Cultural tourism in Dalmatian Zagora is blossoming: All the greater interest in visiting stećci in Imotski!
Stećci (standing tombstones) in Imotski region were listed on 8th place of world UNESCO heritage list
Imotski region has a rich history of legends and myths, beliefs in fairies and other surreal creatures connected to stećci (standing tombstones). Folk tradition has attributed their emergence to surreal creatures of great strength and power. These unique tombstones were often believed to have miraculous, healing properties.
Stećci in Split-Dalmatia County are a specific part of Croatian cultural heritage from Medieval Ages. Due to their significance and value, they are a great contributor to development of cultural tourism in our country. Therefore, plans for development of cultural tourism of Split-Dalmatian County include stronger marketing tools which would include sightseeing of Medieval tombstones that definitely deserve greater attention and thus contribute to development of that region.
It is known that Croatian history dates back to the 7th century, and our country is also proud of numerous historical sites. This fact is proven by Stećci – medieval graveyards, two of which were listed on 8th place of UNESCO world heritage list: Crljivica near Imotski, between Cista Velika and Cista Provo in Split-Dalmatia County and Dubravka – in Sv. Barbara in Konavli, Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
This way, somewhat mystical phenomenon of preserved stećci in our two Dalmatian places is listed with over 70 000 standing tombstones on 3 300 localities in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Monte Negro on a prestigious world heritage list. On this very list 28 necropolis have been included, among which are 2 aforementioned from Croatia, 3 from Serbia and Monte Negro and 20 from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Origin of these Medieval tombs in Croatia dates back to the 12th century, and this way of burying dead continued until the 16th century. Stećci in Cista Provo and Konavli were made of limestone, which is typical for Dalmatia region. Of almost the same kind of limestones standing tombstones were built in other countries of the region, and its specificity is that it can only be found on this area. We can, for example, compare them to those made in Armenia or Ireland, but they are not completely the same. Stećci were cut out of great limestone blocks, then designed and decorated with different kinds of shapes and motifs and inscriptions inspired by religion and everyday life of local traditions.
Locality Crljivica was marked by UNESCO as the biggest and the most important collection of stećci in Croatia. On more western Mala Crljivica there is a small number of stećci decorated in relief. Till today around 90 tombstones of all types have been preserved (flagstones, coffins and ridged ones), among which there are 16 sarcophagi, 56 coffins and 15 tombstones shaped as flagstones.
Legend says that Crljivica originated when people, while escaping the Turks, covered a church located there with a pile of stones, in which valuable church vestments and chalices were hidden, together with one little bell. According to the legend, one mustn't dig there for he/she would become ill and all the crops would be destroyed by hailstorm. The oldest local people say that every year, in the period from Pentecost till St. Anthony during the night you can hear silent ringing of the buried bell.
While travelling along the road from Lovreć to Imotski, after about 5 km, one comes across a necropolis Mramor on Kamenjak locality. Legend says that standing tombstones belong to a wedding procession which was attacked by haiduks before the wedding. Under one of the tombstones, says the legend, rest the bride and the groomsman, under another one stander-bearer and under the third one the groom.
Within the programme of cultural tourism development there are many other cultural-historical sites being revitalized. Those are, for example, Roman roads in Central Dalmatia, used in ancient times by soldiers of Roman legions. It is exactly this project of restoration of net of Roman road communication in Central Dalmatia, which will include renewal and sightseeing of Medieval tombstones, that can lead to greater interest of tourists for cultural tourism in Croatia. And what Roman roads really looked like can be seen on Roman Roads Exhibition, which will be held on April 6 in Archaeological Museum in Zagreb.

Mysterious and irresistible Vis in global cinema-hit “Mamma Mia”!
SEVENTH ART GIANTS AT THE GATES OF CENTRAL DALMATIA – MAMMA MIA, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT WHEN OUR VIS EARNS WORLD’S RESPECT!
THAT DALMATIA IS ONE OF THE MOST ATTRACTIVE DESTINATIONS TO CAMERA EYE, is confirmed by the words of numerous film masters, like strict Hitchcock who was swept away by Zadar’s sunset, which he declared to be the most beautiful in the whole world! Also flattering fact is that, besides all world-famous destinations and potential filming locations, more and more attractive productions choose our coast as an ideal scenery for their movies.
In upcoming thriller with Katarina Radivojević, Hvar could soon be visited by Tom Hanks as well; Klis fort and Žrnovnica have already hosted famous Daenerys and her dragons (protagonists of world-famous “Game of Thrones”), while legendary uskoks rushed through our heroic town Sinj during filming of documentary-feature film The Age of Uskoks in autumn last year! Submarine of famous Jacques Cousteau circled around Hvar, Vis and Biševo waters during filming of great movie “Odyssey” – about the life and work of this legendary explorer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH9BMK1bIwY
Together with all these intriguing notes, one of the most recent confirmations of film-like nature of Central Dalmatia came from one of the most popular Hollywood motion pictures – romantic musical “Mamma Mia 2”, spiced with great hits of legendary ABBA, filmed on our beautiful and mysterious Vis – and we cannot wait to see its world premiere!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtZCFy4vIqY
VIS IN A ROLE OF GREEK ISLAND. Mysterious an irresistible Vis, for almost half a century isolated as a military island, turned this fact into its advantage. Its secludedness from frenetic everyday life and truly intact nature, are real treats for those in search of Robinson tourism, and it also caught the eye of Hollywood producers who wisely recognized Vis’ potential for a role of Greek island, where first sequel of this global cinema-hit was filmed.
Great actors as unmatched Meryl Streep, one of the most attractive Bonds - Pierce Brosnan, charismatic Colin Firth, American beauty Amanda Seyfried who excelled in “Les Miresables”… - have one thing in common – all of them were delighted by the beauties of our Vis, and have marked it on a world-famous movie destinations map with their joint performance. Moviemakers on set were extremely satisfied with cooperation of domestic filmmakers, local authorities and people, their hospitality and professionalism which was indeed at the top level.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOz_VmWrdCw
AND WHILE THEY ARE IMPATIENTLY WAITING FOR JULY, when this attractive film will be released, head people of Central Dalmatia tourism don’t just sit back and wait – they have recognized great potential in aforementioned facts and decided to introduce one more attractive note in region’s tourism. In this spirit, intensive effort is being made to open a film office in Split, like the ones already existing in Zadar and Istria. Exactly with this purpose, in late June last year, three-days International Film Convention was held, whose main goal was to promote creative industries, especially movie industry.
Observations about Split having great potential for film setting are, by all means precise, and this is shown by successfulness of materials made there. For example, two-part German crime TV series about detective Branka Marić, shot in Split in 2015, attracted no less than 4,45 million viewers, while Columbian part of the story about General Gotovina was also filmed there. Not only would establishing its own film office contribute to recognition of the destination in this sense, but it would also, according to Joško Stella, the leading man of the County’s tourism, prolong high season, open possibilities for new jobs; and the most important thing, it would attract new and attractive film productions.
We support this attractive initiative, because, what more can we wish to Dalmatia, but to be put in itineraries of not only globetrotters, party lovers, gastronomads, but also the masters of the seventh art! What’s more to say but – Mammy mia, what can we expect when our Vis earns world’s respect!

1715 Siege of Sinj
August 10, 2017, 8.30 pm
SINJ PERFORMANCE
Under cover of August night, when sultry summer days are relieved only for a short time by its fresh air, there are two acts to be played. The first act starts at the Pijaca, the main town square, when the Ottomans conquer the town of Sinj, burn the church down and take the people into slavery. An effective performance is given by the members of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) who, dressed in Ottoman costumes, climb down roofs of the surrounding buildings, in that way faithfully evoking the feeling of panic of the people of Sinj facing the violent enemy.
Riding triumphantly in a coach, Mustafa Pasha Čelić announces in an overbearing manner that the Sinj fortress will be conquered without difficulty, while at the same time the Fortress at the Old Town shelters the people and a handful of defenders, together with the painting of the Mother of God. The second acttakes place at the Old Town, where the Defence Council take the decision to defend their town from the enemy much superior to the mand stronger than them.
The act also shows Pasha’s tent, wild parties and rage of the Ottomans after the people of Sinj have refused to surrender. Several times the Ottoman shave attempted to taketheFortress by storm, but their attacks have been successfully repulsed. After the painting of the Madonna is carried in procession led by Father Pavao, a messengerbrings news: ‘The Ottomans are now in flight! ‘ Sinj camp is thrilled and the grateful people, defenders, friars and officers, standing in front of the image of the Madonna, sing a thanks giving song ‘Oh, the Madonna of Sinj, Holy Virgin…’
Te eighth staging of the 1715 battle and the preceding events is to take place, in order to commemorate glorious defence of Sinj from the Ottoman invasion and a wonderful moment when the Mother of Mercy protected her people from enemy violence. It is a moment which has marked the history and the identity of Sinj, a moment being revived by the heroic Alka and worship of the Miraculous Madonna of Sinj, victory of faith and harmony of the Sinj knights, and hope for the help of their heavenly patroness.

Slogan “You are the writer” that accompanies this project, encourages modern customers to share their experience with others, which is one of the best and most efficient recommendations in era of social networks. Namely, hotel tucked in a city palace, or on the rock above the sea, apart from being a great shelter from chaotic everyday life, is an excellent topic (and real, as modern Internet terminology suggests – envy challenger) for attractive Facebook or Instagram post!

But still, dazzling high prices on international travel sites are a result of one of its strongest advantages – unique location at the very heart of Split old town core is different from anything guests have seen and experienced so far.

STON – HISTORY ON A GRAIN OF SALT FOR BRIGHTER FUTURE!
FACTORS OF TOURIST ATTRACTION. When you have one of the rarest preserved fortification systems that is believed to be the longest wall in Europe, and the second longest in the world (after the Chinese Wall, of course!), wouldn't it be a shame not to make it one of the strongest advantages of your tourist offer?
This is precisely the way leading men of Ston tourism feel, who decided not only to renew their heritage, but to complement it with new programs and contents. This way results of the fight against the biggest problem of national tourism – seasonality, wouldn't be only partial. For a sharp tourist eye there is no doubt here – potential of Ston is too big to keep presenting the sun and the sea as main tourist products, in the presence of impressive walls and wine and gastronomic luxury!
The extent and diversity of this project, called History on a grain of salt, is proven by the colours of its logo, on which every colour symbolizes a specific piece of tourist attraction of this destination (green colour, for example, represents Napoleon' Road and green surfaces, cultural heritage is represented by blue colour, gastronomy with yellow, wine making with dark red and tourism by pink).
Value of this project has been recognized and supported by European funds, while local experts dived into business with a lot of enthusiasm.
Because of this, by March 2019 Veliki Kaštio and Koruna forts should shine in their full glow again, as well as Komarda park and a stretch of south wall of Ston Walls. Ston lapidarium will be renewed, Ston part of Napoleon Road expanded and ''Pelješac – wine empire'' theme road will be upgraded. Furthermore, this valuable cultural heritage will be additionally spiced up with sophisticated wine and gastro offer and special programs.
When we add to all this attractive marketing tools – from city light and Internet advertising, to international tourist fairs and extremely popular social networks – the fastest promotors of attractive destinations, it is clear that Ston has recruited all its tourist forces and that discouraging figures of only 42 days of utilization of local accommodation capacity per year – will soon be forgotten!.
EMBLEMAITC INGREDIENT. In order to become truly recognizable destination and present its guests local history and culture in an interesting way, Ston has, being aware that worthy heritage is not sufficient by itself, decided to breath in - a grain of life! To accomplish this, it used its emblematic factor x, an ingredient that has played a vital role in the history of this destination – and this is, of course, its remarkable salt, so precious in ancient time it was called white gold!
Thus, salt plays the main role in wisely designed program for visitors – Cum grano salis, which can be seen twice a week from June to September. Without any doubt, all those who are interested in presentation of production, harvesting and transportation of salt, building an impressive protection system and artfulness of Dubrovnik's merchants who traded with salt all over the world, will participate in this dramatic interpretation in intriguing ambience of Veliki Kaštio fort, located at the side of Ston Saltworks!
VERSATILE EXPERIENCE. Those who enjoy cultural heritage will attend, with the same amount of interest, another program closely tied to fortification system – night ambience-theatrical (!) tour of Ston sights. Innovative and detail tour of Ston Walls, which includes Veliki Kaštio, Koruna and Podzvizd forts, intriguing locations as Rector's Palace, Bishop's Palace, Main Guard, Placa and cathedral, famous saltworks and dramatized presentation of shellfish farming, is with a good reason called – Secrets of Ston!
Namely, this tour generously offers all its little-known events, legends and hidden places. Before the eyes of even 60 visitors real and fictional characters will come to life, presenting history and former life of this destination – from late antiquity, Nemanjić dynasty and Kotromanić ban, to ties with Dubrovnik Republic.
And as icing on the cake, visitors will be offered traditional delicious refreshment as well as a performance of local cultural association. When we see how much effort and contents have been put into this program, we want to ''teleport'' ourselves to Ston, at least three times a week, and enjoy in this – to eyes, ears and palates – truly pleasant and versatile experience.
STREGHTENING OF CAPACITIES. Ston's determination not to let anything happen by chance, is shown by the effort in educating workers in cultural and tourist sector, and two public debates for wider public whose goal is raising awareness about the importance and potential of cultural heritage. Education for tourist workers is going to be held as carefully designed workshops, which will cover everything – from Ston history and its legends and stories (which will, we believe, be more than familiar to kind Ston's hosts, after they have listened all the lectures) to communication skills and using modern technology in presentation of cultural heritage and presentation skills in serving food and drink! Awareness of the fact that quality offer reaches to local man as a subject in tourism is a strong advantage of this truly ambitious and promising project.
LIKE TRUE NOBLEMEN. Ston attractions in combination with renewable resources, kind, skilful and informed hosts and creative ways of presentation sound more irresistible than ever. When you are able to be proud of specific atmosphere of a Medieval town, walls fortified with forts and towers, the oldest – and still active! – saltworks in entire Europe, refreshing oysters (which conquered even the greatest conqueror – Napoleon!), one of the most renowned wine varieties (legendary Plavac mali), tourist tour that offers the best of the best ; and you manage to wrap it all up in super attractive tourist product…all the chances are that your guests will feel like – true noblemen!
Our impression is that leading men of Ston's tourism were aiming g exactly at this, and to tourist public of the world, it is precisely creative and highly individualised approach to guests what matters the most, together with original and authentic contents. Ston has a trump up its sleeve in all the mentioned categories, so all we can do is wish it a great tourist future!

Glorious Alka of Sinj in Vukovar!
Vukovar, May 6th 2017.
Cornerstones of Croatian history and identity will once again be united on May 6 in the heroic town of Vukovar. The twin towns, symbols of resistance, together revive history by looking to the future.
The 300-year-old torchbearer of Croatian endurance leaves its home, the Alka racecourse in Sinj, for the 4thtime; on this occasion not as a result of a forced centralized political decision, but respecting the will of those which it belongs to – the Croatian people. Alka is a symbol of their victory and unity and one cannot think of a better place for this outstanding celebration than Vukovar, the heroic town which bravely defied the enemy at the hardest moments and stubbornly defended the homeland. Relentless faith and strength of spirit has kept this gem of Danube strong even until today, when the South and East of Croatia, 1715 and 1991, will symbolically unite.
The residents of both Sinj and Vukovar are eagerly awaiting this glorious Alka. The preparations in Vukovar have been going on for some time now and the Alka itself will be held at Županijska Street, spanning from the Vukovar Municipal Museum to the courthouse building. A stand with 4047 seats will be put up for the occasion. Between 11 and 17 riders who participated in last year’s Alka in Sinj will be participating in this one. The final decision regarding the number of participants will be made by duke Ante Vučić who pointed out that the Alka in Vukovar is dedicated to all those who defended the town from the Greater-Serbian aggression, died for the cause, and for those Croatian veterans and civilians who are still missing from the Croatian war of Independence.
The winner of the Alka of Sinj will receive acknowledgements and a gift from the sponsor, the President of the Republic of Croatia Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović. The mayor of Vukovar will present him with a ducat specially made for the occasion; a recognizable symbol of Slavonian tradition and the keeper of cultural heritage. An identical ducat, only smaller in size, will be given to the Alka winner’s squire.
The town authorities are preparing a rich cultural program, while the fact that there are no more available accommodations in Vukovar speaks to the level of interest for this manifestation.
The town of Sinj is also preparing gifts for their hosts: a concert by the Klapa Sinj and Sinj Town Brass Band, as well as performances by the Sinj majorettes. The Vukovar residents will be presented with a rich gastronomical an oenological offer of the Cetinska krajina region. They will also experience Sinj’s uštipci (donuts) and the tastiest specialty of Sinj cuisine: arambaši, carefully prepared with love by the students and teachers of Ban Josip Jelačić Trade School alongside famous Sinj establishments: the Alkar hotel, restaurants Dubrovnik, Ispod ure and Vila Rustika. A good meal should be accompanied by quality wine; the original Sinj’s hrvaština and maraština will be provided by Mladen Mažurin from the Mažurin family farm.
We are happy and proud to be able to witness this historical moment and we look forward to the glorious Alka of Sinj in the Town which “eternally stands proud like its people…”

Exceptional first edition race at ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar!
ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Weekend Hvar
The swimrun season 2017 kicked off with a stunning race and a hard fought battle at the inaugural ÖTILLÖ World Series event at the island of Hvar, Croatia. The Mediterranean setting had all the ingredients to make for a spectacular yet very tough swimrun race.
The 45,5 kilometres long course was a true test, alternating technical trail running with long, challenging stretches of open water swimming in a rough sea.
Reigning swimrun world champions Daniel Hansson and Lelle Moberg (SWE), managed to pull off from the leading pack and cross the finish line as the first team after 5 hours 55 minutes 08 seconds, closely followed by four other teams. Just 15 minutes after the leaders, incredible Annika Ericsson (reigning women’s world champion) and Stefano Prestinoni (SWE), finished as first mixed team and sixth overall with the time 6:10:57! The first women’s team Diane Sadik (SUI) and Charlotte Eriksson (SWE) completed an impressive race and finished 7:37:41.
“This race is just something else! We have suffered today and nothing was for free. It was really tough for everyone and just an exceptional race. With the strong winds and rough sea, the swims were so hard, we spent so much energy in the water to hold course. But the race course fitted us perfectly, we loved the technical running in the hills. It’s unbelievably beautiful!”, said Lelle Moberg after finishing as overall winner with Daniel Hansson, Team Swedish Armed Forces.
The island of Hvar, part of the Croatian Dalmatian islands, is considered one of the 10 most beautiful islands in the world. With its rich cultural and historic heritage, ancient olive trees and vineyards, crystal clear waters, limestone rock and varied terrain, surrounded by the fabulous Pakleni islands, Hvar is the perfect destination for a ÖTILLÖ swimrun race. There is no doubt that Hvar has lived up to ÖTILLÖ's claim of having unique races in unique places!
The 45,5 km race course of ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar was as tough as it gets. The crystal blue sea was agitated by strong winds and the longest swim crossing of 2 900 metres was a true test for all competitors. Just trying to stay on a straight course through the waves and currents, and tackling the cold water for such a long stretch was very difficult.
A big part of the trail running was on technical trails, with a few tough climbs spicing up the challenge. The need to adjust to running in the hot sun (in your wetsuit) and swimming in the relatively cold water temperature, of around 13-15 degrees, added to the test.
Many teams had to struggle to make it in time for the two cut offs. Some had to abandon after the long, cold swim. The top teams pushed each other hard, chasing each other in a tight group all the way to the finish line. The level of competition is mind blowing!
At all ÖTILLÖ swimrun events teams race in pairs. Working wisely with your partner is decisive.
Using each other’s strengths will push boundaries. The team experience is incomparable and can only be fully understood by those who have practiced it, and is part of why swimrun is growing so fast in popularity.
110 teams of two from 22 different nations travelled to Hvar to compete in the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar, a qualifier to the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship in the Swedish archipelago.
The day prior to the race a shorter more accessible race was organised, the ÖTILLÖ Sprint Hvar, offering the same flavours as the longer more challenging race but in a smaller format.
Eight top teams at ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Hvar qualify to the ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship 2017, on 4 September 2017 in the Stockholm Archipelago; top 3 men, top 3 mixed, top 2 women.
