be breath-taking! Together with valuable archaeological site from 1st century, ancient colony COLONIA CLAVDIA AEQVVM (today’s Čitluk) there are also unavoidable points – neoromanic parish church of St Nicholas in Bajagić place, as well as impressive bridges over Cetina, in Panj and Han. Miloševo lake in Hrvace place is also worth visiting. It was here where, according to a legend, St George killed the dragon!
Road Pet izvora (454) will by all means provide you with an unforgettable experience – there you can find clear and cold springs of Cetina tributaries – Ruda, Rumin and Grab, which are protected significant landscapes. Another extraordinary thing is that old mills in Grab grind wheat using the force of water flow in a traditional way! Road 455-Oko Visoke will lead, all of a sudden, to steep hilly ascent, surrounded by greenery of numerous boskets and groves.
VAST QUANTITY OF CONTENTS. Aforementioned roads aren't even the third part of the entire content that awaits you if you set off to two-wheeled adventure along Dalmatian Zagora. Among other roads there are those which are tied to interesting tales. For example, 507-Gaj Liberije road (Trilj-Gardun-Tilurium-Trilj); 3 km long road named after a boy whose relief is shown in stele that was found there. He is holding a ball resembling the football ball, and points to the possibility that this famous sports game was played near Cetina even 2000 years ago and that Romans took it from Illyrian tribe Delmati!). Also, there is one named after world globetrotters (it is highly demanding paved mountain road, 51 km long, named 575 - Mate Svjetski, after a man from Vrgorac who spent 19 years travelling alone and discovering the world by going through 360 000 km, on 5 continents.
We won't tell you everything, discover the rest by yourselves – and we leave the choice of roads to you. Create your own travelling memories filled with unexplored iconic beauty by going through fascinating landscapes and refreshing with homemade dishes of the regions you pass through!

Destination worth visiting – take a boat ride or cycle through Sisak and it s surroundings
Did you know?
During the 18th and 19th century Sisak was the largest Croatian inland harbor, and river Kupa hosted up to thousand ships.
The first river steamboat in Croatian history was Sloga from Sisak.
The first Roman emperor Augustus, who conquered Segesta, issued a proclamation to conduct the population census, due to which Mary and Joseph went from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
The oldest football club in Croatia was established in 1906 in Sisak by the name of Segesta.
At the estuary of Kupa into Sava, proudly stands the witness of the most important Croatian victory over Turkish invaders in 16th century - Old Town fortress.
The first railway line in Croatia was built between Zidani Most and Sisak via Zagreb.
Journey through Sisak-Moslavina County
We have visited the city of Sisak, a historic city on three rivers and its marvelous surroundings. City is bordered by the dense forest at the edge of which you are calmly greeted by the magnificent Old Town. It gives you a warm welcome and reveals a wealth of historical heritage, in the irresistible whirl of miraculous nature.
City of Sisak owes its unique position to three rivers: Kupa, Sava and Odra. Kupa is the ultimate symbol of Sisak and also a stage for numerous events throughout the year. There are few cities in Croatia whose inhabitants can pride themselves with the fact that river flows through the city center where you can swim, paddle, dive, or take a ride on a boat or ship. You can find out more about the secrets of Kupa river in this article.
(Detail from Kupa nights, photo: Sisak Tourist Board Facebook page)
But let's start from the beginning. We started the journey with the visit to village Krapje in the heart of Lonjsko polje nature park.
We are thankful to professional guides from the nature park who gave us a lecture about this unique area.
Birds, flowers, sandbanks and traditional wooden houses form one of the most picturesque landscapes in Croatia, it feels as if we wandered into one of the fairytales from Ivana Brlić Mažuranić or H. C. Andersen.
Lovely village of Krapje is rich with valuable traditional architecture of national significance and the only village in Croatia with the status of architectural heritage site. Since 1995, it has become a tradition to celebrate the day of European heritage.
One of the things especially interesting to us was the traditional house construction from natural materials (oak), perfectly integrated into natural surroundings. Diligence, craftsmanship and modesty that draw its roots from poverty of older generations, preserves the heritage of this region in a special way.
Lonja Field – take a boat ride through the natural paradise
After a tour around the village and around the soft sandbank of river Sava, we were taken for a ride with solar boat along the nature park Lonjsko polje.
The topography of this area was shaped by the river Sava throughout number of years. It has shaped the coastline, creating an unique landscapes which are enjoyed today by the visitors and residents of this area. If you want to know more about the old way of life in this area, visit the specially designed theme pathway that connects the northern part of Lonjsko Polje with Moslavina wine-growing hills and Sava River.
So we found out that Nature park Lonjsko polje contains one of the largest complexes of naturally preserved flooded lowland forests in Europe and beyond. Animals, plants and people have been living here for centuries in a happy symbiosis. And everything gives you a feeling of tranquility and peace. It almost seemed incredible that we left a bustling metropolis barely an hour ago.
One of the characteristic trees in this ecosystem is famous "Slavonian oak", well known in Europe for its quality. Of many plant, fish and animal species, we must mention storks, the greatest attraction you will be able to see up close, if you visit the village of Čigoč.
This pearl of Croatian heritage is located on the right bank of Sava river, along the river branch called Silence (Tišina). Due to the large number of nests on wooden roofs of Posavina houses, Čigoč village was proclaimed the first European village of storks in 1984. And storks love best to nest exactly in Čigoč, given the fact that here they nest 3,8 chicks per pair on average!
Since the weather served us well, we could see the fairy-tale ambience and enjoy the utter silence disturbed only by the sounds of birds. Trees and wooden houses, flowers and river nearby, have formed the peculiar composition of colors, sounds and smells.
The river lured us to swim. Sandbanks called us to stretch our towels on them. But we had a lot more places to visit.
Ethno village Old Lonja - one of the most beautiful destinations of our journey
After Krapja, we arrived at the ethno village Old Lonja. There we were blinded by hundred shades of green, something that can't be seen on streets of Zagreb. We were thrilled by the harmony, peace and quietness of this rural household, a place that has everything you need for the ideal vacation in nature.
Friendly hosts have greeted us, offered us wine and world-class liquors, roasted fish and local meat, which catapulted us into orbit of gastronomic enjoyment.
And tempted us to stay there a day or two or longer. (or until they send us away).
If you are looking for a rural household with affordable prices but incredible natural beauty, charm, natural harmony and fine food, be sure to visit this farm. It is just an hour away from Zagreb, and hosts can organize tours on demand and provide you with accommodation.
We moved on towards the ethnographic collection of Sučić family. Invigorated by local food and very happy, we marked the Old Lonja in our excursion schedule as a must see destination for the future.
Ethnographic collection of Sučić family
We visited the ethnographic collection of Sučić family which originated from preserving and collecting traditional objects and today has about 700 different items related to life and economy of this part of Posavina. We sow a real small ethnic treasure; from woodworking tools, farming tools, tools for fishing, transport vehicles, to various practical items related to daily life in the household. Folk costumes, towels, souvenirs, everything is created from natural materials collected or made by the family for years, and their impressive collection has been added to the list of Croatian cultural heritage.
Traditions Čigoć
foto: Tradicije Čigoć
We have also visited the famous Traditions Čigoć, another tourist attraction in this area. It is a well known for its traditional dishes from Posavina, of which we recommend their deer goulash, fish paprikash and "Posavina pot". With each dish they include special delicacy "Čigočica" (flatbread from the bread oven filled with homemade cheese and cream).
It is customary to hear some stories about tradition of river fishing from the hosts while tasting the carp and perch fishes prepared by their own recipe. Uniqueness of this place has been discovered by the campers, and we have unanimously agreed that they could not find a better place for absolute rest.
Sisak city - unusual and unconventional urban area that is easy to love
We came at the start of the three-day event, well known as Kupa nights, of which you can read in more detail on this link. We were taken on a guided tour (organized by the Sisak Tourist Board) through the city. The city is full of greenery, on each step you can see magnificent trees, parks and flower beds.
Kupa nights have certainly taken our full attention. The city was all about the boats, aero show spectacle and other interesting programmes.
Aero show best captures the spectacle that are this year's Kupa nights (photo Damir Pahić)
And a little more aerial acrobatics (photo Damir Pahić). The one who says there is no life in Sisak, has obviously never visited it. And he definitely should.
Out of other landmarks, whose description would require a whole new text, we will only mention the "Re-think" murals, Old Bridge - Military Sisak, Mali Kaptol, City Hall, Sculpture Park, Veliki Kaptol, Old Bridge, the Basilica of St. Quirinus, Sisak historic ring...
We have also visited the wonderful Old Town where we were transported in a relaxed and happy atmosphere of a Neretva river boat from the Boatmen Association of Sisak (Udruga lađara Sisak). By a pure chance we also witnessed the Sisak wedding scene that conjured up the spirit of this city - a city that seems to be pretty easy to love.
We ended our trip with cycling through Sisak, which is literally covered with cobwebs of bicycle paths through which we were guided. Sisak and surroundings are mecca for cyclists and active holidays, and we experienced that personally while driving through the entire city. It is difficult to single out whether it is better to ride in Neretva river boat or to cycle through Sisak, so we recommend you to try both.
We left full of impressions of the city that is in reach from Zagreb with just an hour drive. With its necklace of countryside households, with its unique nature park and the enchanting beauty of natural and architectural heritage, we are determined to pay another visit. And to make it as soon as possible. Because this destination definitely has a lot to show, throughout the seasons.

Equestrian tourism – an exquisite tourist attraction of Bjelovar-Bilogora county
By developing new forms of tourism in Croatian inland, some destinations have improved their offer and took it a step further from classic sightseeing tourism.
Development of agro-tourism with rich choice of domestic food and wine is complemented with new forms of tourist products and offerings. For example, there are ten active equestrian associations in Bjelovar-Bilogora county and around the same number of "horse welcome" agritourism estates.
Bjelovar-Bilogora county is also a host for national and international competitions in endurance riding. Starting this year, in collaboration with the international equestrian association ENGEA, first 8 certified guides for tourist horse riding have been registered in this area.
It is also an interesting fact that Bjelovar-Bilogora county area contains 198 kilometers of marked equestrian trails, which connect it with neighbouring Virovitica-Podravina and Koprivnica-Križevci counties. Equestrian tourism became a part of standard tourist offer in this area, as a result of synergy between the work of Tourist Board of Bjelovar-Bilogora county, enterpreneurs in private sector and professional associations. There has been a significant increase in tourist traffic throughout 2015, which is further improved with new complex tourist products including active vacation with emphasis on equestrian tourism.
Within this initiative, Bjelovar-Bilogora county will host the Balkans championship in long distance riding in September 2016, in cooperation with the Croatian Equestrian Federation.
International equestrian tourism convention was held in May.
Bjelovar-Bilogora county has recently hosted an international convention of equestrian tourism, which took place between 13 and 15 May 2016 at several locations throughout the county. In the meeting of professionals several discussions were held - about rural development through system of equestrian trails in Italy and Croatia, safety on riding trails and the development of inland tourism through the prism of equestrian activities. In addition, an international team of experts carried out the inspection and certification of equestrian trails in county, which included these trails in international listings of equestrian tourist offer.
Agritourism estate "On a little hill" – family farm Vlajinić
This three-day event is important for all agritourism estates - family farms on Bilogora route, which have been intensely developing their attractive offerings for guests from Croatia and all over Europe. This is the way they can further promote their thematic tourist products - from enogastronomy to cultural and active tourism.

Hotspots recommendation:
On the magical slopes of Bilogora hills near Bjelovar, there is an excursion site and a wine shop Vinia situated on Šapić family farm.
It is located four kilometers from Bjelovar city in the direction of Đurđevac. The precise location of this family farm is a small suburban place named Puričani.
Visitors can enjoy the ambiance of a fairy tale. They can also expect a number of different creative programs for standard holiday or active holiday, all held in the idyllic rural atmosphere. Programs include the offer of traditional dishes from this region, tasting of local wines from Bilogora hills, wine cellar tours and terrain horseback riding.
Terrain riding on family farm Šapić – excursion site Vinia
If you have horse riding license, if spending time in nature fills you with peace and harmony, if horses have been your love ever since childhood, we highly recommend this idyllic estate. Horseback riding can be done with or without the presence of the coach, but for the official tourist routes of Bilogora you will be escorted by a guide. For groups of riders and multi-day tours on the family estate Šapići, you will be provided with all the necessary infrastructure (accommodation in double bedded rooms, restaurant, parking for campers, catering on the field).
There is also a riding school for children and beginners with expert guidance provided.
By clicking on this link you can find a brochure with more info about the tourist offer of Bjelovar-Bilogora county and the richness of its diversity. Discover your own piece of green paradise, feel the tranquility and peace under the shade of old trees with the wind in your hair. Later you can invigorate yourself with top quality locally grown food and wine. Many consider this to be the ideal recipe for a summer happiness, far from the summer throngs and the tourist crowds.
Also, do not forget there are agritourism estates with tasty local delicacies, such as family farm and excursion site Mihoci – the door of Bilogora, which await for you on riding routes.

Everything you need to know about the equestrian tourism offer in this county, you can find on this link.

New face of traditional cuisine – a culinary spring tour across Sisak county
WHETHER YOU ARE PLANNING TO WATCH EXHIBITION IN THE CITY OR TO TAKE A WALK ALONG RURAL HOUSEHOLDS IN ITS SURROUNDINGS – SISAK IS WELL WORTH OF INVESTIGATION
'There is no sincerer love than the love of food', this is a conclusion brought a long time ago by the English dramatist, novelist, critic and publicist George Bernard Shaw.
In the spirit of this profoundly true and tried saying, this spring numerous places will open the doors of long forgotten smells and tastes from the old chest of traditional Croatian dishes. This is a great move if you consider the fact that interest for good culinary tradition has never been higher among tourist visitors, and even among domestic population.
This trend is also reflected in the fact that growingly popular culinary blogs, web portals and magazines have started to show great interest and affection for the revival and publishing of long forgotten recipes, many of which end up as most popular recipes of the month on respective web sites.
Following these tourist trends which promote the traditional gastronomy as the key element of tourist offer, city of Sisak went towards the revitalisation of its most tasteful inheritance – the revival of culinary tradition!
DO NOT MISS THE OPENING OF OLD TOWN FORTRESS AND EXHIBITION OF TRADITIONAL DISHES FROM SISAK COUNTY
When?
Exhibition 'In search for the best cuisine – authentic Sisak county dishes'; 23rd of May 2016 in 7pm.
This is a unique exhibition based on the field research about preparation methods of traditional and indigenous dishes from Sisak area. It will explain and present old recipes to its visitors in a fun and educative way, taking them back to past times.
Organisers explained that, to enrich the restaurant offer, they brought these old recipes back into daylight. They are determined to prevent them, and their tastes and smells, from being forgotten.
And for people who decide to visit, we recommend not to miss the essential feature of this area - Nature park Lonjsko polje with its restaurant offer, where traditional dishes are prepared using the original old recipes.
Further on, we bring you recommendations for places that offer authentic cuisine in Nature park Lonjsko polje. Did you know there is a theme pathway in this area designed to be a reminder of the old way of life? It stretches through north part of Lonjsko polje and its life giving surroundings, vineyard hills of Moslavina and river Sava.
Its purpose is to emphasize differences between past and present, because most pathways that once led over the fields do not exist any more, bridges over rivers have decayed over time, main river channels are regulated, but river branches and seducing places near Lonja are kept. It connects two areas in a new way and tells romantic stories from the past, making the way to replicas of frontiersmen's watchtowers where service men spent most of their lives.
HOTSPOTS RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RURAL HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILY FARMS IN SISAK AREA
'Traditions – Čigoč' runs a restaurant with 80 seating places. Experience the ambience surrounded by massive oak tables and chairs and try different traditional dishes from Posavina.
'Traditions – Čigoč' offers ready made dishes like roe deer goulash, fish paprikash and 'posavski lonac'. With each dish we recommend a specialty called 'Čigočica', which is home made bread stuffed with domestic cheese and cream.
'Traditions – Čigoč' also prepares top class dishes baked in 'peka' and different sorts of local fishes among which we recommend carp and perch fish prepared in a special way. http://www.tradicije-cigoc.hr/
'Pansion Tišina' in Lonja is a lovely traditional restaurant surrounded by the most beautiful part of Nature park Lonjsko polje – Lonja river. There are many activities one can enjoy in the vicinity of the restaurant. It is possible to walk around, to visit Nature park Lonjsko polje, or to go fishing. Six very attractive bicycle routes (total 310 kilometers of pathways) connect the Posavina corridor of Lonjsko polje with river Una and Moslavina. Bicycle routes in Nature park Lonjsko polje are easy and pleasant to ride, especially fitted for family tourism and recreation.
ETHNO VILLAGE OLD LONJA
Ethno village Old Lonja - http://www.etnoselo-staralonja.com/o-nama/ - after you have finished with activities in nature you can enjoy the traditional cuisine of this farm in beautiful Lonja. The owners words well describe the atmosphere of the place: 'Lonjsko polje is easy to love, you just need to come here and feel it, smell flowers in the field, pass through the streets of Posavina, have a swim at sandy beaches of river Sava, wake up in dew covered mornings, feel the smell of fish roasted in traditional way, admire the horses in sunset and many more things indescribable with words'.
Lonjsko polje is a cure for the soul of modern urbanised human who has long ago forgotten what it means to be relaxed or how have our bygone ancestors lived. It is a great choice for anyone who wants to experience something different, something more beautiful, something to remember for the rest of your life, something that becomes a reason to always come back to Lonjsko polje and Ethno village Old Lonja.

In the end we bring you some practical recipes and traditional method of drying fish:
Recipe: Carp fish on 'rašlje'
Ingredients:
1-1,5 kg carp fish
Salt
Red paprika
Preparation:
Clean and wash the fish. Cut the carp on the back so you get a big leaf, add salt and leave for a while to absorb. Rub the inner side with red paprika. From willow tree wood make 'rašlje' and stick the carp laterally on top of it. Stick the bottom of rašlje into the ground near the pile of cinders and turn from time to time so the fish gets done from both sides.
Last but not the least – read something about tradition of fish smoking on the attics of Lonjsko polje:
Smoked fish – forgotten delicacy of Lonjsko polje (by Vladimir Pajtlar)
In past times, residents of Lonjsko polje have dried fish on their attics. These were times when the fish was abundant, so not all the catch could be consumed immediately. And refrigeration was not yet available.
Best fishes for drying and smoking are carp, pike and bream fish, between 1,5 and 2 kilograms. Fish should be cut along the back, salt should be added and the fish put in brine for 5 days. After that fish should hang in the attic in cold and airy space. It should drain there for a day. Next day fish should be smoked for maximum of 2 hours. Dry willow tree branches should be used to make the smoke. Fish should be smoked every other day until it has been smoked for a total of five times. After that it should stay on the attic for at least ten days. The color of fish should become dark red. Before preparation skin must be removed. Dried fish can be eaten raw or fried on some fat. Bon appetit!

TransDinara MTB 2016 – three day adventure through forgotten vast lands of Croatian mountains
The most demanding mountain bike marathon in Croatia and in the region which has in its 2014 edition attracted the attention of both the media and passionate cyclists from 9 different countries. This year it shows its true identity and a place under the sun, not hiding from the potential of becoming one of the most interesting MTB events in this part of Europe. A confirmation of this has already come in the form of a team participation of Ivonne Kraft and Peter Vesel, the winners of last year's Absa Cape Epic!
Even with the showing of the first photographs taken when the organizers of this epic marathon loaded with heavy backpacks went for days long exploration of vast lands of Dinara mountain, the teaser to all those who spend more time looking at the screens of their GPS than mobile phones has been launched. For the experienced eye the atmospheric display of wilderness on the border between the two countries was enough to make it shine with curiosity, and when the concept of this competition led the event to the limits of endurance – for those selected few it was point of no return.
photo 1 / research 2013 / author: TDM team
Dinara, a mountain giant, which reigns over the highest peaks in Croatia, has been almost forgotten since the war for Croatian independence, and those times when it stood under the rumbling tanks, trucks and military boots, being shy, like an elephant behind a twig, hiding her beauty from the public eye, throwing Cetina river and its miraculous spring Glavas as baits, in the hope that no one will look up. Years of war have shaped the Dinara in a deserted mountain, dotted with hundreds of kilometers of steep, rough "roads", on which the ravages of time have left some barely visible forgotten trails. By the way, Dinara is one of the last mountains where you can come across all three large European carnivores: a bear, a wolf and a lynx. The organizers hope that there won't be any close encounters with these animals, but will just in case they will pay an insurance policy on your behalf ... just so you could have a colorful paper to show to the three-member welcome committee. J

Even though it had given it best to make things difficult for the organizers to master some of its endless, winding paths, in its first edition of the marathon held in September 2014, Dinara was friendly and good to all those who have decided to get to know it. A huge role in the organization had the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service, a strategic partner of the marathon since its inception, whose teams and vehicles were in charge of the safety of competitors in all those hard to reach areas. It should be also noted that TransDinara marathon was introduced as a pilot project of strategic national Tour de Croactive project by Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (systematic development of active tourism in the service of sustainable and balanced development of the Republic of Croatia). The Ministry of Interior took care of the legality of the border crossing between Croatia and Bosnia, as well as for a secure and safe passage of competitors through populated areas. Croatian Air Force was also involved, with their helicopter crew put on call at a nearby helipad. The last but not the least are the host cities Trilj, Sinj, Vrlika and Knin, which have ensured accommodation for the weary competitors, as well as food and friendly entertainment in the evening. The hospitality of the town of Vrlika needs to be mentioned, too, as it was particularly remembered by everyone. The people of this wonderful, small town in the shadow of Svilaja have offered everything they had, and had even closed the traffic through the town for the the perfect atmosphere of the warm summer evening.
The best input on how it all looked in 2014 is available in this promo video on the official marathon website: www.transdinara.com, where you can also find a photo gallery.

A look at this year's edition reveals the continuation of the aspirations and wishes of the organizers to lead this marathon in a direction of being a real mountain bike adventure for a limited number of individuals and two-member teams.
TransDinara MTB 2016 specifications:
- 3 days / 3 stages/ September 2-4, 2016.
- 226km of trails with 6500m of overall ascent
- number of participants limited at 100
- 5 categories/ individuals (male and female), two member teams (male, female, mixed)
- obligatory stand alone GPS device (even though, the trails will be marked)
- shared accomondation in gyms, food, and transportation provided
- substantial prize money fund (8.500 EUR)
The event starts on Thursday, September 1st, in Trilj were the arrival of the participants is scheduled, followed by dinner and good night's sleep. The next morning after breakfast, on Friday, September 2nd, the show starts!
Stage 1: Trilj - Kamešnica - Sinj (Vrdovo) / Friday 02.09.
Warm-up day, 82 kilometers with about 2600 meters altitude difference, beneath the peaks of the Kamešnica mountain. A rough dirt road cut up with a demanding singletrack descent, steep climbs, abandoned villages, shepherds and sheep. It's getting a taste of everything that follows in the second day. Competitors finish the stage away from civilization, on the mountain plateau Vrdovo, where the camp with all necessary infrastructure will be set up. A calm night under the stars ensures not only an unforgettable experience and a good quality night's sleep, but also the minimum number of kilometers of asphalt on the second day of competition.
photo 4 / under the clouds, stage 1 TDM 2014/ author: Matej Posavec
Stage 2: Sinj (Vrdovo) - Dinara - Vrlika (Peruča)
Royal stage. The essence of this marathon is presented with this stage! The first year, this stage of the marathon had to be changed practically at the last minute due to the extremely rainy summer and evidently unrecognizable trails, so this year it was changed from the ground up. To present it in figures, it consists of 3000 meters of altitude difference in 94 kilometers of pure MTB experience, with all seasons combined, and all kinds of land and terrain; from the Alpine forests to the lunar surface. Halfway of the stage is located only a few meters below the Lišanjski summit, the second highest peak in Croatia, after which the partcipants are awarded with a singletrack descent into the heart of Dinara. After the adrenaline rush, you are left to struggle with Dinara, its steep gradients that force you to ponder over some of your recent life decisions, the vastness which brings a sense of solitude and smallness of our own existence. Fortunately, this stage does not offer a single tree where you could hang yourself, but after 40 kilometers of ego festival there is a view of Peručko lake before you, to which you're guided by an endless descent, helping you to leave a painfully accumulated 1000 meters of altitude in one breath.
photo 5 / the beginning of the stage 2 descent of TDM 2014 / author: Matej Posavec
Stage 3: Vrlika - Dinara - Knin
After the second day of masochism and pleasant atmosphere in Vrlika, the third day brings all the natural beauty of the foothills of Dinara in meager 50 kilometers with 1000 meters of ascent. The amazing sights available are: abysslike spring of the Cetina river, the river Krčić, the waterfall Krčić, and Knin fortress. A steep climb to this thousand year old fort takes you to the finish line... just like a cherry on top! After you cross the finish line the gala lunch awaits you, followed by an awards ceremony, lying on the grass, hanging out, having a cold beer with a view of all mountain peaks which you've passed, your marathon mates saying they're sorry if they made some mistakes, you shake hands and say "all good, I can't wait to come back again!" ...
Registrations are opened from April 1st on: www.transdinara.com. There you can also find all the relevent information about this unique marathon, and for daily updates go to our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/transdinara

The legend of Miljenko i Dobrila!
August, 7 - 11.
The story of Miljenko and Dobrila is settled in the second half of the 17th century in Kaštel Lukšić where two noble families the Vitturis and Rušinićs lived in their romantic castles. Little Miljenko (Rušinić) and Dobrila (Vitturi) were friends and eventually fell in love.
In the meantime, their parents had a terrible fued and decided not to allow their future companionship or marriage. Miljenko and Dobrila eloped and after a sequence of entanglements that only love can produce, their parents gave consent to their marriage in Kaštel Lukšić.
The lovers from Kaštela accepted their parents' will. However, Dobrila's father, count Radoslav couldn't actually accept the fact that Miljenko had won and that he was going to take Dobrila as his wife to their new home – a castle of the noble family Rušinić.
Engulfed by uncontrollable hatred and vengeance, a night after the wedding of two young lovers in summer of 1690, count Radoslav killed his son-in-law with a firelock in front of his castle in Kaštel Lukšić.
A few months after the grievous event, out of tremendous sadness, Dobrila lost her mind, got sick and died. Her last wish was to be burried next to Miljenko at Rušinac, in St. John's chapel from the 16th century.
Their tombstone can still be seen in this church, with the inscription: "Lovers, rest in peace". In Kaštel Lukšić, besides their grave, there still stand the authentic castles of Dobrila (the Vitturi castle, 15th – 16th century) and Miljenko (the Rušinić castle, 15th century) as well as the old church dating from 1530 where the lovers got married.
This legend inspired the authors of a novel, a drama and even an opera.
The opening ceremony of this year's manifestation The legend of Miljenko and Dobrila will take place in front of the Vitturi castle on 7th August at 21:00. A sequence of cultural events inspired with the theme of Miljenko and Dobrila will follow up to 11th August 2016.

We're taking you to Pelješac - An empire of mighty plavac wine variety
From Ston Walls and Ston Salt Works , picturesque Janjina and Trpanj founded on ancient Gradina to Orebić, a city of sailors and captains, Pelješac is a destination of exquisite wines, active vacation and beautiful beaches
From place to place, along wavy Pelješac road, you will meet this peninsula's unique lifestyle, based on blessings of nature. Pelješac people live in harmony with hundred years old tradition of maintaining and cherishing olive groves and wine yards, some of which arose on hardly accessible place, thus testifying of the effort and persistence of these people.
Here, harsh Dalmatian karst gave some of the mightiest plavac varieties. This variety gives the best results on Pelješac, so it is not surprising that it makes 90 percent of total Pelješac wine yard, which is one of the biggest in Croatia.
Due to sun reflection from the sea and rocks, excellent conditions are made for accumulation of sugar in grape, especially on famous Pelješac positions Dingač and Postup, Ponikve and Milij, which create beautiful landscape by descending towards the sea.
Even though, while visiting Pelješac wineries, the owners might seem somewhat secretive karst and wine grape enthusiasts, some of them are famous names that made Croatian and Dalmatian wines world famous.
The best way to get familiar with this peninsula is to take a thematic road ''Pelješac-wine empire'' or Napoleon road 61 km long, which goes through entire Pelješac and is an integral part of roads for active tourism.
STON - A story of salt and oysters
If you are arriving to Pelješac by land, medieval Ston is the first place on the peninsula that you can't miss. You will be impressed by its 5,5 km long stone walls, the longest in Europe.
Solana je i danas aktivna, kroz stoljeća nije mijenjala izgled ni način proizvodnje.
They were built by Dubrovnik Republic in 14th century to protect highly valuable salt works, the oldest in Europe, and some say even in the world. The salt work is active even today, preserving its appearance and production ways through centuries.
But, within Ston Summer many manifestations await you, like Folklore Festival on June 24, International Festival of Orchestras on June 25, St Liberan festivity on Jul 23, Pelješac Wines Night on July 30, Baštadura on August 2, Summer Carnival on August 6, Folklore Night on August 13, Kinookus Film Food Festival on September 8, StonWallMarathon on September 18…
Before you leave Stone visit Lapidarium, external collection of Archaeological Museum of Dubrovnik on ground floor of Ston vicarage.
Prije nego napustite Ston posjetite Lapidarij, vanjsku zbirku Arheološkog muzeja Dubrovnik u prizemlju Župnog dvora u Stonu.
Janjina - Little Paris
By following the road from Ston, across Ponikve and Putnikovići, you will arrive to Janjina in the centre of the peninsula, which used to be called Little Paris, due to its cultural and economic significance. With central place Janjina with Zabrežje village, the municipality encompasses Popova luka and coastal places Drače, Sreser and Osobjava with beautiful beaches.
You will enjoy in excellent dishes based on seasonal ingredients and fresh caught fish, together with unavoidable strong plavac wine varieties of several famous local producers. You will be enchanted by Dalmatian hospitable atmosphere, and if you go on a tour of Janjina along its stone-paved streets, do not miss former Knežev dvor (Rector's Palace), gothic church of St. Vlaho and church of St. Stjepan on Janjina graveyard, which is considered to exist since Roman times.
This summer as well many manifestations are organized for Pelješac people and their guests, so you can feel tastes and scents of the peninsula on fishermen's nights in Drače and Sreser, but also on events in Drače: Pelješka trpeza (Pelješac's table) on June 26 and Wine Night on August 8. Drače is also famous for feast of St. Roko on August 18, while in Sreser there is festivity of Assumption of Mary on August 15.
