Sutivan - experience the best small borough in Croatia
To be totally honest, all our small boroughs (in local dialect: malo misto) are gorgeous in their own way, but the tourism professionals have confirmed that Sutivan is indeed something special! This year, on the prestigious event “Tourism Days” (Dani turizma), Sutivan was awarded in the category of best authentic seaside destination, leaving behind 20 other small boroughs that came in shortlist. To find out what's new in Sutivan, what kind of valuable projects are in preparation and which are our top suggestions for the most enjoyable accommodation experience and active holidays, stay tuned with us in the following lines!
ATRACTIVE INNOVATION. Sutivan doesn’t intend to stop just at this flattering acknowledgment, which is proven by most diverse projects that will surely enhance and expand this small town’s tourist offer. For example, persons with disabilities are more than welcome guests here - appropriate access points have been designed as part of the most important municipal project, “Open Doors for Friends “ (“Prijateljima vrata otvorena”), which is currently in underway in the administrative segment, for them to be able to visit attractions such as Kavanjinovi Dvori (residential and farm area), “old Brač plastika”, the former oil mill and the cinema, for all the planned contents. Construction work which started in April this year, has been completed on for the extension of the swimmers dock, which now boasts with the Aqualift - intended for facilitating the entrance & exit in the sea for persons with disabilities.
As a tourist magazine, we highly commend this extraordinary initiative, which will make all Sutivan guests feel comfortable there! Apart from the before mentioned Kavanjinovi Dvori, there is also a new nursery in plan, as well as the renovation of the center of the borough and its promenade, as well as the setup of additional features on the beaches. Sutivan will receive an additional dose of luxury - it is intended to build three new high class hotels in the area of 320,000 square feet of land. In all likelihood, Sutivan’s bright future in tourism is at hand’s reach!
SPEAKING OF SOPHISTICATED ACCOMMODATION, you must see Sutivan’s heritage hotel "Lemongarden"! When we typed its name into Tripadvisor's search engine, the results blinked with full 5 stars (totally deserved!) in front of our eyes! Guests, already thrilled by the fact that Brač has its own airport, which greatly facilitated their arrival, experienced a real euphoria when they saw that Lemongarden not only corresponds to everything it is said about the hotel in their attractive promotional materials, but that it is even more fascinating in real version!
One foreign guest made a joke with the metaphor of “amazing grace” (feeling incredible bliss), which perfectly suits everything he saw and experienced there, starting from the flawless elegance and cleanliness of the facility, spacious and modernly equipped apartment, to a relaxing atmosphere, a nearby a park and fabulous, 50-meters-long pool. This hotel, surrounded by bougainvilleas, roses, hibiscus and lemon trees, perfectly adapts to Sutivan's vista, and has its own private beach, and – oh, but of course - lemon based delicacies according to its adorable name - from the exquisite lemon liqueur to lemon jam, which tastes so good that the guests would like to bring it home!
NOW, FOR THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO ADD A SPLASH OF ACTIVITIES, BESIDES FULL HEDONISM DURING THEIR STAY, there are great options for an active holiday here in Sutivan! The combination of excellent cycling trails and the idyllic island setting (not to forget the divine Brač lamb dishes!) thrilled the former mayor of London, and passionate fan of recreation on two wheels, Boris Johnson, who came to visit the borough two years ago and became one of the best & loudest promoters of Sutivan in the world . That all his praise is well-founded, it can be easily understood by all visitors who decide to master the attractive bicycle trails named by the typical local winds - Tramuntana, Maestral, Levant.
In addition to offering great cycling experience in an authentic Mediterranean setting, these trails leads to attractive points that are unique thanks to their plant and animal diversity, or to cultural and historical significance: for example, from the sandy Likva bay, not far from the coast, at 30 meters of depth, you will encounter the submarine site of an antique shipwreck, and you will be led further to the picturesque places of Bobovišća and Ložišća, villages with wonderfully preserved rural features (take a look at the masterpiece of Ivan Rendic - a magnificent belfry from the second half of the 19th century in Ložišća!). And if you want to have a go at the real competition, the XCM "Uvati vitar" race is a great choice for you - choose one of the three interesting tracks which fit your condition level and join this beloved race, which will take place from May 17th till May 19th 2019. In the words of the organizers, in the next year, this race, which significantly contributed to Sutivan's positioning as a bike friendly destination, will be enriched with additional, expanded contents, and we cannot wait to see what the best little borough has prepared for us!

Five "Must see" tourist attractions of Split-Dalmatia County
Croatia is a small country, but rich in natural and cultural-historic values which are revitalised for tourist purposes. Split-Dalmatia County also abounds in attractions, a consequence of turbulent past, but beautiful nature as well. On this area there is a mountain range, with Biokovo as one of the highest mountains in Croatia. It separates continental features of Dalmatian Zagora from Mediterranean beach ambience. Nevertheless, five the most attractive natural and cultural-historic values of Split-Dalmatia County, which have become tourist products, are Diocletian's Palace in Split, ancient Salona in Solin, Golden Cape beach in Bol on the island of Brač, Paklinski islands near Hvar and Blue Cave on Biševo islet near Komiža on the island of Vis.
Split – Diocletian's Palace
At the very heart of Split there is Diocletian’s Palace, one of the best preserved Roman buildings in the world. Former emperor's palace was built as a combination of luxury villa and Roman military camp, divided into four parts with two main streets. This rectangular building had four towers at its corners, four smaller towers on the walls and gates on each side. During centuries, Diocletian’s Palace was restored, and in its cellars today various cultural manifestations are held. Although today's appearance is different from the original one, its contours are still visible and is therefore one of the most interesting buildings of this type in the world.
Solin – ancient Salona
All Dalmatian towns had turbulent history since the ancient times. In today's Solin, only six kilometres from Split, there are remains of ancient town Salona. It was a metropolis of Roman province Dalmatia. At first, it was a costal stronghold and a harbour of Illyrian Delmats. In history, first mention of Salona dates back to 119 year BC, in times of wars between Illyrians and Romans. Today this archaeological site attracts visitors, primarily with remains of former arena and amphitheatre, palace and baths.
Bol – Golden Cape
One of the most beautiful beaches in the world is the Golden Cape, a beach in Bol on the island of Brač. It is also a kind of a natural monument and one of the biggest and the most beautiful natural attractions of the Adriatic. The Cape stretches out 400 metres into the sea, and it emerged by stacking of small stones from Vidova gora hill, which is the highest peak on Adriatic islands. An interesting fact is that, depending on the waves and sea currents, the top of the Golden Cape is constantly changing. Therefore, not rarely the beach can turn to other side during your sunbathing.
Hvar – Paklinski islands
In front of Hvar town there is a group of about twenty islets and rocks – Paklinski islands. People from Hvar call them also Hvar’s islands. They are interesting because, luckily, contemporary tourist change hasn’t touched them yet, so the nature is incredible. This beautiful archipelago is the place for divers because in its underwater there are various species of fish, shells and other sea organisms. Jerolim, Stipanska, Ždrilca, Vlaka and Palmižana are popular tourist excursion points on Paklinski islands..
Jerolim – named after a missing church in late 15th century. There is also famous and traditional Hvar’s naturist beach.
Stipanska – one part is also intended for naturists, equipped with showers and a restaurant.
Ždrilca – a wooded bay with secluded places for relaxed sea and sunbathing.
Vlaka – a village with a church dedicated to St. Clement and a traditional excursion point of Hvar people.
Palmižana – the most famous Hvar’s excursion point with nautical marina, especially interesting for boaters.
Biševo – Blue Cave
On the east side of Biševo islet, not far from Komiža place, there is a natural phenomenon Blue Cave. Through artificially expanded small opening, the cave can be entered with small boats with paddles, so tourists can visit this extraordinary cave. Another opening is under sea surface through which sunlight penetrates and reflects on the cave walls. This way it gets blue colour, while everything in the sea water becomes silvery. Due to all this, Blue Cave is world-famous tourist attraction. The colour of the sea becomes the most interesting around noon, when he sunlight reflects in its interior the most.
These are only some of numerous attractions and possibilities offered by Split-Dalmatia County, destination that is becoming increasingly significant, not only on national, but on a world tourist map as well.

Hvar has always been a pearl of Croatian tourist offer, recognized for its UNESCO locality and intangible heritage, natural beauties and other specificities, and has always been positioned among top 5 destinations on a tourist map of Croatia. Positive tourist trends continue this year as well, and 150th anniversary of Hvar's tourism is going to be, for many, an additional motif or a new motivation for a visit.
IT HAS COME A LONG WAY since 15 May 1868, when in Hvar Hygienic Association was established. Central festivity of the grand anniversary, symbolically scheduled around this date, will last for even 5 days, while all the events (formal session of Hvar Tourist Board and a special programme on St. Stephen’s square, with gala concert and a reception) are going to have an international character.
During this anniversary year, all attractive Hvar’s locations will open their doors, so seize the opportunity and enjoy in almost kaleidoscopic range of contents!

There are some other anniversaries as well: 160 years of Hvar meteorological station, one of the oldest in Europe, 160 years of birth of dactyloscopy inventor – Ivan Vučeetić; so we can freely say that these kind of anniversaries can be found – nowhere else in the world!
CHOOSE ACCOMMODATION OF ROYAL GLOW. Hvar didn’t set aside visual experience – on the contrary! – so with the finishing of waterfront extension for 45 metres, as well as walking path on the west side of town, it is planning reconstruction of some of its most attractive hotels! We believe that with the greatest pleasure you will stay at the Palace Hotel, which will reach its 5th star, first in Hvar. Its construction was helped by Empress Elizabeth (Sissi) so staying in this renovated facility will actually be – royal!
ENJOY LIKE CYCLING SHEIKS. If you like places with great possibilities for active vacation, Hvar has a trump up its sleeve for this as well. The most recent news is that is simply delighted cycling sheiks – renowned UCI team Bahrain Meridu that estimated Hvar to have the best conditions, of all the other places in the world, for their training camp! Whether you are a professional or just recreational, you will enjoy in mild climate that enables two-wheeled adventure throughout the year, with roads of different difficulty levels that pass through idyllic Mediterranean landscape.
. It was exactly this beautiful ambience that delighted this prestigious team, and they noticed right away that Hvar, with cycling, is also perfect for rafting, canoeing, free climbing, trekking, kayak, sailing, diving and many other disciplines.
They also included enjoying in Hvar’s gastro story in their mandatory activities, what we warmly recommend to you, too! Try wines praised by the most appreciated sommeliers and combine them with excellent delicacies of Hvar’s cuisine, which skilfully blends traditional and modern. Get a few bottles of healthy and tasty olive oil, whose production lasts for incredible 2400 years. Do not miss to visit traditional villages, picturesque vine yards and lavender fields!
Experience Hvar in a manner of those who recognize good quality and don’t ask for price and you won’t miss anything of the magnificent experience of staying in this town. Although it celebrates 150 years of organized tourism – bright and diverse tourist future is yet to come.

5 reasons why Dalmatian hinterland is summer top destination!
DALMATIAN ZAGORA – THE NEWLY DISCOVERED ENTERTAINMENT, ACTIVE VACATIONS AND ATTRACTIONS EMPIRE!
THE FLOURISHING OF TOURISM. The leading people of Dalmatian tourism have realised long ago that Dalmatian Zagora is the undiscovered gem of the region – and rolled up their sleeves!
They introduced a new concept of bycicle routes to this intriguing area of beautiful pristine nature, bringing local specialties to their guests' tables, and moving klapa and sophisticated blues sounds to the town sqares. Apart from the tastily decorated apartments, they welcomed their guests in the increasingly popular luxury homes with swimming pools, and all in all, offered a top-notch service. Read our article and find out why precisely Dalmatian hinterland, tucked away behind the buzz of Split, caught our attention – join us in visiting Dugopolje, Klis, Vrlika, Sinj and Trilj!
- UNIQUE GASTRO EXPERIENCE. Understandably, when it comes to their visit to Dugopolje, gastronomads will firstly choose the treats for the palate! And is there a better idea, than the prosciutto that won numerous local gastronomic contests? The specific taste and the uniform reddish color of the champion delicacy creatively named Smjeli (eng. The Brave) are the result of the strong Dalmatian bura associated with mild exposure to smoke and drying in a natural way.
Check out why this prosciutto won so many gastronomic golden plate awards, and should you prefer some other trophies – the sports ones! – you shouldn't be dissapointed as well! Dugopolje offers a handful of tournaments and races where you can have loads of fun as a spectator or even as a participant!
On June 11, don't miss the Dugopolje Grand Prix - 3rd international road bicycle race organized by cycling club "Marjan" from Split, as well as athletic race at 21 km – the 2nd in the row Dugopolje semi-marathon in September! The fans of the bocce ball tournaments will be thrilled with the 2nd International Bocce Tournament Koprivno 2017, organized by the bocce club „Sokol“ from Dugopolje, while lovers of American football will gladly visit Growth of a game camp (4. – 06.08.). Not a sports fan? You can go shopping at the outlet stores of the Podi Economic Zone, or see the truly wonderful natural phenomenon – Vranjača Cave!
2. THE THRILLS OF TRILJ. A new attraction for lovers of sophisticated music proves that Dalmatian hinterland has a truly quality tourism offer. Thrill Blues Festival (July 14) at the Trilj city park is an epitome of a well-known Latin proverb: nomen est omen – according to the lineup, it sure will be quite exciting! Trilj and Sinj blues forces – „DBLUZ“ and „Ozone“, Eric Sardinas & Big Motor from LA, "Black Mountain" from Kotor, Rijeka's guitarist Hal known all over the world, and the „Sunnysiders“ - band of the artistic director of the festival - musician Boris Hrepić Hrepo, guarantee a top portion of blues!
But, the Trilj novelties do not end here - in June there is also opening of the reconstructed Stari most (eng. Old bridge), the former iron bridge whose construction began in 1878 under the watchful eye of the emperor Franjo Josip I., and the launch of the Cetina beaches project is also expected! If you visit this intriguing place, expect some legendary attractions – both tasty ones (Days of Komin, Pura and Brozin, Gastronomic Folk Festival – July 27) and those to suit all tastes (the indispensable Feast of St. Mihovil, September 29).
There is also a number of possibilities for lovers of nature, adventure and adrenaline (from QUAD adventure, much-adored rafting, kayaking and canoe safari on Cetina river, to the great bicycle tours that will bring you closer to the 600 years old watermills - Grabske mlinice, Kamešnica mountain and Village of Voštane!).
3. WELL-KNOWN BRANDS OF KLIS – THE TASTIEST LAMB DISHES... AND GAME OF THRONES! No fan of the planetary popular „Game of Thrones“ series, would fail to recognize in Klis one of its most emblematic filming locations – the ancient Meereen! Resorceful guides of the „Game of Thrones“ thematic tour will make sure that you don't miss a single detail relevant to the series, and the rocky building located on the very tip of the abrupt and from all sides inaccessible gorge between Mosor and Kozjak, will reward you with a magnificent view of Split and Dalmatia!
The authentic impression of old times can be best experienced during the scenic spectacle „Battle for Klis“ (end of July), but this is merely the only event worth visiting - enjoy the performances and concerts of the Klis Cultural Summer, especially the traditional multipart (klapa) singing! You will soon discover why Klis is much-adored by gastronomads (try its traditional dishes like top-quality lamb, uljenak, lentils, octopus and beans stew!), and by adrenaline enthusiasts too – it hosts two attractive cycling races - the Grebbening and the XCM Atrium spring trophy!
4. VRLIKA – THE PLACE OF THE MOST BELOVED OPERA HERO... AND OF THE TASTIEST FRIED PASTRY IN THE WORLD! The picturesque Vrlika, marked by the mountain, the Cetina River and Lake Peruča, has managed to unite such peculiarities in a relatively small space! It is much loved for its numerous active vacation possibilities - biking, riding, jeep safaris, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, hiking, trekking, hunting and fishing – and it will be especially exciting in June for its unique two-day bike tournament - Camping & Biking Vrlika 2017!
Neither the lovers of sightseeing will be dissapointed here – they will be interested in taking a tour of the Church of St. Salvation (Cro. Sv. Spas) with the oldest bell tower in Croatia (9th century), the archaeological site of Koljani and the Česma from the time of Emperor Franjo Josip. Precisely this is a place of staging the famous „Ero from another world“ opera every July, about a cunning serf who manages to outwit two Turks. This opera over time became a trademark of Vrlika and its ambassador around the world, and it is an incredible experience to watch it in its natural environment! The same goes for the impressive Vrlika silent circle dance, a part of the UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage, but also for the - traditional fried pastry (uštipci)! Do not miss the International fried pastry competition in August, and make some pleasant gastronomic memories! An excellent choice of all these attractions will be available to you during the The evening of Singing, Dancing and Folk Costumes (July 22), while the town atmosphere is definitely most cheerful on October 7 (the Day of the City and the Feast of Our Lady of Rosary).
5. SINJ – HEADING TO HEROIC CITY THIS SUMMER TOO. Sinj is simply irresistible - both to the eye and ear, to the heart and soul – and to the palate too! The city which had ice cream on its menus back in 1838, enchants its visitors with the sophisticated blend of the Mediterranean, Oriental and continental cuisine – and not just gastronomads!
Who could resist the famous arambaše, or delicacies like fried frogs, freshwater crabs buzara, cetina trout, paired with Sinj wines – hrvaština and maraština? And, what is even better, these specialties are the tastiest part of the most celebrated and beloved Sinj manifestations, hugely visited despite the unbearable summer heat – the Sinj Alka and the feast day of Our Lady!
Although for most people these two events are a reason enough to visit this truly special city, many of them also want to take a tour of the Museum of the Sinj Alka, and during the rehearsals preceding the main competition, the city has about 40,000 visitors! Those looking for meditation and peace will gladly visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sinj as well as new thematic trail towards Our Lady's city. It is hard to believe that the quiet and traditional Sinj has a wild adrenaline side, but there you can also go horseback riding, paragliding, enjoy the attractive biking routes or go for a QUAD adventure!
The city also has a sports aerodrome, visited by numerous sailors, sky divers and modellers. There is also a number of competitons – from the „City Challenge“ and „Cetina Adventure“ race (June 3), to the 5th „To the source of Cetina“ („Do izvora Cetine“) bycicle race (June 11), National Sailing Championship (July 2-9), Sinj Air Show (August 19) and the Traditional International Galloping Races in September.
Sinj thought also of music lovers – they will surely enjoy SARS - Alternative Culture Festival (July 21 and 22) and Gljevstock on June 3 - a festival of music, love and socializing! And for July 7, the heroic city has prepared a real treat - the sophisticated rhythms of top musicians - the Sudar Percussion ensemble!
Still in doubt that Dalmatian Zagora can be really exciting? Summer 2017 is a great opportunity to give it a chance to prove you're wrong!

It reaches Supetar through Mirca place, along wide macadam only a few metres from the sea; there it turns back to Mirca, but this time it turns south and ascends through Olive roads to Donji Humac. Through Nerežišća it goes up to Brač’s highest point – Vidova Gora where you can enjoy in beautiful view of Hvar, Šolta, Vis…all the way to Italy! It goes back to starting point in Bol along the coast, through Murvica and by Golden Cape beach.
You will ride ALONG THE ROADS OF BRAČ’S WINEMKERS if you dare to take Plavac Mali road! Combined, hilly, circular, 44 km long road starts from centre of Bol along the waking path and across Golden Cape beach, further to Murvica. It continues to west through vineyards of Plavac Mali to V.Farska. Then serpentines begin, leading to deserted hamlet Obršje. The road then turns east through pine wood and, just like Pinija road, it takes you to Vidova Gora peak with a beautiful viewpoint. Across Vidova Gora plateau it leads to airport and descends down the state road back to Bol, where it ends.
Ružmarin (Rosemary) road is 19,8 km long with few ascends. It goes east form Bol centre to Dominican Monastery, and then you will ride on macadam to east, through olive groves and wine yards to the very end of the road. There is a U-turn that leads back to Bol, along the old roads in Murivca direction, and back along the walking path to Bol centre.
ELEGANT SPORT IN ELEGANT AMBIENCE. Bol strives to elegance in everything (just think of its visual identity and Golden Cape beach which is one of the most memorable symbols of national tourism!) so it is not surprising that white sport – tennis, returned there! WTA 125K tournament will hopefully return Bol its former glory as one of the most attractive tennis destinations, and next year it will be held from 4 to 11 June. With young tennis hopes and abundance of additional activities like attractive hotel accommodation and numerous opportunities for enjoying in sun and the sea in peak season, Bol has all the chances to become Croatian Saint-Tropez!
A CENTURY LONG WINE TRADITION. At the very centre of Bol winery Stina is located. It dates back to 1903, when winery collective was established to serve the needs of Bol residents. It is known as one of the most modernly equipped wine cellars in Croatia! If you are a wine enthusiast we recommend tasting new wine - Stina – made of authentic wine varieties – Pošip, Vugava (white wines) and Plavac Mali (red wine)!
BOL IS EQUALLY LIKED BY ALL. When Mrs Valentina Palajsa, an accountant from Karlovac Technical School, booked her accommodation in Elaphusa hotel, she didn’t even dream of being awarded as 100 000th visitor! With record-breaking 100 000 visitors in only one season, Bol really outdid itself. In October this was celebrated and special recognition awards were given – to mark the best season ever. Guest structure was also interesting – Germany, Scandinavian countries and France accounted for 83 000 - 86 000 overnight stays, followed by Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and Great Britain! Therefore, we can conclude that this is universally likeable destination and what other to wish but -to keep up with good tourist achievements!

Destination worth visiting – take a boat ride or cycle through Sisak and it s surroundings
Did you know?
During the 18th and 19th century Sisak was the largest Croatian inland harbor, and river Kupa hosted up to thousand ships.
The first river steamboat in Croatian history was Sloga from Sisak.
The first Roman emperor Augustus, who conquered Segesta, issued a proclamation to conduct the population census, due to which Mary and Joseph went from Nazareth to Bethlehem.
The oldest football club in Croatia was established in 1906 in Sisak by the name of Segesta.
At the estuary of Kupa into Sava, proudly stands the witness of the most important Croatian victory over Turkish invaders in 16th century - Old Town fortress.
The first railway line in Croatia was built between Zidani Most and Sisak via Zagreb.
Journey through Sisak-Moslavina County
We have visited the city of Sisak, a historic city on three rivers and its marvelous surroundings. City is bordered by the dense forest at the edge of which you are calmly greeted by the magnificent Old Town. It gives you a warm welcome and reveals a wealth of historical heritage, in the irresistible whirl of miraculous nature.
City of Sisak owes its unique position to three rivers: Kupa, Sava and Odra. Kupa is the ultimate symbol of Sisak and also a stage for numerous events throughout the year. There are few cities in Croatia whose inhabitants can pride themselves with the fact that river flows through the city center where you can swim, paddle, dive, or take a ride on a boat or ship. You can find out more about the secrets of Kupa river in this article.

But let's start from the beginning. We started the journey with the visit to village Krapje in the heart of Lonjsko polje nature park.
We are thankful to professional guides from the nature park who gave us a lecture about this unique area.
Birds, flowers, sandbanks and traditional wooden houses form one of the most picturesque landscapes in Croatia, it feels as if we wandered into one of the fairytales from Ivana Brlić Mažuranić or H. C. Andersen.
Lovely village of Krapje is rich with valuable traditional architecture of national significance and the only village in Croatia with the status of architectural heritage site. Since 1995, it has become a tradition to celebrate the day of European heritage.
One of the things especially interesting to us was the traditional house construction from natural materials (oak), perfectly integrated into natural surroundings. Diligence, craftsmanship and modesty that draw its roots from poverty of older generations, preserves the heritage of this region in a special way.
Lonja Field – take a boat ride through the natural paradise
After a tour around the village and around the soft sandbank of river Sava, we were taken for a ride with solar boat along the nature park Lonjsko polje.
The topography of this area was shaped by the river Sava throughout number of years. It has shaped the coastline, creating an unique landscapes which are enjoyed today by the visitors and residents of this area. If you want to know more about the old way of life in this area, visit the specially designed theme pathway that connects the northern part of Lonjsko Polje with Moslavina wine-growing hills and Sava River.
So we found out that Nature park Lonjsko polje contains one of the largest complexes of naturally preserved flooded lowland forests in Europe and beyond. Animals, plants and people have been living here for centuries in a happy symbiosis. And everything gives you a feeling of tranquility and peace. It almost seemed incredible that we left a bustling metropolis barely an hour ago.
One of the characteristic trees in this ecosystem is famous "Slavonian oak", well known in Europe for its quality. Of many plant, fish and animal species, we must mention storks, the greatest attraction you will be able to see up close, if you visit the village of Čigoč.
This pearl of Croatian heritage is located on the right bank of Sava river, along the river branch called Silence (Tišina). Due to the large number of nests on wooden roofs of Posavina houses, Čigoč village was proclaimed the first European village of storks in 1984. And storks love best to nest exactly in Čigoč, given the fact that here they nest 3,8 chicks per pair on average!
Since the weather served us well, we could see the fairy-tale ambience and enjoy the utter silence disturbed only by the sounds of birds. Trees and wooden houses, flowers and river nearby, have formed the peculiar composition of colors, sounds and smells.
The river lured us to swim. Sandbanks called us to stretch our towels on them. But we had a lot more places to visit.
Ethno village Old Lonja - one of the most beautiful destinations of our journey
After Krapja, we arrived at the ethno village Old Lonja. There we were blinded by hundred shades of green, something that can't be seen on streets of Zagreb. We were thrilled by the harmony, peace and quietness of this rural household, a place that has everything you need for the ideal vacation in nature.
Friendly hosts have greeted us, offered us wine and world-class liquors, roasted fish and local meat, which catapulted us into orbit of gastronomic enjoyment.
And tempted us to stay there a day or two or longer. (or until they send us away).
If you are looking for a rural household with affordable prices but incredible natural beauty, charm, natural harmony and fine food, be sure to visit this farm. It is just an hour away from Zagreb, and hosts can organize tours on demand and provide you with accommodation.
We moved on towards the ethnographic collection of Sučić family. Invigorated by local food and very happy, we marked the Old Lonja in our excursion schedule as a must see destination for the future.
Ethnographic collection of Sučić family
We visited the ethnographic collection of Sučić family which originated from preserving and collecting traditional objects and today has about 700 different items related to life and economy of this part of Posavina. We sow a real small ethnic treasure; from woodworking tools, farming tools, tools for fishing, transport vehicles, to various practical items related to daily life in the household. Folk costumes, towels, souvenirs, everything is created from natural materials collected or made by the family for years, and their impressive collection has been added to the list of Croatian cultural heritage.
Traditions Čigoć
foto: Tradicije Čigoć
We have also visited the famous Traditions Čigoć, another tourist attraction in this area. It is a well known for its traditional dishes from Posavina, of which we recommend their deer goulash, fish paprikash and "Posavina pot". With each dish they include special delicacy "Čigočica" (flatbread from the bread oven filled with homemade cheese and cream).
It is customary to hear some stories about tradition of river fishing from the hosts while tasting the carp and perch fishes prepared by their own recipe. Uniqueness of this place has been discovered by the campers, and we have unanimously agreed that they could not find a better place for absolute rest.
Sisak city - unusual and unconventional urban area that is easy to love
We came at the start of the three-day event, well known as Kupa nights, of which you can read in more detail on this link. We were taken on a guided tour (organized by the Sisak Tourist Board) through the city. The city is full of greenery, on each step you can see magnificent trees, parks and flower beds.
Kupa nights have certainly taken our full attention. The city was all about the boats, aero show spectacle and other interesting programmes.
Aero show best captures the spectacle that are this year's Kupa nights (photo Damir Pahić)
And a little more aerial acrobatics (photo Damir Pahić). The one who says there is no life in Sisak, has obviously never visited it. And he definitely should.
Out of other landmarks, whose description would require a whole new text, we will only mention the "Re-think" murals, Old Bridge - Military Sisak, Mali Kaptol, City Hall, Sculpture Park, Veliki Kaptol, Old Bridge, the Basilica of St. Quirinus, Sisak historic ring...
We have also visited the wonderful Old Town where we were transported in a relaxed and happy atmosphere of a Neretva river boat from the Boatmen Association of Sisak (Udruga lađara Sisak). By a pure chance we also witnessed the Sisak wedding scene that conjured up the spirit of this city - a city that seems to be pretty easy to love.
We ended our trip with cycling through Sisak, which is literally covered with cobwebs of bicycle paths through which we were guided. Sisak and surroundings are mecca for cyclists and active holidays, and we experienced that personally while driving through the entire city. It is difficult to single out whether it is better to ride in Neretva river boat or to cycle through Sisak, so we recommend you to try both.
We left full of impressions of the city that is in reach from Zagreb with just an hour drive. With its necklace of countryside households, with its unique nature park and the enchanting beauty of natural and architectural heritage, we are determined to pay another visit. And to make it as soon as possible. Because this destination definitely has a lot to show, throughout the seasons.

The legend of Miljenko i Dobrila!
August, 7 - 11.
The story of Miljenko and Dobrila is settled in the second half of the 17th century in Kaštel Lukšić where two noble families the Vitturis and Rušinićs lived in their romantic castles. Little Miljenko (Rušinić) and Dobrila (Vitturi) were friends and eventually fell in love.
In the meantime, their parents had a terrible fued and decided not to allow their future companionship or marriage. Miljenko and Dobrila eloped and after a sequence of entanglements that only love can produce, their parents gave consent to their marriage in Kaštel Lukšić.
The lovers from Kaštela accepted their parents' will. However, Dobrila's father, count Radoslav couldn't actually accept the fact that Miljenko had won and that he was going to take Dobrila as his wife to their new home – a castle of the noble family Rušinić.
Engulfed by uncontrollable hatred and vengeance, a night after the wedding of two young lovers in summer of 1690, count Radoslav killed his son-in-law with a firelock in front of his castle in Kaštel Lukšić.
A few months after the grievous event, out of tremendous sadness, Dobrila lost her mind, got sick and died. Her last wish was to be burried next to Miljenko at Rušinac, in St. John's chapel from the 16th century.
Their tombstone can still be seen in this church, with the inscription: "Lovers, rest in peace". In Kaštel Lukšić, besides their grave, there still stand the authentic castles of Dobrila (the Vitturi castle, 15th – 16th century) and Miljenko (the Rušinić castle, 15th century) as well as the old church dating from 1530 where the lovers got married.
This legend inspired the authors of a novel, a drama and even an opera.
