Adrenaline Activities in Dalmatian Zagora - conquer the river…or the mountain!
WHEN WE WOULD CLAIM that our travel itinerary for August does not have Sinj written in bold letters all over it, it would be a complete lie – no, we do not want to give up the solemn spirit of Alka – the ceremonial knight game which includes the euphoria and thunder of "mačkula" (traditional small cannons) , comming at the moment when the "srida" (full center) is hit, as well as the wonderful feeling of peace and communion that invigorates us when we see numerous believers arriving to this heroic town from everywhere , to celebrate the festivities of Our Lady!

Except for the festive events or, as the locals call them, "fjeri", and of course, delicious and lovingly served home-made delicacies, we now have an additional reason to invite you to Sinj – to come and grab a gram of sports adrenaline, all year long!

CONQUER THE RIVER. If you have always wanted to try rafting or sports rowing, according to your fitness level of course, Cetina River is an ideal scene for these activities and you are the ones to dose the levels! For example, if you want a completely tranquill adventure, choose the rowing on the part of Cetina through Sinj Field, as part of the canoe safari.

These are leisure activities suitable for all generations – they do not require any previous experience, special physical effort or skill, while spacious and stable canoes provide guests with a sense of adventure. The rowers mostly relax by observing the surrounding wildlife or photographing it. According to their wishes, they can enter one of the small dead ends of the river, and enjoy observing the swampy ambience, or get off the canoes and explore the river eyot.

It is worth mentioning that canoe safari is also possible on Peručko Lake - explore its coves with a view of Dinara and Svilaja mountains!

If the very mention of the words "relaxing and calm" make you feel like someone hit the snooze button, then a great choice for you is rafting on Cetina, as the experts say, the best one in the neighborhood. Grapple with the river rapids named Z and Javornica, indulge yourself with the unforgettable experience of passing through the small, magical waterfall Studenci… With experienced skippers you will master event the most demanding parts of the river, take a peek at the place where the famous Winnetou movie was filmed, and the whole adventure will remain recorded by the sharp eye of a professional photographer.

And if you want to observe Cetina from a birds' perspecive - we recommend to take the adrenaline bombs such as the zipline and paragliding. While in the first case it comprehends a "flight" over Cetina canyon by means of steel ropes, the other discipline is even more extreme - it is about walking on a rope at a high altitude, usually over a canyon or a chasm. Although you are protected by a security rope during this activity, it really is one just for the bravest ones, and those who have tried it claim that balancing over the source of Cetina in Vrlika, which seems like an emerald&blue eyes, is something else!

IF YOU'D RATHER SAIL THROUGH THE BLUE SKIES, dare to go
paragliding with, and set off at one the best parachuting airstrips in Croatia
– from Greda in Hrvace! The excellent thermal environment allows flying from
early morning hours, and the start, with an accessible approach, is at 820
meters above sea level. Take a tandem flight, or a basic or advanced course, organized by the local Klub slobodnog letenja
(flights club).
FOR MORE MOVEMENT OUT ON THE OPEN, choose hiking, trekking,
or orientation running! This last discipline is particularly beneficial for the
body, because of the active time spent in the unpolluted nature, distant from
the urban environment, and not to mention the aesthetic moment of the
beautiful, picturesque landscape of Sinj and its surroundings!
It requires a collaboration of the mind and the body, as well
as multiple psychophysical engagement of participants in optimal climatic
conditions, and it can be done by people
of all ages and genders, regardless of
their fitness level. As for hiking, Svilaja Mountain and its southeastern slope
Visoka will be a perfect challenge for you, and additionally, you will be able
to enjoy the beautiful view of Peručko
Lake in the Cetina valley and across it, all over to Troglav and Sinj, Sinj
Field and the surrounding mountains, the Dicmanja valley and, finally, the sea and the islands in the distance. The
mountaineering associations of Sinj, Trilj and Vrlika will greatly contribute
to your mountaineering adventure, and we are especially fond of the traditional
winter climb to Kamešnica, organized by the Trilj mountaneering association.
MORE ADRENALINE? WHY NOT! Although we feel that we have given
you quite enough suggestions to actively spend your time in Sinj hinterland,
there are many more options, especially for those who want to get in touch with
their wild side. What do you say about 160 kilometers of exciting off-road
driving in a QUAD vehicle?

Choose from three different adventure levels, and dare to
take the journey through the local roads, rivers, mountain ranges and canyons, oh
and do not forget to spice up the adventurous atmosphere with activities such
caving, climbing and paintball! The none-the-less-adventurous is the photo jeep safari along the intact
nature of Vrlika and its surroundings - feel the pleasure of riding in the
legendary field safari vehicle - Land Rover Defender!

Visit Sinj and hit the centre – new glow of Alka's city
Megaproject Sinj u sridu (Sinj in centre) is designed as an integrated project of renewal and embellishing unique cultural heritage of Sinj. Project, worth 68 million and 114 thousand kunas, is focused on reconstruction, renewal and revitalization of immovable cultural heritage and valorisation of intangible cultural heritage.

Within this project streets were reconstructed, and entire urban city core was equipped. Also, Stari Grad fort was arranged as well as Kamičak fort and a bell tower. Building Palacina was also renewed, which is of exceptional cultural-historical value. Here a completely new, arranged Museum of Cetina region will be located, together with multifunctional hall for presentation of traditional crafts and products. This is especially important for numerous family rural households, small crafts and cooperatives dealing with production of autochthonous products and souvenirs. From now on they will be able to present and sell their products throughout the year.

Significant amount of finances go to theme Sinj Alka – mainly for purchase of equipment and development of new multimedia interpretation forms and centre dedicated especially to this knights’ competition, upgrading of souvenir production and other contents.

They also plan to build Interpretation-educational centre on Sinj hippodrome, on almost 2500m2. Centre is planned as a space where visitors will be able to participate in Alka's horse-riding school, and feel real presence and vicinity of noble horses from Alka's stables at first-hand, and even feel original Alka costumes.

On this project, together with Sinj Town as project holder, another five project partners are involved that are relevant for social and economic development of the region and management of cultural heritage.

Sinj is proud of its efforts in sustainable tourism, constantly aiming to ensure pleasurable everyday life for the locals and attraction and freshness to its guests. This was recognized by EDEN network (European destinations of excellence), which awarded this town with first prize in category ''Exceptional cultural-tourist offer in EDEN destinations''.

Numerous significant cultural-art events contributed to winning this award, together with numerous places in town that are used as a stage for various manifestations. The presence of the spirit of past times floating over Sinj is just fascinating – priceless cultural heritage is not just a look in the past, but a firm base for shiny future.

Sinj Alka – organized in honour of victory over Ottomans in 1715, is a sort of time machine that takes you back to some ancient times where one can hear rattling sables and firelocks, neighing of decorated horses, while proud knights of hawk eye and firm fist throw their spears in the centre, the smallest circle of the metal target; but, there is more to see in Sinj.

The church and a monastery of Our Miracuouls Lady of Sinj is one of the biggest Croatian Marian sanctuaries and it is a host of the very top of Croatian klapa (acapella) singing, on a traditional concert Klape To Our Lady of Sinj. Spiritual acapella compositions of exceptional quality in open space of meditative monastery garden must be heard live.

For their vows, pilgrims will hike the Road of Our Lady of Sinj, along ancient roads and picturesque bridges on the Cetina River, traditional hiking and horse-riding paths near the remains of defence walls, abandoned route Rera, former Sinj rail. Stations of the Cross on Grad fort are unique works of sculpture art and are exquisitely incorporated in ambience of a walkway, surrounded by tranquillity of the greenery.
In Cetina Region Museum and Archaeological collection of Franciscan monastery many priceless historical objects from local finds are on display (ancient settlement Aequum, Tilurium), which testify of early civilizations on this area. Multimedia Sinj Alka Museum (Europa Nostra award winner – award for cultural heritage of the EU) in a modern and interesting way presents specificities of knights’ game, and in gallery Sikirica, apart from permanent exhibition of works of Stipe Sikirica, many exhibitions, literary nights and various cultural events are held.

Kamičak, small fort of star-shaped layout, former watchtower whose clock is the main time-orientation point for all the locals even today, is an ideal stage for cultural evets and concerts like Music Nights. Sounds of classical, traditional and jazz music under the starry sky will most certainly delight you and make you come back the next year as well.

Show The Siege of Sinj 1715 is a historical drama spectacle that takes place on authentic locations and shows events from famous battle in 1715. Do not miss to experience how 700 Sinj’s defenders resisted the attack of 70 000 Ottoman soldiers led by Mehmed-paša-Čelić!

Football is definitely home in Croatia, and you will be reminded of this with football game between Delmats and Romans, designed on the basis of historical fact tied to headstone of Gaj Liberije – ‘kid with a ball’, as they call him in Sinj. The game is actually a comic theatre show, with fictional rules, in spirit of ancient times. In main roles there are emperor Diocletian and empress Priska with their consultants, surrounded by guards and soldiers in their loge. On the field there are musicians, a referee, ten Delamats and ten Roman players, all dressed up in original costumes. Unusual and fun, certainly worth visiting, even if you don’t know what offside is.

S.A.R.S. (Sinj amateur rock gathering) is a festival of alternative culture organized by S.K.U.P. association (Sinj Cultural Urban Movement) for many years. Festival is initiated to promote amateur rock bands from all over the country, but with time, famous both Croatian and international musicians came to perform. With the occurrence of more famous music bands, audience grew as well, so they come not only from towns and places around Sinj, but from more distant places and even from abroad. With musical part, association organizes performances, literary nights, film projections and various activities and workshops. Mark the end of July in your calendar – S.A.R.S. will definitely have one performer according to your taste.

Gljevstock is made for your inner hippy. Conceived as informal music gathering of Sinj’s music band members and their friends, festival soon outgrew its boundaries and continues to thrive year after year. The main goals of this festival are socialising and freedom, bends always play in presentational way, not as a competition. In the spirit of festival, camping and entrance are free, and to organizers, positive reviews are the most important. Pack your tent and check if they’re right.

Sinj Village festival is an excellent opportunity for getting familiar with local products and crafts. Small and medium rural households from rural Sinj area and its surrounding are offered with a precious opportunity to present their traditional high quality homemade products that can’t easily reach consumers: homemade cheese, honey and other bee products, homemade meat delicatessen, wine, brandy, liqueurs, oils, eco-products and so on. Various types of traditional souvenirs are also on display, like hand embroidery, every day and decorative items and natural jewellery – all are a result of utmost care and responsibility towards heritage that is jealously kept, transferred from one generation to another and kept from oblivion. Programme is enriched with performances of cultural-art societies, bands and Sinj’s majorettes. You will leave Sinj with a full belly and full of impressions.

Measureless richness of tradition that is necessary to preserve for
future generations was recognized by Ministry of Culture of Croatia. It protected
rera (colourful two-part singing) as
a cultural heritage, together with annual carnival
customs of villages under Kamešnica led by Grandfathers from Kamešnica, while silent dance, unique folk dance with no musical background has been
listed on UNESCO intangible heritage list.
It’s busy in Sinj for Advent
too, when the cold is chased away with good entertainment and holiday music,
with plenty of good meals and quality drops. As soon as Chrisman and New Year’s
holidays are gone, town keys are handed over to carnival participants, led by
traditional Grandfathers from Kamešnica.
Sinj also organizes Easter breakfast,
pleasant socialising in merry atmosphere of celebrating the greatest Catholic
holiday.

It is hard to single out just one thing that makes the town under Kamičak a magical place – maybe the embrace of mountains, cold river, ash-grey cliffs or magical endless grasslands and meadows of incredibly rich flora and fauna, or even richer cultural heritage? This kind of dedication is nowhere else to be found, such a high level of gastronomic and wine offer, with far-known Sinj’s hospitality – all this is merged into a true idyllic surrounding which will definitely revitalise your body and spirit. Sinj is not just a pass-through destination – thanks to unified and targeted efforts, it has become a very popular destination and you will make no mistake if you make a reservation right now!

5th Carnival festival of the Cetina region
For a long time, Sinj and the Cetina region have been drawing attention with their unique and interesting events, but the carnival festival is surely a class of its own. This year, on March 5th, it will be its fifth jubilee organized by the city of Sinj, Sinj Tourist Board and co-organized by the Cultural Arts Center Sinj.
Numerous carnival groups have the opportunity to present themselves to the general public – the result is a lively, cheerful and noisy procession which, under the multitude of colors, hides the long tradition maintained by carefully and strictly established rules. The masked carnival groups are the best promoters of the carnival customs in our region and after the Three Kings’ Day they head towards the villages and hamlets. Their value is affirmed by the fact that they are included on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list of the Republic of Croatia.

In the villages of Gljev, Han, Obrovac Sinjski Bajagić and Gala, carnival pageants are a unique and original way of depicting ancient customs interwoven with the sounds of the carnival pageant bells and other accompanying rituals. In the municipality of Otok each hamlet has its own masked group (Jelašce, Priblaće, Živinice, Gala, Ruda, Udovičići, and on occasion the groups of Glavičica-Priblaće, Strana with the groups from Ovrlja and Korita), whereas in the municipality of Trilj the carnival groups go to the villages of Grab, Jabuka, Košute, Vedrine, Vrpolje, Čačvina and Velić. The arrangement of the carnival procession is based on traditional rules, not subject to any changes and only men take part in it.

At the head of the pageant is a white carnival pageant group with the barjo and a carnival wedding procession followed by the komedija and a black carnival pageant group. The wedding procession, symbolic of the end of winter and the arrival of spring, used to be led by the first did (an old man), and nowadays it is led by the barjo (standard-bearer).
A pregnant, mannish bride accompanied by the diver (bridesman) searches for the bridegroom which is the main task of the pageant itself. There are also jenge (married women) and the jengije (maidens) as well as other guests – wedding characters wearing formal clothes (folk costumes). The Turk commands the carnival pageant groups making sure that the white and the black ones are never in the same place at the same time. The characters of the Turk and the bula (Turkish for aunt) are associated with the long period of the Ottoman rule in this area.

Without mincing their words, the carnival pageant group Komedije criticizes the current social and political issues while following the carnival wedding procession. The black wedding procession is led by the baba and the did (an old woman and an old man) who are associated with the fertility cult. By simulating an intercourse, they are invoking a better and more plentiful annual crop, yet another indispensable ritual element. There are also žalovice, professional widow-mourners who wail comic and funny slogans.

The most interesting and the most impressive part of the procession are didi wearing sheep fleeces, up to 1.5 meters in height, on their heads and bells around their waists. Didi are dressed in old shabby clothes with colorful fringes sewn on them. They symbolize the ritual age-long battle of good spirits with winter, chasing it away with noise and with jumping. With the loud ringing of the bells they remove the curses from the livestock, which, along with fertility and arrival of the spring, attests to the main concerns of our ancestors.

On February 16th and 17th, Didi s Kamešnice will carry our customs and rich tradition beyond the country boarders – they will be guests of the 24th “Su Carrasegare Antigu Samughesu” carnival in Samugheo, Oristano province in Sardinia. This important visit is the result of seven years of close collaboration between The Alka Knights Society from Sinj and the representatives of the Sa Sartiglia Foundation from Oristano who are happy to pay each other visits during the Alka festivities and Sartiglia, one of the last equestrian carnival competitions in the Mediterranean.

This opportunity was realized with the valuable support of Don Josip Dukić and it is the basis for further cultural exchange between Oristano and Samughea on the one side and Sinj and Gljev on the other, with the goal of more extensive promotion of these unique manifestations. Along with numerous and various local carnival groups, groups from Molise and Basilicata will also take part in the procession.

An exceptionally valuable publication “Didi from Kamešnice” was presented on January 31st in Alka Knights Court. Issued by the Croatian Photographic Union – young people for young people – a visually appealing publication is the result of a series of photography workshops for children and adolescents held from 2014 to 2018 in cooperation with the Didi s Kamešnice association.

With the promotion of the publication, photographs and carnival masks done by the pupils of the elementary school Ivan Mažuranić from Obrovac Sinjski, have also been on display. The main objective – to introduce children to the culture and customs – has been accomplished in its entirety. Cetina Region heritage is enriched and passed from one generation to the next.

It is also worth mentioning the Bajagići carnival group visiting the 25th (February 16th) carnival event, bušari of Đakovo, the largest carnival of eastern Croatia which revives the carnival customs, songs, dances and craziness on the streets of Đakovo.
On February 16th, the 24th „Su Carrasegare Antigu Samughesu” carnival will host our Didi s Kamešnice from Gljev. You can watch this live on https://www.facebook.com/Sardegnalive/

Sutivan - experience the best small borough in Croatia
To be totally honest, all our small boroughs (in local dialect: malo misto) are gorgeous in their own way, but the tourism professionals have confirmed that Sutivan is indeed something special! This year, on the prestigious event “Tourism Days” (Dani turizma), Sutivan was awarded in the category of best authentic seaside destination, leaving behind 20 other small boroughs that came in shortlist. To find out what's new in Sutivan, what kind of valuable projects are in preparation and which are our top suggestions for the most enjoyable accommodation experience and active holidays, stay tuned with us in the following lines!
ATRACTIVE INNOVATION. Sutivan doesn’t intend to stop just at this flattering acknowledgment, which is proven by most diverse projects that will surely enhance and expand this small town’s tourist offer. For example, persons with disabilities are more than welcome guests here - appropriate access points have been designed as part of the most important municipal project, “Open Doors for Friends “ (“Prijateljima vrata otvorena”), which is currently in underway in the administrative segment, for them to be able to visit attractions such as Kavanjinovi Dvori (residential and farm area), “old Brač plastika”, the former oil mill and the cinema, for all the planned contents. Construction work which started in April this year, has been completed on for the extension of the swimmers dock, which now boasts with the Aqualift - intended for facilitating the entrance & exit in the sea for persons with disabilities.
As a tourist magazine, we highly commend this extraordinary initiative, which will make all Sutivan guests feel comfortable there! Apart from the before mentioned Kavanjinovi Dvori, there is also a new nursery in plan, as well as the renovation of the center of the borough and its promenade, as well as the setup of additional features on the beaches. Sutivan will receive an additional dose of luxury - it is intended to build three new high class hotels in the area of 320,000 square feet of land. In all likelihood, Sutivan’s bright future in tourism is at hand’s reach!
SPEAKING OF SOPHISTICATED ACCOMMODATION, you must see Sutivan’s heritage hotel "Lemongarden"! When we typed its name into Tripadvisor's search engine, the results blinked with full 5 stars (totally deserved!) in front of our eyes! Guests, already thrilled by the fact that Brač has its own airport, which greatly facilitated their arrival, experienced a real euphoria when they saw that Lemongarden not only corresponds to everything it is said about the hotel in their attractive promotional materials, but that it is even more fascinating in real version!
One foreign guest made a joke with the metaphor of “amazing grace” (feeling incredible bliss), which perfectly suits everything he saw and experienced there, starting from the flawless elegance and cleanliness of the facility, spacious and modernly equipped apartment, to a relaxing atmosphere, a nearby a park and fabulous, 50-meters-long pool. This hotel, surrounded by bougainvilleas, roses, hibiscus and lemon trees, perfectly adapts to Sutivan's vista, and has its own private beach, and – oh, but of course - lemon based delicacies according to its adorable name - from the exquisite lemon liqueur to lemon jam, which tastes so good that the guests would like to bring it home!
NOW, FOR THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO ADD A SPLASH OF ACTIVITIES, BESIDES FULL HEDONISM DURING THEIR STAY, there are great options for an active holiday here in Sutivan! The combination of excellent cycling trails and the idyllic island setting (not to forget the divine Brač lamb dishes!) thrilled the former mayor of London, and passionate fan of recreation on two wheels, Boris Johnson, who came to visit the borough two years ago and became one of the best & loudest promoters of Sutivan in the world . That all his praise is well-founded, it can be easily understood by all visitors who decide to master the attractive bicycle trails named by the typical local winds - Tramuntana, Maestral, Levant.
In addition to offering great cycling experience in an authentic Mediterranean setting, these trails leads to attractive points that are unique thanks to their plant and animal diversity, or to cultural and historical significance: for example, from the sandy Likva bay, not far from the coast, at 30 meters of depth, you will encounter the submarine site of an antique shipwreck, and you will be led further to the picturesque places of Bobovišća and Ložišća, villages with wonderfully preserved rural features (take a look at the masterpiece of Ivan Rendic - a magnificent belfry from the second half of the 19th century in Ložišća!). And if you want to have a go at the real competition, the XCM "Uvati vitar" race is a great choice for you - choose one of the three interesting tracks which fit your condition level and join this beloved race, which will take place from May 17th till May 19th 2019. In the words of the organizers, in the next year, this race, which significantly contributed to Sutivan's positioning as a bike friendly destination, will be enriched with additional, expanded contents, and we cannot wait to see what the best little borough has prepared for us!
Seget Municipality: Expert's choise for active vacation - with Mediterranean mark!

Along this road, besides walking, you can ride a bike, since it is adequately marked and equipped with useful facilities and contents, while adventurous riders will gladly try tackling somewhat more demanding macadam parts. Apart from enjoying in real Mediterranean ambience you will fell the sense of past times; namely, since it was built (1807) by Napoleon’s marshals, it has changed very little, and if you like sights, make sure you visit picturesque church of St. Ilija from 13th century!
If you insist on sea joys even outside high summer season, you will be delighted by the fact that this area is known for fabulous diving locations and sea waters of exceptional clarity, and underwater walls rich with flora and fauna. Together with numerous fish varieties and impressive lobsters, a rare type of coral is especially worth seeing – red gorgonian – one of the most beautiful in the Adriatic. If you are a professional diver, you can look for it somewhere deeper and on shaded vertical underwater cliffs, and if you direct your torch in its way, you’ll discover that its, what seemed blue colour at the first sight, is actually strong red.
STRAIGHT “A” ACCOMMODATION. Another thing about Seget is - you don’t have to worry where to stay. Whether you choose high quality private accommodation where you will be welcomed by hosts known for hospitality and readiness to help, or contemporary equipped hotels ("Rotondo", "Astoria", "Jadran", "Bavaria", "Viktorija, camp "Vranjica Belvedere", camp "Seget" and apartments "Medena" located near the sea shore) we are sure that you will have more than positive experience. We especially like hotel “Ola”, the newest eco-friendly hotel where everything is subjected to return to nature, and where you can enjoy in healthy LCHF diet! Due to great traffic position, any of these accommodation facilities can be used as a starting point for exciting excursions – set out to national pars Krka and Plitvice Lakes, UNESCO jewels Split, Šibenik and Trogir or even Dubrovnik!

Hvar - destination with an authentic Mediterranean spirit
When thinking about numerous Croatian tourist destinations, your thoughts always wander away to Hvar – destination with authentic Mediterranean spirit, open to tourists from all over the world who come to the sunniest island on the Adriatic to smell the lavender and hear the humming of the sea… and while it was once called Austro-Hungarian Madeira, and then Croatian Saint Tropez, Hvar was and stayed Croatian island with its own identity and a magnet for tourists from all over the world.
Town Hvar is also a world tourist destination that celebrated 150 years of organized tourism this year. Upon founding of Hygienic Society in 19th century, at first called Società Igienica di Lesina, first of the kind in Europe, with aim to obtain everything needed for a pleasant stay of foreigners in this town” a group of local enthusiast set the foundations of modern tourism as we know today. It was one of the reasons why this year Days of Croatian Tourism (DCT) were held in Hvar. This is the most important touristic manifestation in Croatia, attended by all who mean something in tourism. For, if you’re not on DCT, you don’t exist in Croatian tourism!
This year Hvar has celebrated 160th anniversary of foundation of Meteorological Station Hvar, the oldest one in the world with continuous climatological measurements, whose data of beneficial climate were the basis of pioneer initiative of public organization of tourist offer. Additionally, celebrating 160 years since the birth of Ivan Vučetić, dactyloscopy inventor, makes this year exceptional for the town of sun and its guests.
What is there to know about Hvar?
This island has approximately 2726 sunny hours per year. Archaeological findings proved that this was the place where the oldest drawing of a boat in the world was found - dating back to Neolithic! The oldest public theatre in Europe is also in Hvar, founded in 1612. First hotel was built in 1899 and it was named after Austrian empress Elizabeth, affectionately called Sissi. Hvar is the only island in the world with six UNESCO protected heritage goods, the most recent one listed was drywalls. Perhaps the most interesting one is lace made of agave leaves by Hvar’s Benedictine nuns.
Since it has great gastronomy and even better wine, Mediterranean diet of the island of Hvar is also on the UNESCO list. You should definitely try gregoda – simple dish of Hvar’s fishermen made in a traditional way from fish, potatoes, olive oil and onions. To leave Hvar without trying gregoda would surely be a sin.
Through history in Hvar many beautiful works of cultural and historical heritage were created. One of them is Fortica fort, keeper of the town and the port from 16th century. But, today Hvar is the leading place on the Adriatic in active vacation offer, and this is surely what most attracts tourists.
Sailing, kayaking, diving, hiking, cycling, jeep-safari, are only some of the ways to experience Hvar in a different and unique way – full of adventure, sense of freedom, when only the sky is the limit, where you can do it, if you want it.
A grain of salt and a bit of adrenaline…
Cycling roads like tiny capillaries pass through the entire island, and the ones who sensed its pulse at least once, will hop on bike again and try to conquer all the cyclo-roads on this island. Their knowledge and experience can be tested on 13 arranged cycling roads of total length of almost 500 km. If you prefer hiking, then you’re at the right place as well because there are many hiking roads on Hvar.
But, Hvar is interesting for other athletes, so for the last two year it has been a host for swimrun competition, extremely demanding sports discipline in aquathlon category in which pair take turns in running and swimming on roads from 45 to 75 kilometres. This competition, ÖTILLÖ (in Swedish from island to island) emerged as a result of a bet between two young Swedes in 2006. Their extreme attempt from Stockholm’s archipelago, 10 years later, evolved into a new sports discipline.
Hvar is becoming more recognized by top athletes as an ideal place for sports preparations. In October Australian handball national team was on preparations, whose selector is Ante Jeličić from Hvar. Beauties of the island of Hvar, Hvar’s sights, a view form Fortica fort, and 400 years old theatre have left Australian team breath-taken.
Two years ago in Hvar, European Championship Laser Masters 2016 was held. It was a championship of European society of laser EurILCA for yachtsmen over 35 years of age, who are not active in sailing anymore, but their love for the sea and competition still gathers them on championships all over the Europe.
Cycling sheiks in Hvar
That Hvar is a heaven for cyclists is proved by cycling team Bahrain Merida who were enchanted by this island. And while these cycling sheiks, a member of which is Italian cycling expert Vicenzo Nibali, first visited Istria, for the last two years they have chosen Hvar as their preparation place, and they will continue do so in 2019 as well. With these perfect natural conditions and adequate infrastructure for cycling, it has proved to be an excellent choice for training camp. Cycling events, together with other sports events contribute to the image of a destination as an ideal place for active vacation.
After New Year’s Regatta, running for fun
This year as well, from December 27 – 31 42nd International New Year’s Regatta for Laser, Laser Radial and Laser 4,7 will be held. On the very New Year’s Eve navigational regatta Zdenko Roić Memorial for optimist class will be organized. Next year 9th International Hvar Half-Marathon will take place. As in recent years, it will be marked by a slogan “For run For fun”. Come and join running for fun!
Hvar is a sample example of what we want to do with Croatian tourism – not just to count guests and overnights, but to present quality offer. The island of Hvar is one of the most beautiful Croatian islands where quality has arrived through sustainability, preservation of the existing offer, primarily of historical monuments and culture. Hvar has become a year-round destination.

Active vacation with powerful scents of pines and Brač's stone
Unique and recognizable by its white stone, but numerous artists as well- writers, poets, painters and sculptors, who lived there and created some of their finest works, the island of Brač is a tourist mecca and one of the most beautiful islands in Dalmatia. Miljenko Smoje, one of the most famous Croatian journalists, writers and script writers used to live in Milna. Authentic narrow streets of this place and the lifestyle of small Dalmatian place inspired him to write one of the best scripts in Croatia – Malo misto (Little place) which was a basis for filming famous television series, popular and interesting even today.
But, that's not all! Brač is world-famous for its glamorous Bol that attracts attention of tourists at any time of year, therefore in preseason as well, when visitors are offered with various possibilities for active vacation.
Cycling mecca for recreationists
Whether you choose to spend your free time in walking across this beautiful island, driving a car or riding a bike, you can't be wrong. Nevertheless, it is exactly the beauty of cycling on this island that has been recognized by cyclists from all over the world. Bol has become a cycling mecca of recreationists, but also for professionals as well, who will participate on exquisite sports-tourist event – cycling race of World cup XCM – Bluesun Epic Race.
The race it will be held in Bol in 2019 and 2020. This respectable sports-tourist event will be organized in cooperation of Bol Municipality and Tourist Board of Split-Dalmatia County. It is TB Split-Dalmatia County that co-finances all cycling races on County's area that have attracted tourists' attention, so this form of tourism has become the fastest growing tourism branch and has also led to development of the entire destination.
Synergy of man and nature
If you are eco-friendly then our recommendation is to take part in action of underwater cleaning in spring, traditional Labor Day cross, surfing competition or some other sport-tourist events.
In June do not miss WTA Croatia Bol Open, ladies’ tennis tournament held in beautiful, picturesque Bol. Apart from top tennis, Croatia Bol Open positioned the place as a phenomenal lifestyle destination. Performances of international music stars are a guarantee for exquisite entertainment for visitors of tennis tournament and one more reason for coming to Bol.
If you want to take a walk in Bol’s surrounding, you will be breath-taken by magnificent vineyards. There a wine grape is grown of which wine is made in awarded Stina winery. Is there a better image than synergy of man and nature in that divine drop of – wine that caresses your palates? Stina wines will arouse all your senses and you will come back to Brač just to enjoy pošip, plavac mali , vugava or opol wine varieties. People on Brač are great wine lovers, and this is visible if you take a look at small stone houses off which almost every has a small wine cellar. Welcoming hosts will surely invite you for a glass of this intoxicating drink and tell you some of the island stories on the occasion.
Come to Bol. You are invited by its residents. Get familiar with place both picturesque and elegant in spring, because it is exactly during this season that you can experience it in all its fullness and soak up all the scents of nature and white stone.

Traditional Hand-Wheel Pottery in Potravlje
Traditional hand-wheel pottery-making in Potravlje has been only preserved in this village near Sinj, in the Municipality of Hrvace, whereas in the last few centuries many other villages in the Cetinska Krajina Region were known for cultivating this ancient skill. Up to the Second World War, there were around fifty families involved in pottery-making in the Cetinska Krajina Region, out of which around twenty of them in Potravlje.
The potters from Potravlje, or, as they are usually called in this region, bakrari (derived from a local name for a traditional earthen pot, bakra), used to supply the whole Cetinska Krajina Region and greater Dalmatia with their products.
Up to the present day, they have sold their products at fairs in Sinj, Trilj, Zadvarje, Vrlika, Metković, Benkovac, Split and elsewhere.
Apart from traditional pots, new types of pots are made nowadays, for instance, amphoras (for tourist purposes), flowerpots or pitari, and various miniature traditional pots sold as souvenirs. In ethnologic terms, a pottery-making tradition in Potravlje is categorised as hand-wheel pottery, where the hand wheel concerns a special kind of a small, low potters's wheel which the potter turns with one hand, unlike the foot wheel consisting of two wheels joined by a metal axle, where the potter turns the lower wheel with his foot.
It is generally considered that hand-wheel pottery dates from prehistoric times, and in our region from the 4th century B. C. In most of Europe, this type of pottery disappeared a long time ago, having been replaced by foot-wheel pottery.
Up to this day, the craft of pottery-making has been only preserved in two families in the village of Potravlje – the family of Jure Knezović (1933-2012), where his sons Ivan (b. 1962) and Pile (b. 1965) have carried on the tradition, and the family of Jure's brother Dušan Knezović.

The festival of "šalša" and salsa in Kaštela
Sep 1 2018
The beginning of September (September 1st) is the best time to enjoy ripe tomatoes and the captivating South American rhythms of salsa. The Festival of šalša and salsa is a unique event in Kaštela organized for the 8th time by the Kaštela Tourist Board and the Society Šušur at Igrišće in Kaštel Štafilić. It's an opportunity for everyone to try to cook the šalša and dance the salsa.
Kaštela
The town of Kaštela is located on the coast of the Bay of Kaštela. It has over 40 000 inhabitants, and it is the second largest town in the Split and Dalmatia County. It stretches over the length of 17 kilometers. Our town is specific because of the fact that it developed around 7 settlements (Kaštel Štafilić, Kaštel Novi, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Gomilica and Kaštel Sućurac) or around castles. Each village has its own particularity merged into character of this part of Mediterranean. Radun and Rudine emerge in recent years as the two new smaller centers.
The eastern part of the city is a little industrial center. Cement factories, a steel mill and many shopping malls are situated there. Agriculture based on crops traditional for this region is developed in the Field of Kaštela an on the slopes of Kozjak. Growing of olives, grapes and cherries flourish in the recent times. The western part of the town is more tourism- oriented. This is the area with most accommodation capacities: tourist apartments, rooms, camps and hotels.
There is a newly built Marina Kaštela in Kaštel Gomilica capable to accommodate large number of private and charter boats. Kaštela is of the places with the best traffic infrastructure. We have an international airport Split – Kaštela, a railway station at Kaštel Stari, and access to Split – Zagreb highway at Prgomet and Vučevica.
There are many organizations and institutions which enrich cultural life of the town throughout the year. The Museum of the town of Kaštela found its place in the Vitturi castle, and an exhibition room in onetime bishop’s summer residence in Kaštel Sućurac .
Visit the Trilj Region Museum
Trilj heritage museum was found in 1996 for the purpose of presentation of artifacts from nearby archaeological site (Roman legionary fortress Tilurium). Along with archaeological artifacts in a part of the museum ethnographic collection from Trilj and surrounding area is presented.
The Regional Museum of Trilj collects, explores, preserves and documents cultural heritage from the Trilj area presented through archaeological, ethnographic, cultural, historical and numismatic collection. Archaeological collection is classified in the chronological order into departments Prehistory, Classical period, Medieval period.
The Trilj Region Museum is an important focal point for the archaeological and ethnographic heritage of the immediate vicinity, and it is engaged in the research, purchase, documenting, preservation and presentation of its finds to the public. The museum includes an interesting lapidary arts museum.
Trilj’s most famous souvenir is an intriguing one, a walnut necklace. Traditionally, a necklace of walnuts was presented to a girl by her suitor. By accepting and wearing it, the young lady officially accepted the love of the donor.
Trilj’s gastronomic delights reflect its location and rich agricultural and eco-ethno potential. That Cetina once again plays a role, with river trout either roasted or fried, often after being covered by corn flour. Other specialities include Koštradina (smoked and dried lamb) and Pulestar (young rooster cooked under a Dutch oven).
The small town of Trilj is a pleasant 50-minute drive from Split and a world away from the bustle of the city. It is one of Dalmatia’s most interesting and lesser known destinations, a place of Roman heritage, adventure sports, impressive fortresses, agro-tourism and great food.
Given its location to the Cetina river, which has played an important role in the town’s history, it is perhaps not surprising that the Romans based themselves there to oversee the movements up and down the nearby river. The archaeological site of Tirulij and the Roman legion camp dating back to the 1st centuryand covers a 12 ha. area, part of which is covered by the village of Gardun.
Like everywhere else in the region, Trilj has endured a turbulent history, and attack and occupation were the norm in Dalmatia throughout the ages. One of the benefits for the modern tourist is the string of impressive fortresses dotted around the region, and the eleven fortresses on the Cetina each have their own individual splendour and legends. If you only have time for a couple, Nutjak and Cacvina are both accessible from Trilj
More interesting for the adventure tourist is the rich choice of activity available. Pit your skills against the mighty Cetina with white water rafting, kayaking or a canoe safari, or try some land-based pursuits such as horse-riding, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, trekking or fishing.

150 MILLION KUNAS WORTH INVESTMENTS
Let's go towards Jelsa… This is a Dalmatian place with exceptional tourist offer that will please even the most demanding guests. Jelsa has a long history of being marked on tourist map as a cultural place where everything is focused on having a good time.
Namely, first disco club in former Yugoslavia was opened exactly here. Today Jelsa is nautical-sports-recreational destination, and in last 5 years busy local managers have invested 150 million kunas in traffic infrastructure, coastline, sewerage, old town centre and paving squares. Jelsa port has been renewed after 130 years and now has 65 mooring places while sanitary knot with showers is one of the most modern in Dalmatia.
In municipality building there is modernly equipped conference hall for all kinds of business meetings. City Library has also been equipped and renewed according to highest technological standards. Considering that Jelsa, with its surrounding places, is known as significant winegrowing region with high and top-quality wines, Museum of winegrowing is being built in which 6 million kunas will be invested.
ICONIC HVAR WINE – PLAVAC
Reason for this is world famous plavac variety grown on slopes of surrounding hills. Plavac and some other varieties you can taste and buy in wine cellars Tomić, Plenković, Plančić, Carić, Duboković, Pinjata and Huljić.
Whoever came to Jelsa without trying plavac is like visiting Vatican without seeing the Pope. Make sure to try plavac, wine which is included in wine maps of many elite restaurants around the world. Maybe this wine will suit you the most in Ivan Dolac, on whose sunny slopes ripens wine grape. But, if you drink well, you should also eat well. You can taste high quality gastro specialties in beautiful Humac, ethno village with famous gastro excursion site - restaurant -tavern Humac.
If you wish to go a bit further, make sure to visit Gdinj's bays. After these kinds of pleasures, we're taking you to Zavala, a small place where you'll be intoxicated with scents of lavender and rosemary, while your view will be fixed on olive groves.
And while many famous TV and sports people have own houses in Zavala, it has become an unavoidable place for tourists all around the world. You should also explore pebble beaches and crystal clear sea. Soon, sailors will also be able to enjoy in Zavala because nautical harbour is going to be built.
If you want to sail for a while, you must experience Crazy Vessels Race, which has been entertaining both the locals and tourists for years now. All you must do is think of and build as crazy vessel as possible and sail with it from Podve to 2nd bridge, continue to 1st bridge, then go around islet Škojić and back to 2nd bridge. The point is to show tourists old part of Vrboska and Podva.
OLD JELSA TOWN, GRAPČEVA CAVE
All this is beautiful, but the most beautiful part in Jelsa is its cultural-historic heritage. Its Civitas Vetus or Old Jelsa town, Augustine monastery and town graveyard. Visit also St. Marry church, church of Our Lady of Good Health, church of St. Roko and church of St. Mihovil. Pause for a moment and try to go back in some ancient times. Take a walk on Square Croatian National Revival or, as Jelsa people call it, Pjaca.
Visit also Perivoj, i.e. park, one of the biggest and the most beautiful in Dalmatia due to its rich vegetation. Visit St. John Square, the most beautiful renaissance-baroque square. With its surrounding streets it represents architectonically best-preserved part of Jelsa. In old Dalmatian streets houses with renaissance balconies.
WINE FESTIVITY, JAZZ CONCERTS DURING THE SUMMER
And, as it usually is, all ends with a party. As already stated, Jelsa abounds in cultural and entertaining events like Klapa festival Jelsa od Versa, held at the beginning of July, and Jelsa Summer that lasts till September. On Victory Day (August 5) famous cellist Ana Rucner is going to perform.
Municipality Day and festivity of Our Great Lady are celebrated on August 15. The celebration includes church events and fun till early morning. One of the most exciting events is Jesla Wine Festival (August 24 – 25), traditional wine festival where the best Hvar's wines and homemade specialties are offered, with lots of fun, of course.
Those with a bit more sophisticated music taste can enjoy on 15 jazz festivals held throughout the summer within Jazz-elsa. Nevertheless, one of the most significant events is centuries old folk procession Za Križen, protected by UNESCO. It is held from night of Good Thursday to Good Friday.
There are 6 processions that start at the same time from Vrboska, Jelsa, Pitve, Vrisnik, Svirče and Vrbanj at 10.30 p.m. on Good Thursday.
